It's entirely possible he was a good DJ without being a skillful one.

I spun for 2 hours at an old youth club using Pioneers when I was 15. It was my first time and I got a good reaction. It only took me about 10 mins to work out what the equipment did.
I haven't spun since. It wasn't my destiny.

Ok so who is better a pianist, a dj, a super-star football player, a scientist or spider-man?

I dont see how its even arguable that instrumentalists\artists are equal to DJ's. I think I explained my position in my earlier post coming from a large instrumental background in viola, percussion, guitar, bass, piano and a few other tricks of the trade. I've been an instrumentalist for years now, and I've been DJ'ing about 2.
In those 2 years, I've earned 2 residencies and countless gigs. Now of course anyone who's serious on this entire website knows that you dont get gigs because you have great tracks and mixing abilities...you get booked because of connections, which brings me to the my true point.
ANYONE CAN FUCKING DJ! In fact, its really quite disgusting. I was just cleaning house a bit, and came up with about 30 local DJ mixes....ALL OF THEM suck, not by opinion, but by honestly awful mixing and awful tracks. Sometimes a line has to be drawn at what is shit and what is somewhat decent...
So yes, anyone can DJ, however practically none can DJ well or DJ MUSICALLY. These are the DJ's who with the proper connections really go places in my opinion. To be honest, I have made it where im at today from connections and not much more. I'm certainly not terrible and definitley not fantastic either...but case in point
1. A DJ is an individual who picks records and mixes them (beatmatched, fades, cuts or what have you) live to an audience
2. DJ'ing abilities take far less time to achieve than playing a classical instrument or even something like guitar.
HOWEVER, to DJ musically and to DJ well, takes lots of time and hardwork spent in music and knowledge of how music works so a DJ can play records musically and well to whatever situation in whatever crowd just as it takes an instrumentalist years to master there instrument.
Anyone can beatmatch, few will be true DJ's.
you know who you are

Haven't been following the thread but,
What about turntablists? (or are we talking strictly mixing?)
Thats an extension of the basic mixing skill
Surely its like playing the drums (where its mostly rhythm and coordination rather than melody)
disregard if this isnt relevant here

| Originally posted by Danny Ocean wrong, theres more to djing than just beatmatching....but technically, theres plenty of DJs out there who have the ability to mix very complex sets and take it all to a different tier. Richie Hawtin, James Zabiela, Apparat, BT, Dave Clarke and Matthew Dear just to name a few. |

He should Act! Act? yes. now, do you like a DJ who ACT LIKE AN ASSHOLE? do u like when his face is seriously MISERABLE all the time? do u like when his face contain HATRED WHEN HE LOOK AT YOU? that time, you will think that in his mind said "I'm a GREAT DJ, this guy is really annoy me, get away from me! fuck you!!!" DO YOU LIKE HIM??? DO YOU WANT TO VOTE HIM??? if u watch avb, tiesto, and other great DJ. they always enjoy their music, smile and communicates with the crowd. people love that. that why people are entertained by them, they VOTE them. dont forget, learning CLUB DJ is far more easy than playing Piano. Your mom, your dad and your girfriend can learn how to beatmatch approximately in 2-4 weeks. In 3 - 6 months u can play in the club well. A few different between ur mix compared with any popular DJ. In piano, learning in 3 - 6 months is like learning a junior school material. U have to mastered Piano approximately in 7-10 years! |

THis thread is ridiculous.
So many definitions, so many variables, so many paridigms.
It's just a load of shit.
Just think whatever you want. Art can be whatever you like, and whatever you consider is art.
A DJ is a DJ. whatever else he is, it doesn' t matter, and varies between people, opinions, and DJs. Let's just agree on that atleast.

| Originally posted by Beethoven art is something special, unique and fantastic. example: a pic of monalisa is an art. number of "1.618" is art. I believe something standard hardly can be considered as art. if you considered EVERYTHING in this earth is an art, then you must go to the psychology and check your mental there. theres something wrong with your art taste. sitting is an art, standing is an art, walking is an art, drinking milk is an art, your asshole is an art and your shit is an art. ??? |

| Originally posted by DJ Nickazz Actually he's got a point there. If you have some records and you can beatmatch you can basically DJ (not good and experienced though U can mix and play records). Playing an instrument like a piano it takes much more practice before you can play a normal melody/song. Sure I already hear you guys saying: "With piano you can learn to play a melody in 1 minute". But can you learn to play proper songs and entertain the audience for an whole hour with your piano in a short amount of time? No, not atleast songs that will amuse the audience. With DJing you can play/entertain the audience for hours if you can beatmatch and have enough records. As long as you play music for them (ignoring the fact that the audience must like the tracks you play) it's allright to them. |
