That sword is the sword that was used to murder Imam Ali and it is very symbolic and a very important day in the shia muslim nations.

There you have it folks, the sword that killed Ali is a symbol for Shias much like the cross that killed Jesus is for Christians. And Syria has a minor but powerful/vocal Shia population from what I know- where the picture comes what I hear. What the hell was all the rockus in this thread about anyway?? So the guy has an interesting piece around his neck? Big f******* deal.

To be honest, I burst out laughing when I saw the picture of the dude with the "sword" around his neck. With all this hysteria, I was actually expecting to find a real bad-ass blade.

your missing the point. Its not whether the sword is an important symbol (it pretty obviously is) its what it symbolises. Malek is claiming that it symbolises "convert to Islam or die" which is a load of bollox. We now have two reasons why the sword might be important - the sword of Ali, and the sword on the Saudi Arabian flag (which is what Malek originally said). However, these two are obviously gonna be different cos Saudi Arabia is hardly likely to have the Shia emblem on their flag are they? And besides, the Saudi sword represents the person who conquered the land (not sure if this is right but I think it was from the Turks maybe around 1900/1915 ish?) So basically, you are right to say that the sword(s) a merely symbols associated with important people in Islam/Arabism just like the cross is associated with Jesus. Christians dont wear the crucifix round their necks cos they agree with killing Jews do they?!

hehe I was about to edit my post this morning but you already mentioned it .

There is also another one which shows two swords crossing eachother which from what I understand it shows brotherhood.Again I could be wrong on this.

"Pakis" is a racist term in the UK just to let ya know! And you you can buy me a pint if Pakistan come to Headingley cos I live next door to the stadium!
