i was worried beforehand i might be overestimating how good it would be.. but turned out to be an amazing night
squillace was one hell of an opener, rarely do you see guv rocking that hard to techno just a couple minutes after midnight. it was nice how fanciulli brought down the pace a little bit, then dubfire came in full strength with the dahkness... and the b2b2b was just insanity and fun to watch. i wish the last 30 mins were a little harder, but in the end i still felt overwhelmed by techy goodness... only complaint sound wise was it seemed the mids were kind of muffled.
the crowd was the best ive seen at guv for some time, not much pushing, everyone was friendly and having a great time. nice running into and meeting new TAs (even if one of you introduced yourself twice within a couple minutes HAHA :P)
not sure if any guv parties will outdo this one in 2009... it set the bar pretty high

First Davide experience and I enjoyed what he brought to the table. He did lose me for a bit in the middle, but grabbed me back in again. As mentioned previously having the room erupt so early in the night was a definitly very impressive.
Nic blew my mind. Simply amazing tunes and many a smooth transition. Slowed it down a bit, but with that slow down came that deep deep chugging that I love the most. Great job at building up for Dubfire, considering he was to be the closing DJ. I have not previously really been a big fan of Ali, but I was really impressed with his performance on Sunday.
The b2b2b turned my night upside down. It was evident the three loved being up there together, and were there to fill the room with bangin beats, enjoying every minute of it. The crowd was eating it up.
Agreeing with Mark, the bar for 2009 parties has been set very high. My ass shaked a lot and my ears were very pleased.

WOW.
First of all, lots of the comments in this thread are making me literally laugh out loud. Anyone who thinks that Sunday night was "boring" or "too minimal" should have stayed home and gone to Above & Beyond the night before.
As for the comments about people not dancing; that shouldn't really be a premise for the argument that the headliners played poorly. There is rarely a time that I go to Guv and get wowed by the crowd reaction.
As I posted a few days ago, I haven't really been writing reviews recently because there hasn't been any parties that have inspired me to do so. Well, Family Day @ Guvernment certainly did.
I had a good feeling about this party in the pit of my stomach in the weeks leading up to it, and boy were my instincts ever spot on. I arrived at The Guv at 11:30 and was surprised to see that the timeslots were:
Squillace 11:30-1:00
Dubfire 1:00-4:00
Nic Faniculli 4:00-close
It turned out however that these set times were merely a loose guideline. What really happened is they pretty much went back-to-back-to-back all night, with each DJ playing a bit longer within their respective timeslots.
Squillace started after Mark Oliver around 11:30-1:00. To be honest, I didn't really enjoy his set that much. It was too dark and thumping for that time of the night. I found it very out of place for the timeslot. I thought that it would have been better if he played at a later time slot. Little did I know...
Next up, Nic Fanciulli came on, even though it was supposed to be Dubfire. Fanciulli picked up the pace a bit with a bit more funk and chug. Around this time, the Tune Horn blasted, the crowd went crazy, and the party kicked into high gear. Squillace then appeared, almost as if the horn was his cue to come back on and pick up the pace of the party even more. And like the Tune Horn usually predicts, this is when things really started getting crazy. They played a 2-3 tracks each, and then would switch. They went on like this, building up the party until around 3 or 3:30 (can't remember exactly) when Dubfire came on. By this point, this party had already surpassed my expectations.
Dubfire came on and played exactly like I expected to. Good tunes here and there, but generally he just overkilled it with the big builds. He played a few hard, bassy tracks that were reminiscent of the 2004/2005 Deep Dish era. I quite enjoyed hearing those.
Although Dubfire kind of brought the party down from 3:30-5:00, I'm starting to think this was the point. He was building the anticipation for the onslaught that would be served starting 5am. It's too bad that most people got fed up and left. That was quite a big mistake.
Around 5am, I decided to move up to the front for the last few hours since the back of the club was getting kind of empty. Almost as soon as I got there, I saw Fanciulli and Squillace step up to join Dubfire. As soon as I saw this, a huge smile appeared on my face as I knew I was about to witness magic.
The b2b2b set from these 3 was just one of those rare party experiences. They played a few tracks to warm up, and then just started letting it rip in true, classic �5am Guv Main Room Deep Dish� style. Squillace would come on and play a hard, bassy, heavy track. Fanciulli would then come on and just destroy the room with a massive, chuggy, clicky tech house stormer. Then Dubfire would play a big build, but generally brought things down a bit. However, past 6:30, Dubfire played a few of the druggiest fucking tracks I think I've ever heard. In one of the last tracks he played, he kept EQing it so it sounded like a heart pumping, except the pumps of the heart were these warped bassy sounds. It's really hard to describe as I've never heard a track like that in my life, and was honestly astonished that I sounds like that existed in dance music.
The three of them continued on with this track-by-track volley, creating a deranged, heinous, druggy crescendo, to the point where I was literally walking around with my head in my hands, shaking my head in disbelief at what I was hearing. I must have walked up to at least 10 people, some of whom I knew, some of whom I didn't, asking, stupified, �How is this so good?!� It was just one of those rare experiences.
Near the end of the night, Fanciulli belted out a huge melody: one of the only melodies of the night. A little bit later, one of the DJs played Strings of Life. Both of these rare melodies were really effective, and made the few people who remained smile, jump up and down and scream at the tops of their lungs. These 2 tracks were like a breaks in the treacherous storm clouds that these 3 had conjured up.
My only complaint is that the party didn't go longer. I was a bit surprised that they ended it at 7:15am. It was kind of an abrupt end too. They didn't really bring it down at all before they finished. Another hour would have been nice, but I couldn't really complain after what I had just experienced.
Before Sunday night, I had seen Fanciulli 4-5 times and had never enjoyed him. It was ironic that I was having a conversation with someone about that last week. I conceded that although I had never liked him, I was sure he was capable of destroying a club. He certainly proved me right on Sunday night. Fanciulli was by far the best DJ on Sunday night.
Between a large group of old friends that rarely get together anymore, stellar music, and rare party magic, I am still reeling from this party.
This party gets a near perfect 10 from me, and is in the top 3 Guv parties I've been to since I started going in 2002. It just really doesn't get much better than that.
Anyone who left before 5am really, really missed out on rare Guvernment magic and should be kicking themselves for it.

I was glad that the sound was turned down a bit in the Guv main room than the level it is usually at. Normally it's way too bass heavy and all you can hear is distorted bass.
That being said, it often seemed like it wasn't loud enough. The Guv really, really needs to upgrade their sound system in a significant way. It's almost sad how bad it is compared to other clubs of similar class worldwide.
