Report: Saban testifies on Williams' behalf
Dolphins coach Nick Saban testified on Ricky Williams' behalf during an appeal of a positive drug test that could cost the running back the entire 2006 season, according to a report in the Miami Herald.
A source told the Herald that Saban spoke for about 30 minutes over the telephone Monday. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene did not return a message from the Herald on Tuesday, but another attorney with experience in this type of case told the newspaper that it's normal for a coach to speak on a player's behalf.
"Obviously, you know what the coach wants, he wants the guy to play," the attorney, who asked not to be identified, told the Herald. "It's still important for the coach to speak because it gives you a sense of a guy's character and how he fits within the team and how he works."
Williams and his lawyer met Monday with NFL counsel Jeff Pash for seven hours, seeking to have the league overturn a positive drug test.
The NFL has no timetable to rule on the appeal, Williams' lawyer David Cornwell said Tuesday.
Cornwell said he and his client presented "compelling evidence" showing that disciplining Williams would "undermine the integrity" of the NFL's substance abuse policy.
The league, which doesn't acknowledge drug tests until there is a final determination, had no comment on the appeal.
If the positive test is upheld, it would be Williams' fourth violation of the substance abuse policy, meaning at least a one-year suspension.
According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, the Dolphins are hoping they can get an expedited ruling on Williams' case before the NFL draft on April 29-30. While appeal processes of this nature generally move slowly, the fact that this case has been made so public means that a ruling will likely come sometime in the next two weeks.
Previous positive tests were for marijuana, which Williams acknowledged using. But the latest test apparently involved a drug other than marijuana.
Williams retired and sat out the 2004 season. He owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract and, motivated at least partly by the need for a paycheck, he returned last year to play for Saban.
Before being allowed to return, Williams served a four-game suspension at the start of the season for his third violation of the drug program. He still ran for 743 yards last season and averaged 4.4 yards per carry while sharing playing time with rookie Ronnie Brown. Williams gained 280 yards in the final two games when Brown was hurt.
Harrington picks Dolphins, awaits Millen's move
Joey Harrington finally decided he wants Miami to be his new home. Now he's asking Lions president Matt Millen to give him the chance to go there.
Harrington, who has been given permission to shop for a trade, told the Lions on Wednesday he wants to go the Dolphins and is firm about the decision. Because he is due a $4 million bonus in June, Harrington has some control over his future because no team wants to pick up his current contract.
After working out a two-year agreement with the Dolphins more than a week ago, Harrington asked Millen to release him or make a trade with the Dolphins so he can move on with his career.
"I look forward to joining the Miami Dolphins whenever I am released or a trade is completed," Harrington said Wednesday in a statement issued by his agent, David Dunn. "The Dolphins are an ascending team with great coaching and I can't wait to get started. I certainly appreciate all that the Ford family and Matt Millen did for me.
"I learned so much in Detroit and I will always value those relationships and that experience. At the same time, I am eager to get to work with my new team, whether that happens in a day, a week or a month," he said.
The Dolphins are offering a sixth-round choice in 2007. The Lions have been asking for a third- or fourth-round choice in this year's draft. Now it's up to Millen to make a concession in his demands or hold up any move until June 15 when Harrington is due the roster bonus.
Harrington was also being pursued by the Broncos but never made a visit to Denver. Harrington did visit the Bengals, but he didn't come to a contractual agreement.
Now that Harrington has made his decision, the ball is in Millen's court.
^^^^^^
sounds like a bit of a poker match going on with millen and the dolphins..... i think miami will sit and wait until june, then millen will have no choice but to move him, or else pay up $4 mil in bonuses.
He should go to Miami, its the farthest from Detroit as possible.
Miami will be his best chance to start since i really don't feel Culpepper will be healthy enough to start out the year

Chad Johnson Gets extension
My favorite player in the Nfl gets what he deserves....
"Wide receiver Chad Johnson won't have to sweat any excessive celebration fines after agreeing to terms Thursday on a restructured contract that will pay him $35.5 million over the next six seasons. "As long as I've been doing this, I've never been able to get an extension like this," Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN.com. "In terms of 'new money,' and just being unique from the standpoint of being able to do something for a player who still had four years left on his [current] contract, it's reallymonumental."

Lavar is a Giant.
GREAT, now they have Pierce and Lavar telling them how the Redskins defense works.
Anyways, the NFC East is going to be thrilling next year. As if it needed another storyline. I also have to buy my dad another Jersey for fathers day this year cause I got him Lavar last year. I'm thinking Moss or Taylor, or ofcourse Portis.
NFL suspends Ricky Williams for 2006 season
By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer
April 25, 2006
MIAMI (AP) -- Ricky Williams will sit out another season.
The NFL suspended the troubled Miami Dolphins running back for one year Tuesday after he violated the league's substance abuse policy for the fourth time.
Williams met April 10 with NFL counsel Jeff Pash in an attempt to have the league overturn the test. He had been participating in the offseason training program at the Dolphins' complex, and he was there working out shortly before league announced that his appeal had been rejected.
"I'm disappointed with the decision, but I respect it," the 2002 NFL rushing champion said in a statement released by the team. "I'm proud of my association with the National Football League and look forward to returning to the Dolphins in 2007."
Williams also sat out the 2004 season after retiring shortly before training camp. He returned last year to play for new Miami coach Nick Saban.
Williams' previous positive drug tests were for marijuana, which he acknowledged using. The latest test apparently involved a substance other than marijuana and may have been related to his interest in holistic medicine.
Since his return last season, the NFL required Williams to undergo drug tests up to 10 times a month. He was in India studying yoga when news of his latest failed test surfaced in February.
Williams served a four-game suspension at the start of the 2005 season for his third violation of the drug program, then ran for 743 yards and averaged 4.4 yards a carry while sharing playing time with rookie Ronnie Brown.
Saban repeatedly has praised Williams' conduct and performance last season and supported him in the appeal process.
"This is a league decision, and we are disappointed in what it means for Ricky and the team," Saban said in a statement. "Ricky did an outstanding job for the Dolphins, not only as a player but also what he added as a person to the team's chemistry and to our overall success."
One sliver of good news for Saban is the timing of the decision: He now knows he's in the market for a running back in the NFL draft this weekend to back up Brown.
The suspension represents a financial blow for Williams, who owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract when he retired in 2004. His return last season was motivated partly by the need for a paycheck, and that may be a reason for him to return in 2007.
Attorney David Cornwell represented Williams in his appeal.
"We raised substantial and legitimate issues arising out of the application of the NFL's policy and program for substances of abuse," Cornwell said in a statement. He urged the players' union and ownership to "review the issues we raised on the appeal ... and restore the original intention of the NFL's policy to put equal focus on helping NFL players as is put on testing and suspending them."
Last season Williams laughingly described himself as weird and compared his career to a roller coaster. But he also dispelled his reputation as an aloof, selfish pothead, winning praise from teammates and winning the local media's annual postseason Good Guy Award, given to the player most cooperative with reporters.
Williams won the 1998 Heisman Trophy at Texas, and the next year, New Orleans Saints coach Mike Ditka traded his team's entire draft to acquire the running back. Williams wore a wedding dress for an infamous photo shoot with Ditka upon arriving in New Orleans, and the resulting backlash began to sour Williams' three-year stay with the Saints.
The Dolphins made their biggest trade in more than 30 years to acquire him in 2002, giving up two first-round draft picks, and he rushed for 1,853 yards that season.
Now his career could be over. If Williams does try to return next year, he'll be 30 years old and will have played a total of 12 games in the previous three seasons.
"Ricky is obviously disappointed," said his agent, Leigh Steinberg. "He'll need to work hard to get back to the league in 2007."
Where's Miami in ya'lls rankings now?
really does change things ...
i predict travis minor will run 1000 yards in 2006 .
.
but this is a real blow to the running attack. brown could pick up the slack, because he is a quality running back.
anyways, reggie bush . who thinks he is going to be a bust in the nfl ? this story surfacing with his agent, and his house . wow.
