Valencia street race for 2008

10 May 2007

The Spanish city of Valencia is set to host a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship next year. The race, to be known as the European Grand Prix, will be held on a newly-constructed harbour-side street circuit.

A seven-year agreement was announced on Thursday in a press conference attended by Formula One Management CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Valencian government's President Francisco Camps and Valencia's mayor Rita Barbera. The deal is conditional on Camps winning local elections next month.

The news means Spain is due to become home to two rounds of the world championship for the foreseeable future. Barcelonas Circuit de Catalunya stages the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

Valencias Mediterranean backdrop will provide a spectacular setting for the new track. The city, currently hosting the Americas Cup sailing event, is no stranger to Formula One racing. The nearby Ricardo Tormo track is a regular testing venue and Valencia has been the location for numerous car launches.

scenery looks great, i'm not so sure about the layout, looks fairly slow on paper, but i'll wait and see.

Posted by stren on May-11-2007 06:16:

slow ? doesn't look that slow to me. The scenery is amazing, monte carlo vibe (the closeness to the water) and that bridge is really something to look at by itself. I'm looking forward to the first GP there.

In the meantime, first training at Barcelona starts in less then 2 hours

That new track looks amazing, can't wait.

What's the track in that video, can someone ID it?

Jeez, lots of big announcements in Barcelona today

Singapore confirms 2008 night race
11 May 2007

Singapore will host a round of the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship, it was confirmed on Friday. The race, to be held on a new street circuit, will be the first night-time event in Formula One history.

The announcement follows the agreement of a five-year deal between FOM CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.

I am very pleased to welcome Singapore to the Formula One family and we look forward to this exotic addition to the championship, said Ecclestone. This will be the first fully lit street race in Formula One.

As a night race we anticipate it will quickly establish itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on our calendar. I know the Formula One drivers, teams and fans are all looking forward to coming to Singapore next year.

The new race is scheduled to take place towards the end of the calendar in September or October. The timing of the night event means it can be broadcast at a convenient time for European TV audiences as well as thrilling local fans. It is also expected to have a hugely positive economic impact on the region.

"We are delighted to have reached a deal to bring this landmark event to Singapore, and look forward to working with F1, the Singapore Tourism Board and the business community to deliver a great race and vibrant support events together with the very best of Singapores famed hospitality and cuisine. Ong added.

The Singapore Grand Prix will take place on public roads around the Marina Bay area. The design proposal includes powerful lighting systems that will replicate daylight conditions and the most stringent safety protocols will be applied to ensure driver and spectator safety.

Grandstand seating and hospitality areas lining the track will be able to accommodate more than 80,000 spectators, while a permanent pit area with deluxe paddock facilities will be built adjacent to the existing Singapore Flyer complex.

It will be more than just a motor race, commented Singapores Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran. We envision it to be a national festival, and one that presents many opportunities for participation for everyone, both visitors and Singaporeans alike.

Singaporeans are excited about the race coming to Singapore and I share their enthusiasm. Singapore looks forward to welcoming the Formula One drivers, teams and fans to Singapore next year.

The Singapore Grand Prix will be managed by Singapore GP Pte Ltd, a newly incorporated race promotion company formed between Komoco Motors and regional events company Lushington Entertainments, via its parent company Reef Enterprises.

Heard talk of night races at the Melbourne GP, they Eccelstone was talking about making all of the Asia-Pacific GP's night races so that they are a better time for Europe. To be honest I don't know how I feel about it. Ok, 1 or 2 GP's a year would be ok, but making at least 1/4 of the championship into night races just ruins it a bit for me I think. I think they should be concentrating their efforts elsewhere.

Posted by stren on May-11-2007 13:49:

hah Nutter beat me by 0.965 sec. Damn you!

I'm super excited for a nighttime GP!

Posted by nchs09 on May-11-2007 13:57:

is singapore where they have the full moon parties? the race should be the same night as the full moon party

or maybe that is thailand?

anyhow i cant waiiiiiiiiiiiit for a night race, oh the glowing breaks will be a show all by themselves!

Posted by stren on May-11-2007 14:01:

looks spectacular, I almost wish it wasn't a nighttime race

true, that looks like an awsome race track... the bridge will def be very spicy! and that little round about

Posted by noikeee on May-11-2007 21:01:

Ferrari drivers seemed very confident after the last couple tests there at Barcelona, saying the new developments improved the car's pace a lot... but today it seems like it backfired. McLaren did faster top laptimes in both the practice sessions, while Ferrari are saying the track conditions completely changed from last week and they can't find a good setup.

Highlight of the weekend is probably tomorrow, with qualifying. I predict the race is going to be awfully boring, and that horrible butchering of the last 2 corners into a new chicane won't improve overtaking.

The Singapore plans for next year look really nice.

yeapers. If they were like over 90 degrees turns, it might have helped, but here they don't slow down enough, and there isn't that much space for overtaking. I'm guessing the main priority was increasing the safety.

Posted by noikeee on May-11-2007 21:30:

Yeah, but the problem is also that the first corner after the start/finish straight is fairly fast, it's taken in 3rd gear or something. Unfortunately the only way you can get a decent amount of overtaking in current F1 cars is: slow section of corners -> long straight -> wide hairpin.

Posted by stren on May-11-2007 21:55:

the only overtaking takes place in the pit lanes nowadays, and at the start

Posted by pmoisse on May-12-2007 09:10:

Singapore night race looks pretty cool, hopefully they don't shit the bed in it's execution.

I think it should remain as the only one though, otherwise it's like a good SNL skit gone on too long. Too gimmicky.

Part of me thinks that even this is reaching, trying to do something wacky to increase interest. I think they should make the racing action-packed again...that might be a good start (I still say fewer winglets, but with slicks and ground-effect tunnels ftw!).

But hey, I'm hooked on this shit so I'll keep watching for sure lol

As for tomorrow's race, should be a good one.

Could Hamilton score a win?!?!

Posted by Quantized on May-12-2007 16:36:

Yeh at first when i heard about the night race i was like WOW, but then after watching that vid we'll all just be watching cars go round and round the circuit with no overtaking hence a shit race, just aesthetically pleasing.

No idea who's gonna win tomorrows race, could be any of the front 4. BMW also look ready for a solid performance.

I'm surprised Jarno Trulli is so high, Robert has to watch out for him

Posted by Trance Nutter on May-13-2007 03:53:

I'm tipping Alfonso

Posted by pmoisse on May-13-2007 14:40:

Decent race.

The middle was boring except for the few retirements and the Honduhs tripping over eachother.

Great result for Sato. I wonder if Feces will get blasted by Flaviou again for not being able to catch him? The guys were on the radio several times telling him to go faster.

Great result for DC too!!

Getting into the meat of the season, the championship is looking like it will go down to the wire.

Posted by stren on May-13-2007 16:42:

It was exciting at the begining, with all those retirements ( too bad not because of overtaking). The rest was pretty much boring.

A solid effort from my boy Kubica, too bad Nick didn't finish (it was a reverse situation from Australia's GP, where Robert had a gearbox problem). And what was up with that front wheel pit stop fiasco

Nice Flame show from Massa

Great job done by Coulthard
