So we smell the steakhouse, go in, order a steak, leave and go get high again..... Thankfuly we found the hostel again.

Come to think of it, that is one of the times i have ever been the highest.

Well we found the bar you recommended, Mario - but it was a bit more than 7 meters to the left of the hotel (quite a bit, actually).

Nice spot though. Will likely head back.

And yeah - we've been loving the cats.

I'm pretty sure bestiality is illegal in Holland, liberal country or not.

By "cats" you mean "prostitutes", right?

I honestly rememeber it being the door NEXT to the entrance to the hotel, but not as far as the end of the street (where there is a little cafe which is chill to smoke in if you get a window seat next to the river )

Did you try the hogarden gran cru? the le chuffe?

It is awsome that you found it and liked it though, i liked it alot as well, with the outside seating, and the inside being so nice... cant go wrong

7 meters is quite different than 7 mariometers

What a vacation.

I don't really have the energy or desire to get all too into the details right now, but here's a copy of the notes I randomly took throughout the trip of things I wanted to be sure to remember.

quote:

- "Stone cold stober"

- Overheard from a student supposedly "doing research" for Students for Sensible Drug Policy: "I'm a really irresponsible pot smoker."

- Medieval Madness: Greatest pinball machine of all time.

- Shops of the trip (Various Reasons): Kadinsky, Homegrown Fantasy, Any Day, the Dolphins, Hunters Bar, Betty Boop

Music:
quote:

- DJ Jean "The Launch", J5, Axwell "Feel the Vibe", "Put Your Hands up for Detroit", Daft Punk, Andy Caldwell, chill drum & bass, Andy Caldwell, Haji & Emanuel, Hits from the Bong, G&D "Let it Go" (LOL), and "lots of shit that sounds like it's probably Deadmau5."

- I finally get Ricardo Villalobos. Boy, do I ever. Fuck. Epic.

- Amsterdam = Comfy Disco.

- The most excited Indian to ever eat a hot dog.

- Schipol's announcer voice sounds a lot like the robot from Portal - will also gladly offload your luggage.

- Canceled flight = Bonus Day. Win.

- Being Rick Rolled upon your arrival back to O'Hare is an incredibly pleasant welcome home. He will never run around and desert you.

Loads of pics, and a much more coherent version of my thoughts on the trip will probably come tomorrow.

Alright, so heres a bit more on the above, and some other stuff about the trip, but first....

How we got banned from St. Christophers Inns the world over!

The first hostel we stayed at was OK they had a great bar, but it was very, very rowdy and loud all the time, and filled with drunken English and Americans day and night, so we didnt spend all too much time there. The staff were also complete cunts save for two of the bar staff everyone else was a fucking knob.

One night we were chilling out and smoking a joint in the lounge and I tried to purchase some munchies from the vending machine because the kitchen hadnt been open all day. My chips got stuck between the glass and the machine, so naturally Myra and I give it a few shoves and bam, were good to go.

The machine was built like a tank, and we could barely move it at all, much less cause any damage to it (certainly no more than the rest of the crowd was causing in the bar), but two seconds later this fellow from the hotel who was a complete prick the entire trip comes barreling into the lounge raving about how he has Pictures and Videotapes of me trying to vandalize the hotel. After repeating the phrase We have the pictures, we have the videotape about half a dozen times (he was clearly fucking mashed, and had been the whole trip but may well have been the hotel manager for all we know) he finally understood that it wasnt the fact that he had them that I cared about, it was what he planned to do with them. After a lot of empty threats, he just said Im attaching a note to your bill, you are permanently banned from all of our establishments. I said I was quite sorry as he walked off, but it was pretty clear this guy had just been looking for any reason he could find to tee off on a tourist so in hindsight its quite a bit more funny and sad than I had even remembered.

But yes, we are permanently banned from all St. Christophers Inns throughout Europe, lol.

- "Stone cold stober"

Uttered by Myra on the first or second day of the trip. Needless to say, the fact that it was a pure accident in speech and that she clearly wasn't sober was something I found hilarious.

Two kids staying at our hostel introduced themselves to me when they arrived as "representing" SSDP to do some research in the city. They weren't necessarily complete douchebags, but they were also not particularly awesome either.

Two mornings later they're both having some beers with a few of the other guests and basically talking about all the various substances they'd gotten into - which I paid no mind to until I heard the above.

I was pretty high, so maybe it's not that funny, but meh - I thought it was.

Find it, play it, more pics to come. Enough said.

- Shops of the trip (Various Reasons): Kadinsky, Homegrown Fantasy, Any Day, the Dolphins, Hunters Bar, Betty Boop

Kadinsky: Probably the shop that we spent the most time chilling out in, its still the same as I remember it very chill place to hang out, and with the weather being as dicey as it was this place became a great place to get out of the weather. Unfortunately, they also had pretty shit weed. Not bad by any means, but not good either.

Homegrown Fantasy: Far and away the winner for herb. I tried a bout 6 things from their menu over the course of the week, and not one of them was even remotely bad. Power plant was my favorite, but I seriously loved them all. Very nice bongs, friendly staff, excellent space cake cant say enough good things.

Any Day: Stella Blue is still the best marijuana in Amsterdam. Hands down.

The Dolphins: One of the most amazing interiors designs for a shop in all of Amsterdam. Rarely too busy for all too long, and the whole place feels like the inside is underwater. We have a great pic coming from here. Their weed was also phenomenal, specifically the shop special White Dolphin. Run by an interesting couple of girls who I think a lot of people feel are rude, but they were awesome to us and we stopped their regularly.

Hunters Bar: This is where I feel in love with Villalobos. Whatever live set they had on was awesome. Very chill place with amazing music and one of the few chill places to get a beer and smoke. Also one of the few places with the Purps on the menu very solid job with it. On our bonus night there was a woman playing records there that was at least 40 and played as well as Howells. Everything from techno to Chicago house, with a smattering of old R&B and funk records. Awesome.

Betty Boop: This place was like an old friend to me. Just as I remembered it, also a very consistent menu (tried at least 6) friendly staff who chatted us up quite a bit, another awesome place to just chill out. Met the manager of the Grasshopper shops there one night and sat bullshitting with him for a few hours, it was awesome though he did say that the weed at the Grasshopper was the best in the city (duh), and in reality it was without a doubt the worst.

Music

We heard an insane amount of good music while we were in Amsterdam, and surprisingly, some of the most fun tunes to hear were utter and complete shit. We both laughed our asses off when we heard Put Your Hands up for Detroit and Let it Go (we heard the latter dropped live, lol), and the amount of Daft Punk we heard was pretty awesome as well.

We also heard a lot of really, really chill drum & bass (played at a reasonable volume) that was excellent chillout music and hearing Andy Caldwell Give a Little while seeing a bald pot dealer jam out was also ace.

Also, so much fucking Deadmau5 (or stuff that sounds exactly like it).

quote:

- I finally get Ricardo Villalobos. Boy, do I ever. Fuck. Epic.

Pretty sure I already covered this but yeah, Villalobos + really chill bar * dutch weed = win.
quote:

- The most excited Indian to ever eat a hot dog.

We should have taken a picture. No words I can come up with could possibly describe how awesome seeing this kid eat a hot dog while staring into a porn shop was.
quote:

- Schipol's announcer voice sounds a lot like the robot from Portal - will also gladly offload your luggage.

The announcements at Schipol sound EXACTLY like the voiceover robot from Portal and boy does it ever get to the point. The number of times I heard John Smith, you are delaying your flight. Please head to terminal X or we will gladly offload your luggage so the flight may depart.
quote:

- Canceled flight = Bonus Day. Win.

Our flight home on Saturday was canceled, and depending who you ask it was either because of weather or technical things. Either way, it was awesome. We got another whole night/day in the city to bum around, and wound up maybe having the best night of the trip because of it. Just seeing the old woman spin records at Hunters was outstanding.
quote:

- Being Rick Rolled upon your arrival back to O'Hare is an incredibly pleasant welcome home. He will never run around and desert you.

The first thing we heard when we got on the shuttle to our car was

Quite the pleasant return.

I'm sure once Myra has some time she'll get the pictures up and I'll have more to say about them, but for now this is pretty much a good view of the highlights of the trip for me.

Yes, yes it was.

Also, I bought a heady, heady piece of glass while we were over there, but it's in the post now and I don't expect to see it for a week or so.

Will definitely be posting pics of that once I get it though - it definitely felt like a sound investment.

Did you get to listen to any hardstyle/jumpstyle?

It's really huge in Holland. Most people have this misconception that Holland is about Trance, and nothing could be further from the truth; it's all about Jumpstyle and Hardstyle.

I'm hoping that if you went to any discos you were exposed to some harder soundz of Showtek, DJ Isaac, Technoboy, etc.

Posted by RJT on Mar-24-2008 18:31:

I don't even know that I could identify either of those genres in a lineup. All I know is that the D&B played usually had very, very stripped back production and jazzy basslines. It was effectively the exact opposite of the majority of D&B I hear in the midwest.

Edit: We didn't, however, hear much if any trance - which makes sense to me because I don't particularly remember hearing much of it when I was there before outside of trendy nightspots and stores.

Loads of house, hip hop/trip hop, D&B, and classic American pop rock.

Yeah I remember that from when I was over there

"The Enrichment Centre would like to remind you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to offload you and, in fact, will not be detected by security. In the event that the security guard speaks, the Enrichment Centre urges you to disregard his advice"
