and if u guys want to blame someone for high gas prices blame the chinese. they have a high demand for it since theyve had an industrial revolution in the last 15 years. thats why the gas prices are so high the demand from china is huge. our supply and our demand has been constant for the last 10 years. its china's that exploded which boosted up the price for gas per barrel. no iraq no new orleans. CHINA

the problem with hydrogen is that the process to make hydrogen to use in cars produces just about as much pollution as running a gas car

Let me elaborate a bit more on my point.

I agree that many companies will make a fortune in the rebuilding effort. Companies that provide infrastructure, building materials, food etc will stand to profit a lot from this disaster. Naturally, the huge reconstruction effort required will create many jobs and provide a boost to some section of the economy.

HOWEVER, rising energy prices and pressures on oil supply will effect EVERY industry in the country and result in slowed growth, higher costs and possibly reduced productivity. Also, almost one million people have been displaced and most now have no place to go home to. The cost of housing and feeding these people is enormous and this will also cut into the government's budget. Don't forget that most of these people will now be without jobs because their workplaces and their livelihoods have been destroyed.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that the negative impacts will outweigh the "positive" impacts to the economy from this situation.

P.S. I don't really support your conspiracy theory about deliberate delays in the rescue operation in order to benefit companies. It seems to me like the authorities and the government are just really, really shit!

Indeed. It will interesting to see how the feds distribute the contracts, however.

Can't just say let new orleans rot. Sure there are alot of bad eggs down in the dirty south but there has to be a shiny star some where down there.

People who think that New Orleans should just rot are retarded though. But the more these, "oopsies" in our country happen the more I get worried. The war in Iraq has drained us, losing domestic jobs, the pseudo-healthy economy, the rising deficit, china-the near future super power, and now hurricane Katrina...


I was nearly sick to my stomach, listening to the "4 More Years!" chanting during the election. Holds even more relevance now.

I have to disagree....any large increase in gas prices does affect the economy. We are already seeing airlines add a fuel tax to the price of tickets to offset the increased costs of fuel. Every product we buy has to be shipped to stores in order for us to buy them. With the increased costs of gas the shipping companies will increase their price to offset this. The increases will continue down the line until it finally reaches the consumer.

On top of that....if we are spending more money on fuel we have less money to spend on other things. We still need to buy the essential items such as food, clothing and shelter but those costs will all rise as well. Our disposable income will become less and less and if we do not have money to spend then the economy will suffer.

You are not looking at the big picture.

Georgia dropped the state tax on gas cuz it was peeking $4

luckily we're down to a little over $3 again.

Rising logistical and transportion costs have been a major burden to making the economy grow or even attain any form of stability; that has been a serious issue especially since 9/11.

Now more then ever globally anyone involved in any form of transportation be it commodoties or travel is at constant risk of losing jobs or having to make major sacrificies.

Going from one catastrophy 9/11 to another ( Katrina ) we cannot possibly talk about any form of growth but an ongoing struggle.
