where i live in the west midlands, we've had absolutely no EDM nights running ever (apart from the odd visit from judge jules).
its a typical "binge drink" city where everyone goes out to get smashed out of their heads with the "personality" djs playing the usual churned up RnB and comercial pop-dance stuff.
its really a mixture of reasons why trance has a bad name and thats down mostly to the media.

trance hit off big in the uk in 1999 but a year later, once the media jumped on the bandwagon, everyone went looking for something more cool and different to whats "big" the previous year.
trance is a victim of its own success from 1999 in the uk, while EDM got split into 100's of different cool sub genre's, trance went the other way. money spinning pop-dance tracks stole the "trance" name to make their quick cash and after having to put up with countless bullsh=t being churned out by the major record labels, people suddenly grew a strong dislike to the name "trance".

9 times out of 10, if you stop someone in the street and ask them about trance, you will get the following responses....

* Drugs
* No singing
* Tiesto is the best (even though they've never seen him)
* cartoon/videogame music

where i live, the majority of people either are into rock and nothing else, the usual RnB/hip hop or D&B.
when they ask you what your into and you say firstly "dance music", they frown and usally make some sarcastic comment but when you say "trance", you suddenly become a second class citizen in their eyes. thats not even mentioning that you spin it.
ive been going out with my girlfriend whos into rock (linkin park style) for 2 years this september and im only just starting to get her into dance music.
apart from proper gigs, ive been countless times told by people at parties that they either dont want me to play or want me to let someone else playing other stuff to have half of my set time without them actually having heard what i play.
it all changes though when i do start and the same guys who didnt want me playing are all over me saying how good the music is. im not one to get all petty and say anything so i keep my head down and get on with it and not let it bother me but its a problem when your sending demo's off to promoters you've met and once they find out you play trance they either dont listen to your cd or you basically have to tie them to a chair and force them to listen.

ive given up trying to explain what i like/play, i just say here's a cd, hope you like it. less hassle that way.

as for the drugs thing.... ive been hooked on trance since about 1996 (in its various forms and sounds)and ive never once taken pills and people i meet out cant believe it. they think that either the only way to have fun or get into trance is to bosh as many disco biscuits down as possible and dance like a twat. if they wanna do that then thats cool but ive never felt the need on top of the fact im shit scared that if i take one, something bad will happen.

trance has a identity problem and the media hasnt been doing it justice.
trance just doesnt seem cool to people or kids so it gets a bad name.
with funky house, ive noticed alot of the people who are into it have been into trance before but as the "coolness" went, they got into funky house cos it was "cool" to dress in your top designer gear and drink wine at the bar with your blond mullet and white shoes. the same goes for Rnb with the "wannabe" gangsters with their plastic bling, giving it large with their 16 year old slags.

theres not alot thats cool about trance really. the mainstream following public is into the "image" and sweaty dark packed main rooms arn't great for your image unfortunately.

i like all different types of music, even some pop. i feel that if you cant diverse into other genre's and understand different tastes then you cant fully understand the music you like more than anything else and eventually you get bored of that single genre and move onto something else (like when the "goth" kids grow up and stop listening to hard rock and start going to parties and clubs etc).

the trance that we all like on here once you've used a big filter to get rid of the "ian van dahls" and the rest of the comercial stuff, needs to form a new identity to give itself a chance but without the media and major record labels behind it, then it will be pushed further and further towards being totaly outcast from the public eye.

thats why places where i live will always be full of binge drinkers, under-age kids, show offs, "personality"/cheese djs and sh*thouse clubs for ever im affraid.

so in a nutshell we have to steer media's representation and expression of trance music such that the cheese and poseurs and drug-usage stereotype are reduced heavily. It's not likely it'll work to that degree but it's not impossible either. I'm sorry to hear your neck of the woods is that trance-deprived/warped.

well yeah, you know what i mean :-)

it will probably never happen like but with the drugs thing, its not just trance thats the sole cause of drug use as some of the media try to put it.

look at rock with the heroin, hip hop and its love of weed etc. wherever there is music and young and old people going out to enjoy themselves, people will probably be doing some drug or another, its not just to do with trance like everyone seems to think.

i can honestly say that the level of people i see taking pills at events has gone down a hell of alot in the last couple of years, people wanna go to listen to the music more and enjoy each djs sets rather than get out of their brain which is positive.

the media always likes to have a scape goat and in the music world, trance is the music industrys ugly duckling. too quickly disgarded by narrow minded people before they discover how good it is.

the problem with my area is that booze and sex sells. the clubs and bars know that if they play sh*tty comercial pop, cheese and Rnb then the girls in their short skirts will turn up, the larger boys with all the cash will follow looking for a shag and they will buy the beers before dancing like idiots to the latest dj sammp pop-dance and the bars will make a hell of a lot more cash than running a specialist night or having any particular music policy. it will never change in places like worcester, i suppose its part of british culture?.

there have been one or two nights started up but are usually run and dj'd by over hyped and arrogant people who spend more time trying to look cool rather than put on a great night and make sure the musics top quality, they never last more than 2 or 3 events. shame really but thats the way it is.

if nothing else then it's good to see someone else here who can see that perspective and hold trance true to themselves at least.

fuck what everyone else thinks, i play my music loud and proud for everyone to hear.

Well, I don't hear too many comments since I listen to mostly Prog now. When I was Mr. Epic though, I took a little shit as Trance is taboo in the home of Techno. Detroit is the one place where when people say they like Techno they most of the time actually know what they're talking about and like Techno. But really, if anyone's got a problem with your music tell them to fuck off. People with real musical taste like or at least appreciate everything so the opinions of people who make remarks should mean very little.
When I drive through Detroit I let everyone here my music.

And as far as the drug thing, not to disrespect Zeppelin or Floyd by comparing them to Trance, but they can both be complimented with a smoke and other things as well. Yea, Trance can be enhanced, but so can a lot of other things - you butter your bread, right?
