Boring race Bring on Spa! A track where it really belongs to Schumacher as he won his first race there in '91 or something in wet conditions. So, we already know the winner. But I'm looking forward to see all the other drivers perform as this race was cancelled last year. Who knows even michael might make a mistake?

Posted by Trance Nutter on Aug-16-2004 13:18:

No chance of a mistake from Michael

That was a really boring race, probably the first time I fast forwarded through a section of race (I taped it)

I reckon BAR will be lucky if that Contracts Board says that Button can't leave, otherwise you gotta say Williams is gonna have a pretty formidable team next year!!

Does anyone remember the Spa race back in 98 when Coulthard speared off into the wall after la source and took out 60% of the field
THEN later, Schumacher crashed into him while trying to overtake him? THEN fisichella crashed into the pit wall...

NOT to mention those two awesome 180mph crashes in practice at Eau Rouge

THAT was one of the most shocking weekends ever(I wish there were more crashes like that in F1)

Posted by TOR on Aug-29-2004 14:04:

what an amazing GP! full of incidents and overtaking manoeuvres (gotta love Montoya)

well deserved victory for Raikkonen, he was really on it today.

Posted by Trance Nutter on Aug-30-2004 07:33:

Ya gotta feel sorry for Zonta, coming easy fourth only for that piece of crap Toyota to let go. That result would have been really good not only for Zonta next year but for Toyota as a team.

haha yeah just as they start saying "zonta may be in luck here" like 2mins later he goes out

Posted by TOR on Sep-12-2004 13:59:

great victory by Rubens Barrichello, finally it's his turn.

worst drivers of the day: Zsolt Baumgartner and Antonio Pizzonia

lol, dunno how many times i saw them on the grass, i completely lost count..

Posted by Kinde on Sep-12-2004 14:09:

I only watched till Kimi retired... How come his car always breaks down?!..

It's also beyond me how the fuck did Ferrari manage to take the first two places? Wasn't Schumi like 20 secs behind at one point? And I thought Ruben's chances to win were over after his very early pitstop to change the tyres.

Posted by TOR on Sep-12-2004 14:19:

the reason is simple.. Ferrari have the best car. Michael put in a series of very quick laps after he had cleared Pizzonia. and Barrichello, who was on a three stop strategy, did the same thing after Button and Alonso had made their stops.

Posted by noikeee on Sep-12-2004 14:27:

bleh, i was thinking button could win it, but ferrari's once again proved me wrong

Posted by Soeder on Sep-12-2004 19:53:

did anyone see the incidence where the "track crew" denied to push Alonzo's car so he could resume driving?
hes engine was running, and his front weels was one the track...
isn't that exactly the same thing that happend last season? where the crew DID push Schumi's car...

Posted by TOR on Sep-13-2004 13:36:

i think a new rule was introduced this year where a driver gets penalised if the marshals help him back on the track.

Well, the race was in Monza, wich is the home circuit of Ferrari. I think if Alonso was inside a red car the people have helped him. But since he drives a Renault...

umm, no, no such rule had been introduced...

anyways, i thought this was the best race of the season... button had 1st place locked, but then, wtf happened?! oh well, at least BAR is making a run at ferrari, and they seem to be the only ones... i can't wait for next season, i just hope they pick up a good driver to replace button...

Directly from Formula1.com:
As a general rule a driver must drive the car alone and unaided. However, if a driver stops in a dangerous position during a race it is the responsibility of the marshals to move the car to safety as quickly as possible. This may involve assisting a driver if he is unable to drive the car.

The rule (as far as I understand it):
A driver may receive outside help if his car is in a dangerous position (eg, MSC on the edge of the track at Nurburg last year, Alonso at the edge of the track on Sunday). If his car is not in a dangerous position (eg stranded in the middle of a sand trap) he will be penalised for receiving outside help.

Using this rule (which is how Martin Brundle explained it) Alonso should have received help to remove his car from a dangerous position. There is however some ambiguity in this rule.

Posted by TOR on Sep-14-2004 13:03:

i remember Martin Brundle saying Alonso would be penalised if he received assistance from the marshals, but i could be wrong.

in any case, in my opinion Alonso was in a much more dangerous position than Michael Schumacher at the Nurburgring, since he was right outside of a very tight chicane. the hairpin at Nurburg is much wider and even if someone was to outbreak himself into that corner, it would have been quite easy to avoid running into Michael.

so if the rule posted above is correct, i must say i'm quite suprised the marshalls did not wish to help him out of the gravel trap.

Posted by Trance Nutter on Sep-14-2004 13:23:

The first bit is correct (and correlates almost exactly to the FIA rule, I checked after I posted, rule 160 I think it was), the second bit is my interpretation.

Brundle said something along the lines of: Alonso will be penalised if he receives assistance, (the camera then changed to on board), but he is in a dangerous position there.
I watched that bit today so it is pretty fresh in my memory. The Nurburg incident set a precedent of it being okay for marshals to move a car if it is in a dangerous position and allowing the driver to continue, the way I see it is that Alonso should also have been given help. If the FIA changed their interpretation after Nurburgring, thats okay, but MSC went unpunished for a similar incident so if there was no change Alonso should have been extended the same assistance.

There must have been a change of interpretation, its the only explanation as far as I can see - remember the marshals are under race control directions so it wasn't a case of it being Italian marshals.

Trulli has been sacked by Renault

Jacques Villeneuve will perform a two day test for the team at Silverstone this week and is rumored to replace Trulli for the last three races of this season.

Posted by TOR on Sep-15-2004 17:03:

and while we're at it, Jacques Villeneuve just signed a two year deal with Sauber.

Posted by mute79 on Sep-16-2004 00:01:

yeah, i heard about this earlier today... about time he came back... too bad he couldn't have stayed on another year with BAR, cuz jv/jb duo would've been amazing this season...

speaking of which, BAR desparately needs some good drivers for next season since JB has decided to split... Sato is ok, but hes there more because of political reasons than anything else... wouldn't it be great if BAR acquired JPM for next season and if JB stayed on for another year, then they'd be the only ones to truly fight the ferraris really...

Posted by Trance Nutter on Sep-16-2004 00:45:

JPM is on his way to McLaren, so no BAR for him.

So far David Couthard hasn't found a seat for next year, he should look to BAR, I think thats really the only top driver without a seat for next year so far.

Ferrari
MSC
Rubens

Williams
Mark Webber
Jenson Button (depending on contract argument with BAR)

McLaren
Kimi
Montoya

Renault
Alonso
Fisichella

BAR
Sato
?

Sauber
Villeneuve
Massa

Toyota
Ralf
Probably Trulli

They are the line ups for next year for the top/big budget teams, really the only hole for David Coulthard is at BAR, unless he ends up somewhere like Jordan, Jaguar or leaves altogether........

Posted by TOR on Sep-16-2004 11:11:

according to Martin Brundle, David Coulthard is looking at Jaguar. but since Sauber confirmed Jacques Villeneuve, BAR could definitely be an option for him now.

it's a bit of a shame Jacques is on his way to Sauber, because he'll be in the same position as he was at BAR.. he may well score a couple of points, but that's about it. Sauber is not a winning team, which BAR is at the moment. maybe his difficult relationship with David Richards was the decisive factor, but still.. i can't help but feeling he would be better of at BAR.

Trulli has been confirmed.

Posted by noikeee on Sep-16-2004 16:19:

while we're at it, there's a (unlikely?) chance Tiago Monteiro (yay, a portuguese driver) may sign for Minardi as he's their test driver. like anyone cares about Minardi

what's happening to Cristiano da Matta? and Nick Heidfeld, he's a decent driver, won't he ever jump to a bigger team?

ah, and i saw this rumour at the newspapper that Dallara may be on their way back to F1 the following season (2006?). Also tv commentators were saying Jaguar may be renamed to Ford.
