How often is a Red Card reversed (removed or whatever the term is) in soccer?

It's pretty rare. FIFA did the same thing for Ronaldo at the start of this cup, who got red carded in a qualifier and was supposed to miss three games but only sat out one. Balogun's case is the only one I know where the deferral happened due to the intervention of a head of state, lol.

Stupid fucking Trump. Think what you want about the red card but now that idiot's grimy little fingers have tainted any potential US victory against Belgium.

Anyone else kind of stunned at Mexico's persistence in the "try for a header from a high cross" strategy in the last half hour of the England-Mexico game in spite of the massive English height advantage? Seemed like at some point England stopped even caring about giving Mexico corners because they knew they were bound to win the vertical game.

Crosses are easy to engineer. It's much harder to play through the middle, especially against a team set up to defend. England couldn't do it to Ghana. If a competent team really has no ambition to attack and just sits in a defensive shape, it takes real high quality to break through that. Once we went down to 10 men, Tuchel basically threw on more defenders and invited Mexico to try. We had the lead, we didn't need to attack too much and leave open space in defence. And they - fortunately - didn't have the creativity to get through.

Meanwhile, Spain - Portugal is probably the most high quality match up we've seen so far by quite a distance, but it already looks like it's going to be extremely boring to watch. Lots of tidy possession, neither team willing to go crazy. I think I'll be enjoying a beer in the garden and checking the text updates rather than watch the second half. Knowing my predictive prowess at this tournament so far, the second half will be a 5-5 goal bonanza.

Oh man, that last header from Portugal was heartbreaking. So close to bringing it to a draw and going to extra time.

I realize that match was a boring chess-like tactical battle for any neutral but as a fan it was extremely tense. I really hate playing Portugal as it always seems to be the exact same game.

You got there in the end though, and sent the mahogany idol of CR7 home in a carefully padded shipping crate, to be put back on display in a museum in Saudi Arabia.

It definitely feels like Spain are lacking some of the attacking thrills of Euro 2024 though. Your flying wingers aren't exactly flying in this tournament, although injuries have a lot to do with that.

We're getting pretty thoroughly dominated by Belgium so far, haha. Let's see if we can turn the tide.

Too much sloppy play from the US. Sloppy passes getting intercepted, sloppy defense, and that terrible whiffed clearance from our keeper. Disappointing.

In case there was any doubt, team USA proved tonight that they still can't hang with the big boys. Maybe someday.

Lol. I expected we'd probably lose but I at least wanted to make Belgium really fight for a win, not get so thoroughly taken to school as we did. Oh well, maybe next time.

Once I heard about the Red card being reversed, I was sort of upset. Kinda felt like we used political influence for an edge, which I find unfair. The US loss was less hurtful and shall I say, even deserving?? The loss without the player would have felt more fair. Instead we (potentially) cheated and lost.

I'm now rooting for Norway. That Terminator guy is hard not to love at this point.

Horrible + boring display from Portugal! Spain was the stronger side and even if PT advanced they wouldn't get anywhere playing the way they have been.

Also, Ronaldo should not have been expected to play the full game. As for the rest of the team, even in the final 2 minutes there was no urgency to try and get a shot at the net.

Looking fwd to Euro 2028 with a new coach and to see how they fare without Ronaldo

Aw man! I was rooting for Egypt. What a comeback from Argentina, though. They sure know how to turn it on when it counts.

Checked my phone as I got in from work. Egypt 2-0 up. Thought "Oh well, guess Messi couldn't carry them any longer." Checked again ten minutes later. 2-2. "Better get the TV on and catch extra time." Check one more time to see which channel it's on. 3-2, game over. Now I'm impatiently refreshing while waiting for the highlights to be uploaded.

Is there any correlation between team kit sponsors and teams that win? I swear it was those Nike kits on the US that made them lose. Adidas teams >.

Supplier distribution in World Cups has been... quite balanced. Among semi-finalists this century, Nike supplied 11 kits; Adidas, 10; Puma, 3.

For this year's round of 16, Nike supplied 6 kits, while Adidas and Puma tied with 5 kits each. Among the victors for this round, both Nike and Adidas supplied 3 kits each, and Puma took the remaining one. If Switzerland go through, the distribution for the next round will be 3, 3, and 2

Edit: A Colombia victory will skew it to Adidas 4, Nike 3, and Puma 1. They have a slight edge according to my models and most predictions I've seen. But then, so did Brazil

As far as patterns go, this wasn't that much of a shocker after all. Sure, Brazil was the one odd out (it's the first time we don't reach the quarterfinals this century), but Netherlands versus Morocco wasn't as lopsided as it could have been either, so it was a close-ish call.

Shame about Egypt, they nearly clinched a spot in the next round, heh.

Edit: (Un)fun fact: From 1934 up until 2014, there were no semifinals without Germany, Italy, or Brazil. One of them was always present. Then, after the 7-1, neither Germany nor Brazil ever made it to the semifinals ever again, and Italy didn't even qualify. I've watched Dark enough times to know that this, and Ziko scoring for Egypt, has got to be some sort of Sic Mundus Creatus Est nonsense.

Yeah well. Their kits are Puma.

It's such a shame that Ziko's disallowed goal wasn't allowed to stand for Egypt. That would have been the goal of the tournament for me.

Half time in the England game. What a goal by Bellingham. What a player. Ice in his veins. Aside from five wobbly minutes, we've dominated this.
