I wouldn't wear that suit, either (too shiny and the blue isn't dark enough).

But if I had to, it'd definitely be with black shoes, a black belt and a sold white collared shirt (or maybe a very light blue).

With that shade of blue I would definately say brown is preferable to black... the suit is loud, black shoes won't mute it but brown at least brings an earthtone in and some added style. I would suggest; however, that the tone of brown is wrong... too much saturation, should be a lighter brown for that suit; maybe even camel. Given the shade of fabric that is a business suit and will never be a proper suit for any formal situation (no matter how you accessorise it) so brown is appropriate, even preferable. IF you have the moxy to pull that gawdy a suit off then you should go all the way with it.

My thinking... you don't want to compete with yourself. Since the suit kind of screams at people you want to go more conservative with your shirt and tie. I would suggest a plain white dress shirt is the way to go (by plain I mean exactly that... no tone on tone, no flash, no style elements of any type, just a basic conservative white dress shirt that fits well... I throw in the last part because whether it's the pose or the shirt I'm not sure but the way the second from top button is pulling in the picture looks terrible). I always say tie with a suit... this whole CSI Miami suit and no tie shit needs to end already (suits should have ties, don't half-ass a suit, that's what sports jackets are for). The type of knot you normally use will determine what type of collar you get on the shirt... I rock a double windsor so I can pull off a wide spread to standard collar, if you pussy out with a half windsor or 4 in hand then you want a narrower collar spread.

As far as the tie itself goes you have a lot of room to play pattern wise given the suit appears plain and the recommended shirt is plain so feel free to go with a conservative stripe, conservative paisly, or conservative plaid. I would avoid solid colours because the suit is solid; however, you want something that will not draw attention (the suit is doing that enough as it is) so try to keep it a conservative colour with very little contrast in it (grey and blue, blue and black, blue on blue, etc).

As I said earlier; rock the brown shoes and belt but go with a lighter brown... camel if you carry yourself with enough confidence that people tend to think "that dude has style" vs "wtf was he thinking" whenever you try something different (note; just making the bold move of going with camel will likely inspire folks to think style over idiot so give it fire and be confident in it). Additionally, since the suit is not formal you can get away with less formal shoes, oxfords are not required... I would say wingtips are as dressy as you should go with that, probably best to go with a loafer or desert boots if boots are your thing.

I would probably throw a white pocket square in there too... just something to break up the big field of bold blue.

I'm with Eric, I wouldn't normally wear something so bold; however, that is because I work in a conservative industry. If you are going to be bold (which you clearly are) then you need to do it right, so own that shit.

All depends on the industry... you and I are in very conservative industries; however, if he's in a more dynamic field like entertainment, Technology, or in some types of sales it is a good choice. With the colour it can never be a formal suit so it should never be worn to a wedding, funeral, dinner, etc.

I work as a business intelligence consultant, around me almost nobody wears ties, except for men above 50. If I'm on a project at a bank or some other very formal environment, I'll wear ties, but on any other occasion, I don't, since most people I work with just wear jeans or similar casual suits. I'll dress to the occasion, i.e. meeting with some upper management person or 'workplace' people.

However, this is my most casual suit. I have navy, plain black, light gray and brown suits. I also have several plain shirts, it's just that I wanted to, as you call it, do something bold. I can wear this to office parties and stand out instead of just blending in with the crowd with a 'simple' suit. And I do have camel shoes and a belt which I could wear.. I just wasn't wearing those on this specific photo.

For that matter, I wasn't really striking a pose. I'm really crap at posing anyway.

Lastly, I don't like wingtips. Maybe if I was aiming at a more formal look, I would consider them. And also, don't pocket squares make a whole ensemble more formal? Or is that me just being even more ignorant?

P.S. can anyone find the suits thread from like 2 years ago?
