the refs basically gave up calling fouls early in the 2nd half...guess they got tired blowing that whistle

Posted by smallSHEEP on Jun-17-2006 21:02:

That game was fun, I had a smile on my face the whole of the second half. Italy played badly and the Americans played with a lot of spirit even when down to 9 men. At the end of the day the US still has a chance of going through so this is a great result for them. The italian papers are going to have a field day.

What do you think, they fell as soon as they got touched, some were fouls but after the Czech game the U.S. actually tried to mark instead of letting guys walk to the net and have open space like Rocisky did to tee off. Much more heart in this game, too bad the Uruguayan ref was a jackass and that goes beyond the red cards. A good ref is one you never even have to talk about after the game.

LOL this is sooo true,

Bunch of pretty boys falling so the referees have to pamper them?

I think they ran out of stretchers in this game..

yea but was does irregularities mean. is it making calls that the other refs didnt agree with? favoring a side over another? not being able to justify or give reasoning for calls? calling something a foul and then letting it go later on?

really, maybe from your perspective, the second red card given to the Mastroeni was a clear make up call for the one he had to hand out to De Rossi, that ref was turd, nothing right about him in that game. I want to see the players play not the refs face on my tube.

did you see when the one guy went out on the stretcher and then keller took the free kick and almost hit him when he was trying to get back on the field

Posted by luisjb82 on Jun-17-2006 21:09:

A fair draw for both teams.

All 3 red cards were all deserved in my opinion and the ref was also right by ruling that offisde in USA's 2nd goal. De Rossi's elbow doesn't need much explaining; Mastroeni going for that tackle, what was he thinking?, he could have easily broken Pirlo's ankle on that play and then Pope knowing he has a yellow card and going for an stupid tackle specially when there was no need to.

I blame Arenas for not taking Pope off the pitch before, he could have been red carded earlier in the first half and he still risked it with him.

Very exciting game in the end as this group has certainly become the group of death, all 4 teams still have a chance of making it through.

Posted by LittleGoku on Jun-17-2006 21:09:

The red cards were correct. I agree with the officiating, I do not agree with the Italians falling on every other play.

I called this the group of death but everyone laughed, Im sure argentina and netherlands are eating icecream right now watching this game. They already have their tickets. lol

Yet he refereed a World Cup game, what a joke, why was he even on the pitch in the first place. Blatter and Fifa pure genius putting this guy out there. I can't see him doing anymore games after this one. Should send him back to Montivideo now. I hate to see referees having an influence on the game. This game just died in the second half.

If you had played football in your life, I'm rather surprised to see you saying this, Pirlo's career might have ended on that play... I played football in high school and college and I watched many broken ankles suffered after those type of tackles.

You can't deny that it was a red card, Seriously man!

Those kind of tackles has already been said that they would be punished with a direct red. He could've break Pirlo's legs

Posted by luisjb82 on Jun-17-2006 21:14:

exactly... the ref was right on the money on those deciding calls.

I understand you being patriotic mate, but the Mastroeni red card was a good call by the referee. Disallowing Beasley's goal was a good call as well.

The referee was excellent, don't you see that only you Americans are complaining about him?

A referee has to use some sort of common sense discretion on a play, he went right away for a straight red on the second red card when a yellow could have been given out and a stern warning that next play like that you are off. He had given one already to Italy and found it convenient to pull that one out on a play that was not warranting red but yellow at best. The game is over and for all their diving I hope Italy is bounced, bunch of pretty boy cowards, Ghana and Czechs should advance in my book.

Posted by Clovis on Jun-17-2006 21:17:

Its always funny to see guys with multiple tatoos crying on a stretcher cause their foot got stepped on.

Face it man, it was a red card. This has already been said that it will be a red card no matter what has happened in the game..

I understand you're angry though

No patriotism here, I follow world football and know the U.S. game is not of world class caliber, that is obvious to anyone though. I just hate to see a ref have so much influence in a games outcome in the World Cup, especially when issues existed about him before he even took the field in prior questionable refereeing.

No, that tackle warranted a straight red card. I suggest you watch it again, in slow motion. I've seen red cards being dealt for far less.

hey hey, im american as well.

I agree with those calls. However, it was hilarious how those italians were flopping left and right the entire game. What's even better is that czech republic and italy will murder each other in the next game for the ticket pass to the next round.

Dude you must not know your football at all, pardon me but what you're saying makes absolutely no sense... what part of Pirlo's ankle could have broken haven't you understood?, geeez I played football and I know what I'm saying because I was on both ends, doing those type of tackles and also receiving them.

Discretion you say, take another look at the play and notice Pirlo's balance was on 1 leg, the one Mastroeni tackled... lol serious man, what are you on?
