"Canada: We're good at hockey. That's aboot it."

I read somewhere that most government sports funding is (naturally) going to Vancouver at the moment so obviously Beijing results are suffering. I could be wrong, but it makes sense.

Maybe we won't win a medal? I can see us not winning a Gold quite easily actually, but we'll see.

The kayaker for TOGO isn't even from TOGO....he is french but was too old to make the french team and since his dad was from Togo he gets to represent them....they even said he has been to Togo once in his life.

The ideals of the Olympics is a joke....it has nothing to do with representing your country or the spirit of competition.

we haven't gotten to our sport yet..lol

Rowing! We should hopefully get a few medals from the finals there...hopefully, unless there is a huge upset, like there was in Athens, in the 8 men rowing which we are favoured to win...again!

PS. We came in 4th in the Women's 63kg! SO CLOSE!

When tax payer money goes to these athletes then we as tax payers deserve something for our money....and I am sorry but top 50 isn't a reward for my money.

Top 50 in the world is pretty fucking good. What are you top 50 in?

I came in here to say that I'm so disappointed with this whole anthem lip synching girl. The poor girl with the nice voice got milli vanilli'd because her teeth were crooked. So sad.

I never said it wasn't good...I just don't think its good enough to warrant a trip to the olympics.

lol even though the Chinese used computer graphics and a lip synching girl to sing so that everything would be perfect, some stuff were just out of their control... like a PC blue screening.

BSOD during the flame torch lighting during the opening ceremony lol.

Those chinese chicks were wicked! Awesome synchronization the last dive.

The Australians pulled it off nicely as well. COME ON Canada! The one chick wasn't even vertical at the end of one dive.

This is quite the incredible story...the next time you feel you can't reach your goals remember this guy.

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- He's certainly not the star of the team or even a medal favorite, but Eric Shanteau has earned as much respect as any of the U.S. swimmers at the Olympic Games.
hanteau, 24, of Lilburn, Georgia, was diagnosed with testicular cancer June 19, a week before he left for the U.S. swim trials. But he put off the decision to have surgery until after the Summer Games, his first and last Olympics.

"I can't believe what he is going through," said teammate Dara Torres, "but he still has that drive to be here and to do his best. It is an amazing thing to watch."

It will be even more amazing if Shanteau can medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, which begins with preliminaries Tuesday night (Tuesday morning in the United States). He has the ninth fastest time in the world this year, but he's confident he can surprise people. After all, swimming is the easy part.

Cancer is on his mind constantly, he said. He worries about himself and his father, Rick, who has lung cancer. It reminds him that while reaching the Olympics was his dream, there are other things he should treasure.

Shanteau, an Auburn University graduate, admits that he has some down times because of the disease, but constantly reminds himself: "I have cancer; cancer doesn't have me."
And there is the support of his 40 teammates. He broke the news to them at a training camp. They had suspected something was wrong after Shanteau barely celebrated making the team. Aaron Peirsol, who is a club teammate of Shanteau's, wondered why his friend had been keeping to himself and had been showing up late for practice a lot.

Since the announcement, Shanteau has received e-mails, cards and letters from all over the world, but he points to his fellow swimmers as a huge support group.

"I'm very thankful they've taken me under all their wings," he said Wednesday at a news conference before the swimming competition began. "They are all behind me, willing to support me in the fight I am going through." iReport.com: Show your Olympic spirit

He also has the support of his girlfriend, Jeri Moss, who played the key role in discovering the cancer. She was the one who prodded him to go to the doctor one weekend. It was one of those kick in the butt moments that may have prevented a more serious issue.

Testicular cancer is an extremely treatable disease, especially when caught early. More than 95 percent of cases are cured, according to the National Cancer Institute's Web site.

In Shanteau's case, it was discovered extremely early and doctors determined it was slow-moving. He decided to live "week to week" in hopes that the cancer wouldn't quickly spread or grow.

Shanteau's decision to wait is common for people who have constant doctors' care.

"It is not unusual for someone to delay getting treatment for several weeks or several months," Dr. Otis Brawley of the American Cancer Society told CNN in July. "I'm not advocating that everybody wait a period of three or four weeks. If they do it under medical supervision, it can be very safe."

Asked about how he kept his focus after deciding to compete with cancer, Shanteau said it wasn't difficult.

"A lot of times when you get to an event like the Olympic Games, you can put too much pressure on yourself," he said. "I've kind of got an out with cancer."

It is unlikely that when Shanteau boards a plane to head back to the United States that he will have a medal to take with him. He disagrees. He said he believes he will finish in the top three "if I show up and swim the race I am capable of."

And then the man with cancer will turn supporter, cheering on the teammates who look to him for inspiration. iReport.com: Show your Olympic spirit

"To know I will be cured and I will beat this is inspiring," he said. "It's not going to get in the way of my life."

very silly
the over-glorification of american athletes. Well we won't get into that

anyways heres a good story from last night. During the women's team gymnastics competition, the American women lost out to fantastic Chinese team in a great contest. The Chinese were truly brilliant and really put on a show for their home crowd. What I really loved seeing is the comaraderie shown between the American girls at the end of the contest. One of them was obviously upset after falling in one of the rotations (the floor i think) and one of her younger team-mates (the talented Shawn Johnson) consoled her. I thought it was a touching moment captured on television as the older girl smiled and teared up.

These athletes put their life into preparing for the olympics and for it all to go out the window in one 2 minute routine is sad. Thats how it works though and moments like that are especially why I love the world of sports.

The Chinese came up to the Americans after the gold was secure and took a moment to hug and congratulate the 2nd place Americans. Very nice

its good to see some of these feel good stories surrounding the olympics....just wish there was a feel good story for our Canadian Athletes.

Its great to see that we have set 17 new Canadian Records in the pool but it also shows just how far behind the rest of the world we are.

Maybe the Canadian Media over hypes the possible success of the athletes. So far I have heard of at least 4-5 events where CBC is saying we have a good shot at a medal and the athletes fail...our world champion 100m freestyler couldn't even make the finals.

Canada is the only host nation in history to host an Olympic games and not win a gold medal that same year ... not just once, but TWICE ..

Montreal 1976 (summer)
Calgary 1988 (winter)

at least we hold one record not likely to ever be broken

to me its more then just disappointing...it shows how bad the canadian athletics program is....I don't expect that we should be up there in the medals with China, Russia, USA, etc. but we should be competitive...and right now it doesn't appear we are competitive in most events that we have athletes in.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Aug-13-2008 15:03:

Umm please take Russia out of that list. We've gone down the shitter also.

actually that girl fell on her last TWO routines....floor AND beam, which clearly lost the 1st place and shook her team up to the core. Poor girl has to think about that the rest of her life, while the other girls will have to ponder how they stick everything and still lost it because of one chick. I almost feel bad for her but she messed up on something so silly.

Love the interactions between the teams though. The chinese KNEW that the one girl lost it for the americans, and clearly understood her pain. The coach went directly to the american girl and gave her a hug after it was over.
