The flipside is that the lions don't come near you if you're sleeping with a pachyderm. Hypothesis: Were it not for the existence of a great military power to the south, would we reap such a large 'peace dividend'? Would we not have to spend more on national defence, diverting funds from other social programs? |
Ray Finkle, i replied to ur question but because of the way i worded it based on reality, u misread it..
if there were no sanctions on Iraq and no no-fly zone, everything would be as normal as in the 80s....people have suffered more under the sanctions tahn anything else...thats why there have been protests against the sanctions held in france and other parts of europe a couple of years ago
and do u really know why the Kurds were killed?
because they were anarchists.
now if people u support include Bush who are pro execution and abortion, and basically gets thousands of people killed a year by that, what difference is it to killing a batch of anarchists???
Oh so the proper way of dealing with anarchists is to gas them? I better tell Cretien this before he goes to his next world summit. This could be a new and wonderful way of dealing with those pesky people that dislike governance!
As for the sanctions, SANCTIONS WHICH ARE APPROVED BY THE UN, they do hurt the people, however, without Saddam in power, there would be no more sanctions. Whose fault is it? By the way, here is an article dealing with the UN sactions on Iraq. It's from the CBC so don't worry about its impartiality...

all i meant by that was taht Bush is as "evil"
Yes but you said that Saddam was justified in killing them because they were "anarachists". It's funny, because if you lived in the US, you could be considered an anarchist. Better be thankful that you live in Canada, where our leader must be feeling sore from sitting on the fence for so long
Sorry for not including the link. OMG IT MUST BE A CONSPIRACY CBC DOESN"T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW!!!!!!

Also, I don't think you know anything about Saddam

few nice quotes
| quote: |
| In 1958, the Iraqi monarchy – the same family that continues to rule neighbouring Jordan – was overthrown and Iraq became an Islamic republic. The king and most of his family were slaughtered in the coup. The next year, there was another coup attempt, but it failed. One of the members of the hit squad was a young officer who would later become famous: Saddam Hussein. |
| quote: |
| As the suffering became clear to the UN, the Security Council offered a special arrangement to Iraq, whereby it could sell its oil on the market and would receive, instead of money, food and medicine. Saddam Hussein, however, refused to accept the deal. The sanctions are a potent political weapon for him. As long as the suffering continues, he can play the part of the champion of the Iraqi people. |

Why is it that countries are singled out to disarm their weapons, yet other countries are allowed to expand and build their armies to astronomic proportions? The ENTIRE world needs to disarm, this is so fucking pathetic, the entire human race is pathetic. When will we learn that this won't solve anything in the long run, this is bound to only cause more conflict. This war will only be successful in creating tension between nations, it has already started.......I hope to GOD this ends soon, and that no more conflict results. |
Ray_Finkle...
people like u are oversaturated with ur own thoughts that u refuse to think otherwise even for a minute.
all of u who support the war are judgging based only on articles and things youll have heard and/or seen on the TV.. while us who are against it are actually reading between the lines and going deep into the news we read/hear....
OPEN YOUR MIND

sure why not

Tough to take a stand on this because Sadaam is a tyrnanical dictator whereas George Bush is a trigger happy (or should i say Bomb happy) american president.
Some part of me doesn't want the American's to win because i don't believe they should be there in the first place (who died and made the US the worlds police ???).
I feel for the innoccent people of Iraq who have been forced to become untangled in this terrible event which has once again proved, that economics and world politics takes precedence over the price of human lives...

"I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent."

"The past is prophetic in that it asserts loudly that wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
A point which has not been made on here: Iraq, from a self-defense point of view, is being targeted not solely because of the weapons of mass distruction they DO have, but because of the weapons they aspire to create and/or buy. I think what scares people is the fact that Saddam could in the future acquire a nuclear weapon. I know that in this case, diplomacy could be administered while Saddam was actively surveillanced, but then again, there are other reasons the Bush administration claims. And the fact of the matter is that if Saddam had even 1 chemical weapon (not to mention nuclear) and one cruise missile...there is always a chance a lot of people in Tel-Aviv might be gagging in the streets one day...I don't think the same holds true for a US owned weapon and say, Cairo, or even Baghdad. Some people cannot be entrusted with a weapon of such potential devastation, Saddam is one of them...someone find me a reason why Saddam needs his precious illeagal warheads...please
if he was so conserned with defensive measures, why spend money on mass destruction?? build up anti-missile technology...build impenetrable positions...build better and more tanks.

| Originally posted by oceanlab You have isolated a massive gap in global relations, one that will not be filled for many years. There is no, nor has there ever been a "world's police." I will laugh if you reply telling me to consider the UN or Interpol. All there is, is history. A buildup of two superpowers, ending with the demise of one, and the unknown fate of the other. America takes the term "self-defense" very broadly, but shouldn't it? Look at how broad she is stretched. The demise of the US, if Democracy as a governing body fails in the future, will come from within iteself and not from any immediate outside force, the Pentagon insures that to all Americans. To ensure this safety, there are people who America must disarm...we don't know who will be next (maybe Iran, maybe not), but I assure you, there is a list, and until every name on that list, whether by diplomatic or violent measure, has a line through it, today's emipire will not rest. I agree with rest of what you said...but remember that not all people in Iraq are innocent. |
