listening to them was (mostly) enjoyable but parts of the scoring weren't... i didn't like the system.

firstly... a 30:70 creative:technical ratio seemed way out to me. you could give a set absolutely no thought whatsoever and throw together a random bunch of tunes with no flow/originality at all but so long as it was mixed properly you'd get 70%? i really don't dig that. i think good flow & originality are true arts.. that are far harder to learn than beatmatching/harmonic mixing or whatever.

and as for the melodics? seems pointless. some mixes made more of an effort to mix melodically than others, but if i'd marked them high for that then it would have been unfair on those who used less melodic styles. the only way i found i could judge it fairly was by taking points off for each transition where the bassline keys clashed (this was the best way i could work out going by the rule description sphere wrote).. but then if someone has an 11 track mix, then just 3 keyclashes would cost them 8 points (this was actually the case for one of the mixes). 8 might not seem like alot out of 100, but if you consider the difference 8 points under the originality section makes, it doesn't balance out. a mix with no clashes & 2/10 originality vs a mix with 3 clashes & 10/10 originality... to rate them the same seems silly

and as for phrasematching.. i think anyone considering entering a comp like this should be competent enough to know how to phrasematch anyway... it's not exactly the most challenging thing to master (esp on software where you don't have to worry about slow torque times ).. and 15 whole points just for getting it right seems a bit generous to me

anyhow.. yeah i'm prob the first one to complain about it but whatever . i'll happily judge the next comp too (if there is one), but only if the system is changed; melodics section removed & the phrasematching section combined with beatmatching (so mark out of 20 for overall beat/phrase matching).. then have it all out of 60

Smile

thanks and very big respect for all the judges for listening and rating our sets
I'm pretty surprised. My mix was recorded 2 hours before the beginning of the contest beacuse i forgot about it. Had some problems with beatmatching my new tracks, so i thought i'll be the last one. When i saw my place i was like WTF :O
when is the next contest starting?

anyway i wanted to say that it's been a really nice journey listening to all those mixes. i'm sorry i wasn't able to write comments also but i don't have that much free time left now with uni work and full time job.

it must've been bad, it finished below my last minute rushed trainwreck! Infact my tracklist is probably the only thing going for mine

Posted by mr2gti on May-06-2006 09:07:

Happy with 7th, Stills shows that I have alot of practice still to do.

Well done Rock-a-bye, which CD exactly did you rip it from?

Posted by Insertion on May-06-2006 10:17:

Only the 11th..hmmm... I've expected a higher position, somewhere in the first half, but that's not a tragedy, "practice makes it perfect"
Congratulations to all the DJs for participating, respect to the judges aswell, a round of applauses for Rockabye (1st) and of course, for my romanian buddy, Last Sequence (4th)
Question: Will these sets be available for download on a site or ftp? I'm looking forward to hear all the mixes and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Posted by Rockabye on May-06-2006 11:03:

Wow. Didn't thought of winning this one.

Many thanks to all the judges for doing their job, we really appreciate it.

I will upload my mix later and hope that some of the other mixes will be available too.

Is there any chance to get all individual scores? And is there a judge who made some comments?

I don't understand what's your problem?

Maybe the judges will say something about your mix and tell you why you've got such a low score.

And where is the connection between "the kind of music we listen to" and your result? What kind of music do we listen to?

Maybe you can post your tracklist, so we'll see what kind of music we should listen to

Posted by mr2gti on May-06-2006 11:16:

To have winners, you gotta have losers and vice-versa.

Trancedelic, don't let it get to you. It happens.
