how necessary is car in NYC?
I always thought that NYC was more like tokyo,
where it's better just to use the subways/trains.

My car got totalled shortly after I moved here and I never bothered getting another car. If you live in the city it's nothing but a pain in the ass....tickets, street cleaning, and people just don't respect other peoples property in NYC. I would highly recommend not bringing your car if you plan on living in the city.....but if you live any place else it's a nice thing to have as long as there is adequate parking in your neighborhood (good luck with that though.)

I live in Queens and work in Long Island but there is ample parking at home and work so it's easier for me to drive since the trip is fairly long and I would have to tansfer from the Long Island railroad. If I worked in Manhattan I would def be taking the train.
