Have fun down there AJ! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I hope you had a good Christmas too! I'm finally online as TA on my iphone was a pain in the ass. North Carolina was spared of the storm, Raleigh at least. Though they were still removing snow in Washington DC as I drove by. I had GREAT weather while down there

Just make sure that you're using Skype through Wifi and not Data, because Data Roaming will RAPE YOU. I got hit hard while I was in New York around Halloween.

Also, I think you might be right about Skype and Half / Full Duplex, I use Skype all the time to call the offices in (the real) London and I generally have to wait for the person on the other end to stop talking before I start but again, you can't beat the price.

Yes, I don't have a data plan. I called Rogers about 2 yrs ago to get data blocking, for good measure. I view my iphone more as a mini laptop that can make calls. Skype to BC were fairly clear, but the half-duplex issue seemed to have been improved the closer I got to the router, so I guess it needs a really fast connection to support full perhaps.

Ya, it was only further west around the Charlotte or Winston Salem area that got snowed on significantly (for them)!

My buddy from NC who was up here visiting is from Kinston (hour south essentially of Raleigh/Durham area) and he said they gots nothing at all.

Toronto, Calgary, and 5 towers in Brampton...

And when I say Toronto, I don't mean GTA...

Not even Woodbridge is covered...

Anywhere outside of those areas and you pay airtime...

Phishing Android apps explain our maxed-out credit cards

There's no such thing as a perfect mobile app store strategy -- you're either too draconian, too arbitrary, or too loose in your policies, and as far as we can tell, there's no way to find a balance that isn't going to trigger an alarm here and there or get a few people worked into a lather. If you're too loose, for instance, you're liable end up with the occasional bout of malware, which is exactly what appears to have gone down recently in the Android Market with a few fake banking apps published by a bandit going as "Droid09." As you might imagine, the apps end up doing little more than stealing your information and ending your day in tears; the apps have since been pulled, but that's probably little consolation for those already affected. The moral of the story? Be vigilant, keep a close eye on those system permissions the Market warns you about as you install new apps, report sketchy ones, and -- as always -- use a hearty dose of common sense.

Google imposes $350 early termination fee for subsidized Nexus One in addition to carrier's own ETF

Here's another reason to consider going the unlocked route with the Nexus One, in addition to having the AT&T (non-3G) and international GSM option. As a number of people have noticed, Google's got its own Early Termination Fee (ETF) equivalent, here called the Equipment Recovery Fee, in the terms of sale, to the tune of $350 if you cancel within the first 120 days. Sound familiar? It's because we saw it in a leak just before the new year. Here's the kicker, though: this is in addition to any fees imposed by the carrier -- not necessarily a problem on its own, but we just glanced at T-Mobile's terms of sale, and sure enough, there's an associated ETF up to $200. If we're reading this right, Nexus One owners who decide to end their service after the 14-day trial period is over but before four months have passed will be hit with upwards of $550 in fees -- more than if you bought the phone outright from the start, especially when you factor in the upfront $180. There hasn't been enough time for someone to tempt fate, but who knows -- come January 20th when early adopters' trial period ends, there might be some interesting stories abound.

ROGERS - IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING CHANGES TO YOUR LOCAL CALLING AREA

The local calling area for the cities below will be changing effective March 10, 2010 to align with standard boundaries across the industry. Local calling areas are the areas in which you can make or receive calls without incurring long distance charges. These changes will provide clarity around our local calling area boundaries and may make your bill easier to understand. As a result of these changes, some of your calls may be rated as long distance, which would first appear on your next invoice after the effective date. All other aspects of your service will remain the same.

Palm Pre Plus shows off multitasking upgrade with 50 simultaneous apps

Yea, you read that right -- fifty apps loaded side by side by freaking side on the Pre Plus, and the thing just kept on ticking. The chaps over at Pre Central decided to test out specifically how much of an improvement the doubling of RAM and storage in the new handset delivered, and they were not disappointed. Opening up the same apps on both phones, they found the original Sprint Pre (sporting a mere 256MB of RAM) ran out of puff at the 13 app mark, whereas the Pre Plus soldiered on until a nice round fifty was reached. Go past the break to see the video evidence for yourself -- long live multitasking!
