Kapono will never be a starter in the NBA because he is not big enough, not fast enough, nor athletic enough to defend any opposing starter.

As a second string guy he is being overpaid.

There are probably lots of guys out there that can defend with slightly lower shooting percentages.

It is time for him to go. Think about it. Honestly.

And he has really been inconsistent off the bench. One game he puts in jumpers like it's a fire sale, next game, he's throwing igloos

So what? The first 2 he might've had some bad injuries but 69 out of 82 is not bad and last year was a write-off for Indiana. There's more to it than just him being fragile in those stats Are you gonna tell me people should give up on Elton Brand or Amare Staudemire because of a season or 2 of missed time?

Like I said before: we'll see how many games he plays this year for us.

Look at what Kapono did in Miami under Pat Riley...look at what he did in the playoffs last year. The guy can play when in the right system. In theory you would think that this would be the right system with so much attention being drawn to Bosh and O'Neal down low that the wings would be left with tons of opportunities....but I guess not (see the points Andy posted above as to why this is the case). Look at Popovich teams, look at Jackson teams, look at Pat Riley teams....these coaches get production out of everybody. This is what good coaches do....and what makes teams good. It's what takes them from middle of the pack to contenders. Look at where we stand with the Raptors.

THANK YOU!

Anyone who plays under Riley has to be able to defend. Defense is nothing more than moving your feet aggressively enough to keep you between the man and the bucket. It's hard, thankless work, and there's no stat that'll tell you how many times a player kept his man in front and forced him into a contested shot, or to give up the ball, but it literally is half the game.

There are very few players in the league worth $21 million per year, and NONE that average less than 30 minutes a game.

Jermaine O'Neil's contract is an anchor and a joke.

Watching him gimp around on those wobbly knees and ankles does not give me any confidence whatsoever.

Everything about him is painful to watch.

Salary 2009: $21,372,000 !!!!!!!!!

yeah, but it comes off the books after that...precisely when the Raps need to resign Bosh and lure in another free agent (hopefully). Even next year, it makes JO valuable as trade bait to another team looking to shed salary.

I don't think acquiring him was ever primarily about helping the Raps right now. Whatever he gives that year (and maybe next) is a bonus. I wouldn't be surprised if he was traded THIS year.

SHAWN MARION, PLEASE!

Miami is shopping him. One rumour was Parker + one of Moon/Graham for him, but the salaries don't work, so I don't know where that came from. But if the Raps move Jermaine, a larger deal would work. Miami has plenty of guards (apparently shopping Marcus Banks too) and they need a legit C to play with Haslem until Anthony matures.

Calderon-Kapono-Marion-Bosh-Bargnani

Marion is the defender and rebounder the Raps *clearly* need right now (he provides blocks too) and he's a great fit, IMHO.

Marion still has plenty of game...I think he's just suffering in the Miami's DWade system as he doesn't have a true PG playing with him, as he did in Phoenix with Nash. He doesn't really create his own scoring chances, but that would change with Jose and he wouldn't be expected to be a primary scoring option anyway.

Hire Flip Saunders and bring in Marion!

meh. Don't forget he played with Shaq when Shaq was Shaq and with Wade who can basically score at will.

His success was not entirely Riley's doing.

Look how godawful bad Riley's Heat were last year. Nice system. lol

lol oh whatever! He makes things happen; unlike every other person on this team not named Chris Bosh.

And his contract, while a burden, will give us lots of cap space in the future. Not that it matters though, as Chris Bosh is probably getting the fuck out of here the instant he can.

Agree and disagree. Riley's system wasn't the problem last year; injuries and scrubs were. Outside of that though, yea when you're on a team with Shaq and Dwade then you'll get a lot of looks, even if you only played a minuscule part in the championship run.

RAPTORS FIRE COACH MITCHELL, TRIANO TAKES OVER IN INTERIM

Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Wednesday that Sam Mitchell has been relieved of his duties as the team's head coach.

Assistant coach Jay Triano will assume the position of interim head coach. The remainder of the coaching staff will continue in the organization.

"This is a difficult but necessary step the franchise must take," said Colangelo. "We appreciate all that Sam has done for the organization, applaud him for his successes and wish him nothing but the best with his future in basketball."

Mitchell was named the sixth head coach in Raptors history June 29, 2004. He posted a 156-189 (.452) record in his four-plus seasons at the helm of the Raptors. He garnered the Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season. He also captured The Sporting News 2007 NBA Coach of the Year honours in a vote among his head coaching peers. In January 2007, Mitchell became only the second coach in Raptors history to earn Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honours.

Jay Triano is in his seventh season as a member of the Raptors' coaching staff. He became the first Canadian born and Canadian trained coach in the NBA when he served as an assistant coach to Lenny Wilkens during the 2002-03 season.

A native of Niagara Falls, Triano was the head coach of the Canadian men's national team from 1998-2004 posting a 52-42 (.553) record. He led Canada to a semifinal berth in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico and to a 5-2 record, second best to the United States, in the 2000 Olympics. He has also served as an assistant coach of the USAB Select Team (2007 and 2008), the head coach of the NIKE Skills Academy in Vancouver (2006) and Toronto (2007), and for the past six years as a coach at the prestigious EURO CAMP in Treviso, Italy.

Triano served as interim head coach for one game last season when Mitchell was away for a personal family matter. The Raptors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 105-82, on February 10 at Air Canada Centre.

Triano's first game as interim head coach will be Friday when the Raptors visit the Utah Jazz. Game time is 10:30 ET. The game will be broadcast live TSN and TSN HD

Well...guess this discussion is over. lol

that was fast...but i'm glad it happened.

Posted by MarkT on Dec-03-2008 22:25:

someone here at work just mentioned it...not surprised. I liked Mitchell, but agree it was time for a change.

I renew my call for Flip Saunders to be approached (though I'm not sure how that works if Detroit is still paying him for this year?)

I dunno man. Flip isn't exactly a proven coach. There's a reason why the Pistons fired him. And the T Wolves.

God damn I wish we could get someone like Sloan or something.

Posted by slingshot on Dec-03-2008 22:34:

Colangelo must be reading TA, lol. Or I guess at least he shared our frustration....I'm surprised at how fast this happened as well. Wow.

He isn't tho man...his team gave up on him in Minny...he never really took them anywhere there...and the Pistons gave up on him last year. He just comes across as a guy who doesn't get much respect from his players.

Huh?

Career win/losses: 587 wins, 396 losses (.597 pct)

Ok ok; seriously. Flip would be a huge improvement over Mitchell but the guy was fired from the T Wolves and was the main target for criticism over the last 3 years with the Pistons. I mean honestly, a monkey could've coached that Pistons team to the Eastern Conference Finals for 3 straight years.

Posted by I_Am_Vince on Dec-03-2008 22:43:

Argh we had a chance at D'Antoni a few months ago! Look how well the Knicks are doing this year. But atleast we have a Canadian head coach now. Lets see how well he does before they find a replacement.

How many coaches don't get criticized at some point during their coaching careers?!?!?!?! Boy, you guys are irritating today. I think I need a drink. lol

Regular season w/l are fine and dandy in all but he never really got the most out of his players when it really mattered. Like Peter said, he'd be a definite improvement....but I don't think he's in that upper echelon of coaches. He has a crafty mind in terms of what he does with his teams but again, I've never felt as if he got the best out of his players when it mattered the most.

Colangelo never wanted Sam. I bet this decision was easy for him.

Maybe I should use a different word: he was BLAMED for the Pistons' lack of success after Larry Brown.

Another way of putting it: The Pistons never reached the Finals again because their head coach was outcoached by the opposition.

Regular season wins/losses are irrelevant. The guy never made it into the finals and had WAY better teams at his disposal than the Raptors. Stop acting like he's some sort of coaching god because right now he's maybe only a slightly better option than other available coaches. Having said that: he IS a defense-first coach so I'd probably want him moreso than anyone else coaching our team.

Big whoop D'Antoni is doomed for failure.

What?!?!?! Crazytown. I never said such a thing. I merely responded to your ridiculous comment that "Flip isn't exactly a proven coach."

He may not be Phil Jackson, but he is definitely proven.

I have no idea who they should hire. I honestly don't think it will make a difference with this sorry lot.
