no worries, i am bringing my neuros portable recorder and i will be recording the whole night in 44.1 khz wav (lossless) for a true to form recording, outputs permitting! i will keep the lossless WAV masters and re-encode everything into 256kb/s mp3, by request i'll provide CD's with the full WAV mixes....

it will be no problem space wise, i have the full 30 GB to use, and 1 hour of mix @ 44.1 khz wav is about 800 MB, so there is plenty of room. i'll need one of the (RCA) outputs on the mixer, however, or else there wouldn't be much of a point in recording in all WAV to preserve the highest degree of audio clarity of course if the mixer can provide more than 1 output it would definitely not hurt for someone else to record to their laptop also. we can compare sources then after its all said and done.

on an aside, i was actually thinking of bringing a 2nd recording source, like my laptop, and then setting it up with a crowd mic to record the crowd also. i could then come back home and bring the mixer pipe from the neuros, and the crowd mic, and sync it up a la the "mixed live" series by moonshine

Shit dude that's quite a setup! This is going to be awesome ONLY 2 DAYS!

Posted by tylerc on Apr-07-2005 08:03:

damn, sounds like jam has his shit together. i'm definitely looking forward to hearing all the sets. i actually had the same idea about the crowd mic, it may be a cool touch to the recording.....unless no one shows up and the mic just picks up some cricket chirping...

So the ones that helped promote this dont get to cut anyone in line?

Posted by phreek on Apr-07-2005 20:10:

I think we can do something for TAs on the roll call

Posted by Atari Addict on Apr-07-2005 20:51:

Oh yeah i didn't even think about that...if there ends up being a huge line TAs(and crew) should deffinatly get in quicker heh

Here is the mixer I guess we'll be using on Saturday... Stanton SMX-401. I put an arrow pointing at where you want to keep the input signal at on the channel LED's to keep the master out of the red.

There is a -3db dip at the center of the crossfader... I like that feature, just letting you guys know its there.

Any other questions?

ROB OWNS!!!

Posted by jam.iii on Apr-08-2005 00:34:

nioce 1 brotha! i'm so stoked, just gotta make it through 1 more day of work!! that stanton mixer looks exactly like my numark, all the switches are in the exact same place.

just outta curiosity does the place have their own speakers with a soundboard and all, or is the setup all up to us? if its up to us do we have a soundboard or is it just gunna be an amp -> speakers? just trying to figure out what our output situation is like.

just as a backup, someone else should bring a laptop with them... from my experience with field recordings over the years it never hurts to have a backup recording source *just in case* i have an "INport" that goes 2xRCA -> USB 2.0 for stereo recording and i'll bring that. i would use my lappy but my USB hub on my laptop is broken so i can't use the INport, only my line in (recording sounds a lot better with the INport) but i will bring my laptop anyways in case no one else has one available. you would only need about 1 GB free so we can record the night in a decent bitrate mp3 as backup. then i can use my mono line in for a crowd mic, if conditions permit

...and no, not to record crickets chirping lol. if that happens, i will just re-mix the feed with a "sounds of nature" disc, part 1 - summer night (crickets + cicadas). i think people would get the point

Posted by jam.iii on Apr-08-2005 00:43:

oh, just saw your last post rob... let me say that if you guys are planning on using your laptops for the sets, don't worry at all about the backup recording. i'm just saying if someone has a laptop with around 1 GB of free space thats gunna be sitting at home while we party by all means bring it along!

I'm paying a guy to provide the PA/monitors, amps, etc. He will be there around 1pm on Saturday to set everything up. Joel should also be there setting up his lighting rig.

Posted by tylerc on Apr-08-2005 06:00:

Oooooooooooooh tough choice.

The smx-401 is almost identical to my RM3-S, but the djm500 is sweeeeeeet. on-board effects *drool*
