Man that guy in your avatar should be illegal!

Yeah seriously, unless you have been given a copy / permission from a record company / producer themselves, then you shouldn't be playing it. I know freshFM are guilty of playing some stuff that has been put onto CDR fomr mp3.

btw Christos i was joking with my comment.

Posted by JayKuE on Jun-11-2003 03:33:

surely mr tom brown has said a thing or two? =p

10. Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes On (Sweep String Mix)

has this had a proper release?
i thought the only available mp3 version was a dud taken from
gnd's essential mix, havin being mixed into and out of.

psygnosis, i'm curious coz i remember u sayin u only have spin cycles. u dun even have cdj's so ur mp3 mp3 mixing these mixes?

hehe.. my bad.. i really should read posts a bit more thoroughly before replying... thought he was talking about the fact that some of those songs havent been released...

Posted by Psygnosis on Jun-12-2003 04:02:

Whoa most of you people should chillout, i got most of these songs sent out to me and some i own on vinyl. Sheez, and JayKue, i use all 3 hardware to mix, CDJ, Turntable and PC to Master and make better. Your right, i don't own CDJ but my friend has them and i use his ones. And i did download a few of them but it's not like i'm selling this mix, its for personal use, and personal useage is not illegal.

And i'm wondering to myself my many of you people are taking this offensive attack on me when clearly many of these tracklists are done on CDJ or even MP3, and theyre not even owned yet..

*looks at Dj_Ballistic's tracklist, i'm sure he owns all them on vinyl, sheez, Teknoscaper why don't u argue with him and hundreds of others around the world...and why don't you take the time to complain to PIONEER for making a CDJ to play music...why the hell do you think they were made for in the begining.

Everyone, especially Teknoscaper should take a chill pill, and when a mix goes for radio i can't always play old stuff, i have to try get NEW stuff, if i was made to do mixes then ill do them all on vinyl but i'm not rich and i dont get paid so it's unlikely that i will be able to really afford them all of vinyl at the moment.

Posted by escee on Jun-12-2003 06:36:

I apologise for the huge quoting thats going on here, i wanted to address psygnosis points individually.

Personal use for playing on the radio in an attempt (i assume) to get noticed and move on to better things? Im not keen on delving into the what defines personal use and what doesnt arguement, but im pretty sure personal use of mp3s you dont own/ripped your self is illegal. Yes that would make us all criminals, but public broadcasting is worse than me listening to it on my computer.

Most people in this thread are probably using the sets they have made personally though and not playing a radio show with them and passing them off as tracks they own.

Because cds are a lot more transportable than vinyl? Because its easier to play new and unreleased songs that are actually sent to you rather than downloaded and burnt. Even downloading and burning the mp3 to cd and playing it is fine in my opinion, if you have been given the authors consent. But i doubt gabriel or dresden called you up and said "please play our new single".

Cd Singles are a lot cheaper than vinyl, perhaps you could buy those instead of vinyl when you wanted to play new stuff? One reason that i like buying vinyl is heading out, hunting through a record store and finding a gem, or a really new good promo. Gives you a sense of achievement, much more than burning a newly released reconstruction and playing it.

Overall, I, and seems others here, think its a tad wrong to play stuff on the radio that you dont actually own, dont you?

Edit: Just out of interest
How many songs have you downloaded for that mix?
How many do you own on vinyl?
and How many were "sent" to you?

Posted by BigT on Jun-12-2003 06:46:

I play some tunes that i dl of the net, but only in my bedroom, then once they are available on vinyl , ill purchase them, i dont think mp3's that have been downloaded should be played out on the radio or in clubs, unless given of course consent is given from the record company, artist etc

"i got most of these songs sent out to me"
I was just wondering if you get them sent out to you by the label(are you on promo mailing lists?), or by the artist, or purchased from online?

cheers

p.s

good lookin list of tunes!

Posted by Slade on Jun-12-2003 09:44:

chillout?

excuse me for pointing out the obvious but I've seen radio stations here in Perth get hammered for playing shit that they simply downloaded and played on radio, mainstream radio stations. They got sued into the thousands.

Now I'm pretty sure Nova, knowing that you were doing the same, would check about letting you play on their station.

you can't get away with saying 'oh I only downloaded & played a couple of tunes', if you had any logical sense about you, you'd realise that public radio broadcasting is a hell of a lot different to playing in your bedroom. You're putting your employer at risk, and yourself at risk.

Posted by Ghostface on Jun-12-2003 11:56:

yeah, I'd like to know if Nova are aware that some of the tracks are downloaded.... If so, whats their opinion?

Posted by waXology on Jun-12-2003 12:40:

lol

Posted by Psygnosis on Jun-12-2003 14:20:

Yeh i guess, i guess i have to get a super credit card to access unreleased stuff , look many people do this, even radio stations do this to get stuff they can't get, Tom Brown even told me. Yes i know its wrong but if i couldg get them all on vinyl then i would so i wouldn't have to go through so much pressure like i'm going through now. And knowing Cameron (the other resident) plays on the CDJ time to time...

AND let me point this clear, The RUSH resident Adam white plays with a CDJ, playing unlreleased stuff from time to time...he isn't a massive DJ but he still plays with the CDJ and without stress..

DROP IT.

Posted by DJ_Ballistic on Jun-13-2003 00:56:

for the record this argument is retarded, however psy, it's not the use of cdj's that's got everyone against ya, so don't argue the point

take it easy cowboy.

what you choose to do is inevitably up to you, but i see ppl here just givin you a word of advise/word of warning. i wasn't going to delve into this debate but i just wanted to point out a few things as your argument is significantly flawed. [1] are you a sheep? because other djs do it, doesnt mean its ethically correct. its a pathetic high school mentality [2] sure, when other djs use cdjs, they use it to for tunes they havent access to "from time to time". not only does your tracklisting looks a tad more than from time to time, [i could be wrong, i'm a tad behind lol] your reason for not being able to access them is money. for other djs, they use cdjs for rarities they're not able to find. not unable to afford. [3] your justification for downloading mp3s because you havent a super size credit card sickens me. its simple. if you cant afford the arsenal, don't play the game. personal use is fine, but you're getting public play. [4] you are broadcasting these mixes on the radio, why so? to get heard. therefore, you are using stolen music to promote your music. does that sound right to you?

anyway, just some points for you to mull over.

p.s. u mentioned some were sent to you. through labels and artists? which ones?

Posted by BigT on Jun-13-2003 02:15:

can you answer me this?

"i got most of these songs sent out to me"

I was just wondering if you get them sent out to you by the label(are you on promo mailing lists?), or by the artist, or purchased from online?

Posted by Psygnosis on Jun-13-2003 02:15:

Well i got most of that stuff on vinyl anywayz, so i dont know why escee even started by saying that i should own them, the Airbase remix i got his permission, i got sent Mike Shiver - Feelings and Religion, but they were sent to me in the promo sleeve and stuff but not through the record company...

Hmm i guess ill stop this downloading less, even though i download nothing at all sometimes and start buying more...

I neever knew it was illegal...i apologise to everyone.

Posted by escee on Jun-13-2003 06:12:

because i doubted that you owned most of them and you were playing them on the radio?

It just comes down to personal gain. If you use mp3's to advance your career, whether instantly or eventually, you're going to be making money from something you've in effect stolen.

Unfortunately this 'discussion' is degenerating into a whole mp3 fight, when as was pointed out, it was only started as a warning.

Bro how many times to i have to tell you that not 100% of the mix was done using MP3 burnt onto CD and mixed from there. I told you i own most of them on vinyl, so believe whatever you want to believe.

Posted by Slade on Jun-16-2003 03:29:

superstar dj: playing 1 tune that you've downloaded and burnt on to cd for radio purposes, is 1 too many.
