Wow, I'm glad you got that in before the lock.

To be fair, the words "Danny Howells" still crop up often enough for me to known immediately who it's by. I'm not accusing the man of Deadmau5's crimes by any means, but I'll wager it's pretty rare to find an EM these days without some self-promotion, especially if it's by someone who hasn't been on before. Deadmau5's set is really the logical conclusion of what the EM is now about.

And I know it's not exactly comparable, but The Future Sound of London did an EM of almost entirely their own material as far back as 1994.

Sure...its logical to do some kind of expose of your own works when you're gonna mix what will possibly be the most heard set you ever play.

I agree, the Howells was the ultimate EM. Such a beautiful and well thought out mix.Still listen to it frequently.

Yay lets all jump on the bandwagon...

Honestly, whats the point of the essential mix? I'm going to say self promotion and increasing popularity of an artist.

This shit reminds me of what went down in the NYTA section not too long ago

*sigh*

I guess isoterra is right

Of course it's about self promotion. ANY gig is about self promotion, or at least tied into it in some way, but that is besides the point.

The point is that there are tasteful ways of going about it and...not so tasteful ways.

Inundating your track selection with your own productions...not tasteful.

It may be an effective way of demonstrating the breadth and scope of your discography, but it says very little as to who you are in terms of DJ'ing...unless it actually is who you are in terms of DJ'ing, in which case you'll have a whole other set of problems to deal with.

yeah. especially if you're a DJ.

and let me tell you, those problems can get pretty serious... i had this one friend once who did something like that, he died.

and there was this other guy who attempted the same thing.... but died 1/2 way through.

Posted by HaeD on Jul-22-2008 06:54:

I can't understand how come every time the mau5 touch something it turn into controversy, especially here... Remind me of Paris Hilton

Once again, a humorous, and thoughtful parody...nothing of an actual response.

At least you're entertaining about it.

Posted by deadmau5 on Jul-22-2008 06:56:

to be 100% honest here, me neither. but for what it's worth, at least sometimes it's kinda entertaining.

wtf do you want him to say? He's a dj and play track to entertain people, and I believe the result is there.

Do you tell people at your job that they suck in what they do for a living, when they are definitely doing a good job?

Posted by Magadansky on Jul-22-2008 07:02:

To be honest, I don't like your music. But what I hate more is the people who are hating just because it's not a "real" dj set. Well, as far as I know, he is not a DJ, he is a producer, so it's normal that he will play his tracks. When the radio gave him the chance to make an EM, they probably knew what would be the result.

What is the problem of all the bashers here to just pass by this set? I didn't listen to it because I knew it would be crap. But do I have to write how bad it is? What's the point? Growing your e-ego? 14 pages of meanless wanking.

I never said he sucked at what he did for a living- I'm not making any remarks concerning his DJ'ing beyond this one essential mix (I've never even heard one of his sets!).

Yes, he's a DJ, and DJ's entertain people, but there are different approaches to this, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with critical remarks concerning these different approaches.

Why does this concept seem to elude people?

By the way, I like how you stated so matter-of-fact that he was DEFINITELY doing a good job, as if it was something that everyone happens to accept.

Anyway, could someone lock this thread already? Yet another 15 page Deadmau5 thread, and it's very depressing (and I'm pretty sure even Deadmau5 would agree).

No, when you listen to a mix as a listener you need to try and understand how the dj approached his mix in order to criticize it. You can't force your approaches of Djing as listener to a dj.

Considering how much entertainment i got from this EM, without even hearing it, he is DEFINITELY doing a good job.

Okay, so how was Deadmau5 approaching this? From the looks of it, to either promote his own productions or to please his audience base, probably consisting largely of people who more likely than not appreciate him mainly due those productions (or both).

Great- not exactly what comes to mind when I think of interesting/quality DJ'ing, but, hey, I suppose everyone has their own understanding as to what makes a great set. If you find this type of set satisfying for whatever reason, good for you. For me, DJ'ing is about the musical identity of the DJ, and I find it hard to believe that this is encapsulated through a set consisting of their own tracks. It's certainly a good idea to include them, but to get a sense as to what a DJ is really all about, their sources of music, for me, would have to extend far beyond their own production catalogue.

Contrast this EM with the set that Clovis posted, and you'll get an idea as to why I don't hold sets like Deadmau5's EM in very high regard.

...and this makes sense to you?

That's the problem exactly - why are producers given slots to do a DJ mix in the first place?

Successful productions have been the gateway to a successful DJ career for some time now, which doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad DJ's, as most of these people were likely to have been spinning well before that one hit track gave them their big break.

It seems to be getting out of hand in recent years, though, such that being a successful DJ is having a lot less to do with actually being a good one.

i never really heard any of his stuff, only TAs love/hate relationship with mau5, yet i don't see what the big deal is. he is doing what other successful djs are doing - whoring their own tracks and labels. half of being a successful dj is having business sense. if he wants to loop cats having sex behind a 4/4 beat for his EM, that's ok too.

I'm not sure if any of you guys realise, but deadmau5 always plays his own shit. It's like you're expecting something different? That's what he does, so stop saying "OMG I CANT BELIEVE HE ONLY PLAYED HIS OWN TRACKS WTF". If you don't like it, good, move along and shut the fuck up.
