Firstly, most "common knowledge" is wrong. Secondly, general rules often don't apply to specific examples. Thirdly, that's conjecture and assumption.

Although are we really classing W+L as "niche within a niche"? They have a thread every day on TA, they have a podcast entry on a highly popular review site and their upcoming gig is flyered all over my city.

It's not an argument.

They're charging for these tracks because they want to make money without paying Stevie Wonder what he's owed. Very simple.

So you think that ALL samples should be cleared at all costs or else the music should just be free?

We could go all over the place with that one.

I understand the intention here and I understand the law, what I'm trying to point out is that in reality, things happen differently, and they have been for a while. It would be great if everything could be cleared fairly and easily but that just isn't the case, and I personally would rather have some music that borrows illegally make it out than not. I wouldn't release edits of stevie wonder or michael jackson like that myself, but there is more to the situation than just the law.

Yours is also "conjecture and assumption"

That's just good promoting, really. And TA is a weird place. I frequent other forums, mostly as a lurker and believe me when I say that W+L is not big there.

Which "highly popular review site"?

If you want to make money out of a sample, then yes. Otherwise these artists couldn't complain about piracy, because they used something without paying the original creator themselves. It's the same principle, just a different application.

I appreciate that lots of great music uses samples, but that music could still exist, it just wouldn't make the artist any money.

@woscar: There's no conjecture in saying they want to make money out of a track by releasing it when they could give it away for free, and there's no conjecture in saying they don't want to pay Stevie Wonder if they've kept quiet about it. Unless you can think of a really good reason why they want to tell him but can't.

I'm just going by what people who actually have experience releasing music have said. I think there was even a thread about it in Production Studio recently. As Clovis said, beatport sales alone are not putting food on the table. (and I think he actually knows some of the artists in question here, which would definitely apply to your "specific example.")

Yes, compared to most mainstream music, they are. Theres no denying they are big in the "underground" of EDM, but they represent a very small fraction of dance music which in itself is a niche.

I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about how you played the "you're only assuming that" card on Seppuku for his comment on how much EDM artists make from their tracks without backing it up with facts. Which was "conjecture and assumption" in itself.

Look at me, taking Wolf + Lamb all serious.

I didn't claim he was assuming anything. I asked for proof behind his statement. There's a big difference between assuming he didn't have proof and asking for some proof.

even if you consider the sampling "ok"...

isn't it a bit weak to bank your entire label on edits of existing music? not only the entire label, but the entire sound that w+l represents. it's all ripped off. maybe that's the point, i don't really know.

when i listen to their sets i just wait for the next track and say "oh look another disco edit"

i'll admit i don't know their catalog front to back, but their live sets are all the same...

Posted by woscar on Dec-11-2009 15:21:

LOL dude, the Wolf + Lamb guys have three different labels with over 60 releases between all of them. Only one of such labels, which is Wolf + Lamb Black, was created with the sole purpose of releasing these edits, and they have released 3 EPs.

And between all of their 60+ releases, ONE of them has been "disco edits".

Who the fuck are you talking about? Soul Clap? Wolf + Lamb the DJs, the label, or someone else?

You sound like you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, whatever that is...

Posted by epdarks on Dec-11-2009 17:29:

you are right, i have never looked at a wolf and lamb catalog

their live sets are all disco edits, so i assumed that's what they released

not really into that sound, so i didn't bother looking into it...

you guys happy?

Posted by epdarks on Dec-11-2009 17:38:

Permanent Vacation, DFA and Running Back playing second fiddle to W+L and Hyperdub is criminal. I don't get RAs hard-on for dubstep

Hyperdub is one of the most forward thinking labels around, but you're right, it shouldn't have been number one. Wolf + Lamb are the clear choice for label of 2009 for me.

I don't get anyone's hard-on for dubstep, actually.

I've been 3 years and counting. Best times of my life by far. I'm hopefully gonna put a day party camp together this year but we'll see, an art/party car might end up being a better investment (ps - looking for more peeps who'd be down to throw in some time and/or money. pm me, heh).

not quite true. Many of the samples that they use come straight from old disco records.

I'm not joining this argument on either side, but just wanted to say that.

i like RA, but they are notorious for being fad whores.

RA is on the disco edit fad too

Well, because they're in such a strong position as the #1 online source for info/reviews of "cutting edge" edm they can almost create fads on their own, or at least help propel something new into "fad" status extremely quickly.
