No spam here, so I won't put the link, but for those who check my website, I'm posting tips on there... only kick, snare, clap and hat, but there's more to come.

Hi

I watched all your videos and it is so refreshing to see someone create from scratch the sounds and not use samples.

In my mind there is only truly a handful of people doing this still (perhaps Arksun also).

I found it very inspirational.

Thank you and keep them coming

Not sure if this was posted but most people prob already know.

I have prob around 200 uncompleted songs on my pc and one day I literally spent the whole day just listening to all the songs I made and my progression in producing.

I passed about 10 songs that had AMAZING kicks and decided to convert them into wavs and put them in their own little folder and now I use these kicks in pretty much every song I make now.

Also, I didn't like the idea of it but I started slicing kicks from the best tracks in the world and adding my own little twists to them.

Like the Oompa Loompa song has one of the best kicks I've ever heard before, so I stole that and ran it through some fx and converted it.

And other songs from Ferry and Tiesto also have some really solid thumpy kicks. I know some people enjoy spending 3 months working on a single kick drum. But I efficiency is just as important to me as quality.

Don't thank me... thank the Ableton users and all the well-talented and still unknown producers who opened my eyes.

95% of the sounds can be achieved just as you can use a stick and a flint for a fire. A well-balanced equation of knowledge and accidental manipulation.

Unison waves are just so piece-of-cake for example...

The art of sound design is something that gets lost among the abundance of mediocre and featureless romplers that I won't name here. This is why I kept saying that the best way to get better in design is to get rid of ALL presets when you are ready to do so.

It must be just like cooking after all...

I can't suggest this to reaktor users wanting to design their own synths and fx, as the crap manual makes it almost impossible. 1000 pages of half-nonsense, really!

Most of this info is on the web, you know. There's nothing spectacular in doing the math.

So true.

I think people forget that the foundation of electronic music is exactly that experimentation. Before people wanted to make songs, they just wanted to create amazingly interesting sound.

I've been a long time operator user now and must say when I first started using it back on Live 5, it was limited. I hated that you could only use 4 operators etc for your designs. However, with Live 7's racks and improved routing...it's a fantastic little synth imo. Can make probably just about anything with the right combination of skill and motivation...

can someone please explain how to perform a stereo mix bus with Live 8? Never mixed that way before..

Posted by Andy28 on Dec-11-2010 01:04:

Not sure what you mean but if your trying to follow the first post (aint read the rest) by sending kick and bass to be compressed together then..
Select your kick and bass channel while holding Ctrl, then when highlited press Ctrl + G to group them, place the comp on the group channel.

Dude, you had a raise a 3 year old thread about making kick drum samples from the dead to ask that?

The internet is fucking weird.

Anyone else ever read a thread from years back and remember the time they first read it?

It's a very odd nostalgic feeling. Really weird.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Dec-12-2010 00:59:

i search my own posts all the time, its not very nostalgic but very embarrassing. i like to embarrass myself, it makes me stronger.

I actually know what you mean. Also a lot of people contributing in even this thread (2008, which isn't even that old) are not around here anymore and they used to be avid posters.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Dec-12-2010 01:08:

yeah this place has gone down the hill the last year or two.

I remember drinking tea in my first year of uni reading some threads on here. That's 6 years ago, and I can remember bits of the day surrounding the thread, etc.

I also enjoy looking at old posts by long since departed users (especially the really old MD forums) talking about events and stuff that happened when I was still in high school. I always find myself thinking about what they do now.

Things seemed so much more exciting back then. Never get excited about going out any more.

I miss playing Legend of Zelda on N64 till 2am then going to sleep listening to ATB. Dreaming of the Future. I miss the future.

The perfect kick?

Posted by DJ Robby Rox on Dec-13-2010 19:11:

On the topic of being embarassed at old posts I can't believe what an utter pathetic newbie I sounded like and that was only 2-3 years ago when I had like 5 years experience already.

Talking about "tiesto & ferry" having the best kicks and what not what a fucking joke. I think I'm realizing though when I came here a few years ago, even with those 5 years "experience" I actually didn't know a single g/damn thing about anything. In the last 3 years I've been a member here I've easily learned double what I did when I was fumbling alone with sounds by myself and not posting in forums.

A lot of people say this place is going to shit and its not what it use to be but its amazing what I've learned here because I honestly did not learn anything useful at all those first 5 years. I basically sat down and just made music but never really read fundamental rules like lowcutting bass and keeping channels low. I was actually so stupid at one point I'd make sure all my levels were at 0db because I never comprehended the volume of 2 sounds resulted in a higher overall sound. I'd see it in the master but I always thought it was the compressors/fxs doing it.
But coming to this forum I think its actually been harder unlearning all the bad habits I taught myself then to learn better more effective ones. I think I'm just gonna start telling people I have less experience than I really do because I did waste a large portion of those first 5 years not learning anything. I just never realized as a newbie that music was a complicated/technical process. Always thought you just mixed sounds and wallah. What a joke.

If you REALLY want to learn something? buy this book!
