I do not dislike him by any means, I've enjoyed some of his sets - even a few of his productions.... I just really didn't 'get' Emissions. Should this thread only be for praise and people who agree with you on Dubfire's level of hotness? lol

Posted by Skipper on Nov-19-2007 18:08:

<--- still stunned that dubfire did the first official remix of spastik since it was released in 1994

I like it. It's not the greatest, but I like more than most of other Dubfire's productions. I like the big drop with the spray sound.

That said, Space Bird is definitely a better production lol. Techy muthafuckin' goodness!

I like Emissions...I heard it at Stereo, and man, on that soundsystem it's pretty creepy!

Posted by Skipper on Nov-19-2007 23:39:

I don't know why I feel so much disgust for the remix of spastik. At this point, any remix is just going to put a minimal, blippy twist on what is, IMO, a timeless techno track that just is best left alone.

It's like "spastik for dummies" - for when the full effect of the track is too much, play this muted down version.

It's not great at all.

Track is meant to be left alone.

Posted by junkie_vince on Nov-20-2007 00:23:

Its not really a remix but more of an edit/rework like the title says. All he really did was layer his own beats over it. I bet Ali did it for himself & Hawtin figured itll sell so lets put it out. Its funny because I played the original a few months ago & ppl looked at me like I was from another planet LOL

No track is meant to be left alone you presumptuous f*cks. Let people do what they want to do....who knows, maybe one day you might be pleasantly surprised. lol

I'm pleasantly surprised by a lot of remixes and often enjoy them more than the original.
But unless you're going to do something creative with the track that perhaps even challenges the original, I think it's laughable...particularly when the track is spastik.

If you are playing the original of spastik and people look at you like you're from another planet, it's because they don't know a fucking thing about techno.

I respect your take on this, but who is to judge what is a creative attempt or not, or if it challenges the original? Every attempt to remix a track is creative act isn't it? "Challenging the original" may mean different things to different people. For example, someone may want to just sample part of the original and move it across genres. Others may want to simply improve it in ways that appeals to an audience that already loves the original. So while you may laugh or ridicule the attempt, others may squeal with delight.

Such is the new rip-mix-and-burn way of life we live in.

I'm surprised no one has commented on how all Dubfire did was more or less put some of the loops from his remix of Float Away on top of the original. It's not like he even did anything new for this....took something he already did, and as Vince said....reworked it. I think it works. The loops that he used from Float Away sound retarded on a club system. In general, the majority of the shit Dubfire does sounds retarded on club systems. He has an incredible ear for sounds that sound way better on club systems than everyday studio/car/home systems etc. More often that not I don't particularly enjoy his releases all that much until I hear them in a club.

...which is why I cant stand it!
Spastik isn't just some relatively new, run of the mill loopy techno track, it's one of the top 5 tracks that characterizes the entire genre and history of techno. I think that is one thing most techno heads can agree on - and we don't often agree on much No one has remixed it since it was released in 1994. If you're going to be the first one, maybe put a bit more effort into it.

I get my back up about this track because it changed a lot of my views on electronic music and is probably my favorite record of all time. I always thought that no one had remixed it because they couldn't do a decent enough job of creating something that did enough justice to the original track while creating something new with it at the same time. So to hear this as the first released remix of it in 13 years is disappointing.

I can totally agree with you on this....but I can also say that I enjoy the tune regardless of the unoriginality of it. Mind you, I'm not exactly a techno connoisseur like you are....so I can see where you're coming from.
