i've let a few people in my life who all became pretty close friends of mine for a while, kept telling myself they were decent people even though they gave off a pretty sketchy vibe overall. regardless of whether they ever would have fucked me over or stolen from me or anything like that, there's no reason to keep a "friend" in your life if you think they're a shady person. you might be the last person they'd steal from or lie to, but when it comes down to it... if they're acting sketchy towards other people there's a good chance they might fuck you over eventually.
two of my best friends in high school had one of our other friends co-sign on a credit card and then maxed it out and never paid it... totally fucked my friend's credit and his financial standing. he already had it pretty rough and then for 2 of his closest friends to go and do something like that was just beyond fucked up. we haven't spoken to them since then... and i have no desire to, even though these are kids that i spent every single day with for 2 years.
but just the fact that you've grown up with this kid and you've known each other for years makes the whole situation a lot harder. it's no fun to have to watch your back around your "friends" but you can't exactly kick him out of your life based on suspicions. i'd still be pretty careful around him though...
oh, and don't buy coke from K-Mart. that shit is STEPPED ON, yo!

At this point I've dropped 80% of my friends from 5 years ago. Now my only good and best friend is my gf, and that's shitty cause it's always good to have that friend you can talk to and just chilax. Everyone it's on their own and what-not now. Slylee that really sucks, I've gone through similar situations and it's a really shitty feeling. Sad and mad at the same time sort of thing.
