so you're telling me that if you put together a bracket matchup, and have an NL vs AL type of bracketology, with [Boston, New York Yankees, Cleveland, Detroit, Seattle, and Anaheim] vs [New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks], the NL would win that one? that's kinda iffy? the NL has some good teams, but the AL would stomp them.

where did I say that the NL is better than the AL???

I just said the teams in the NL are much more equal and so the pennant races are much closer and more interesting.

You gave the political answer and said the NL is more competitive more or less.... but guess what, WHO CARES!!! Because that just means they ALL SUCK, like I AM SAYING!!!

they can be BAD and competitive at the same time, which equals to.... THEY SUCK HARDCORE compared to the AL, like I AM SAYING.... again, NL IS A CRAPSHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AL all the way!!!

yeah let's talk about that again when the Mets defeated the Tigers in the World Series.

Who won the WS last year?

You have to play the games. You can't just say that this team is better than that.

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Jul-30-2007 18:00:

imo, lately the past couple of years the winners of the World Series or other major championship isn't based on "the best" team, but who is the hot team heading into the championship series. The Cardinals were clearly riding the hot train, and the year before the White Sox were too.

Posted by partyhopper on Aug-06-2007 03:44:

Barry Bonds tied Hank Aaron, A-Rod became the youngest to hit 500 home runs, and Tom Glavine got his 300th win.
Too bad it wasn't on the same night, which there was the chance for last week, but all in one weekend isn't too shabby.

Yankees are now a half game back! Feel it funk it amps in the trunk it.

Wild card is ours. Still a shot for the division, you never know.

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Aug-06-2007 05:48:

Out of all the accomplishments that have been made the past couple of days : Bonds 755, A-Rod's 500, and Glavine's 300 (tonight), Glavine's 300 is the most significant out of the 3. I don't think any modern day pitcher at the moment will reach 300 for a very long time.

Posted by Rockabye on Aug-06-2007 20:58:

Congratz to Glavine

Posted by partyhopper on Aug-08-2007 04:04:

Barroid has finally broken the record
And now all the hoopla will soon stop sounding like a broken record

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Aug-09-2007 18:34:

get this fact. if Clemens can go for another year with the Yankees or another team, he has a good chance of passing Warren Spahn, and be the #1 leader in number of wins in "modern day baseball", not "all of baseball". Clemens has 352 and Spahn has 363.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-10-2007 06:32:

Clemens gets a fucking 5 game suspension for beaning Alex Rios in Tuesday's Yankees-Jays game (which I was at and very intoxicated!) That is such bullshit! First the Jays throw BEHIND Arod on Monday, then he gets fucking beaned right on his left knee (that location could cause serious injury) but Towers wasn't even WARNED, much less ejected or suspended.

And then I had to listen to those fucking HOMER Jays baseball commentators yack on and on during Wednesday's game about how the Yankees are favoured around the league and that they are always given the call when they're at home. What fucking horseshit! Honestly, I support Canada having an MLB team (even though I hate the Jays) but I cannot fucking stand the Canadian sports media a lot of the times, especially those who cover Toronto teams.

And as much as I love baseball, it can be a pussy sport at times. If someone throws at your player, you should be able to throw back at someone without getting a ridiculous suspension like Clemens was hit with today.

I have watched at least 50-60 Yankee games on TV consistently since the 2003 season when Rogers cable here offered the baseball package. I have never, ever heard any announcer from any team other than Toronto insinuate that the Yankees are favoured by both umpires and MLB itself...not even from the Red Sox NESN commentators (who actually call very good games are NOT biased homers).

Anybody have an opinion on this matter? I was fucking fuming at the TV yesterday when I heard those two fucks go on about it.

Question Smitty: you live in Canada. you live in Ontario right? why the hell are you a Yankees Fan?

you live in Germany. Why do you even watch baseball, much less cheer for the Mets?

There are Yankee fans everywhere in the United States and Canada. You aren't forced to cheer for you the team that is closest to you geographically. Besides, when my grandfather emigrated from England to Canada 50 years ago, he rooted for the Yankees (for obvious reasons at the time). That was passed on to my dad and I grew up watching them on TV and in Detroit, New York and Toronto as a kid.

You know...not everybody in Ontario cheers for the Leafs in hockey either. There are endless Montreal, Red Wings, Rangers, Bruins, Oilers fans here. In fact, many Ontarians CANNOT STAND the Toronto Maple Leafs. The same applies to Baseball. It's kind of like a German or a Dutchman being a Manchester United fan...in other words, it happens all the time.

Actually, there are Yankees fans over the world. I've seen Yankees hats in England. I've also seen one sports store in Dublin on Henry street sell a vast array of Yankees gear. In Taipei, I saw Chien Ming Wang's face EVERYWHERE. Tokyo has a number of Yankee fans because of the Yomiuri Giants/Hideki Matsui connection.

Just what I've personally observed

well the "NY" itself is pretty much its own brand now so I think a lot of people outside North America who wear Yankees stuff might just be wearing it for that purpose. But there are very serious Yankee fans all over North America. Everywhere the Yankees go their fans come out in droves. It's the same with the Red Sox, but to a lesser degree.

I just find it annoying when people say I can't (or shouldn't) be a Yankees fan since I"m from Canada...as if I'm obligated to cheer for the Blue Jays.

In Japan and Taiwan, they take their baseball seriously.

It was pretty easy to catch a Yankees game in Taiwan.

As for Japan, A-Rod hitting home run #500 made the front pages of the papers (even on the same day Bonds tied Aaron).

edit: probably the sports section, not the overall front pages of the paper

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-10-2007 10:24:

oh yeah for sure Asia and definitely the Latin countries. I did my undergrad with a Cuban girl who had emigrated to Canada with her family and they were die hard NY fans. I watched one of the 2003 World Series games with them and I was pleasantly suprised at how knowledgeable and passionate they were about the game and the Yankees.

I meant Europe moreso regarding the brand issue. I spent a lot of time in England and most people there, while they might wear Yankees stuff, couldn't give a shit about the game.

major sports are moving further and further away from the regional dominance of franchise allegiances. Fewer & fewer people are actually going to games (percentage-wise), and while sports are becoming more popular as a whole, the specific markets, teams, & even leagues are becoming less and less relevant in the overall culture, at least in the US. TV certainly has a LOT to do with it. The mere existence of cable television has introduced a whole bunch of new factors to sports, most important of all is the fact that your options are no longer limited to watching (or even earlier, listening to) the local team's games or buying a ticket.

It's also something I can definitely identify with, personally. When I was growing up, baseball was one of my favorite sports, & pitching was my primary interest. While I still loved the White Sox and watched almost every game, I always sat down for a lot of Braves games on TBS to see Glavine, Avery, Smoltz, & Maddux [my favorite pitcher of all time]. 50 years ago, I might have heard or read about that rotation, but I wouldn't have seen them play more than a couple times in my life, let alone dozens of times per season. Whether this is all for better or worse, though, is something worth an interesting debate.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-10-2007 10:33:

yes I can see your point about how it may or may not be a good thing for the sport for local support to be diverted to other markets, but at the same time, there is always going to be a strong local market.

Take my dad for example. He was already 25 by the time the Jays came into the league in 77. Most people in our area of Ontario were either Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox or Expos fans before the Jays came into the AL. I was molded into a Yankees fan during the 80s when they weren't all that good. I was in high school by the time they won the World Series in 96 and I had seen them live twice every year since I was 7. I go to Yankee Stadium every 3 or 4 years and will be going again next year for the last season at Yankee Stadium. I feel just as much as part of the Yankee fan family as any New Yorker does.

Most of my friends, however (late 70s and 80s generation), if they give a fuck about baseball at all, tend to be all Jays fans. I also know many Tigers fans too.

Posted by shaw on Aug-10-2007 10:47:

those are specific examples. that means nothing.

Yeah most europeans doesn't wear Yankees clothes because they liek the Team but because of the NY on the Cap or because 50 cent wears that stuff

It was the same in the early 90's when a lot of people had 49ers oder Raiders clothes but haven't watched a single NFL game in their life.

Because Doug Heffernan is a Mets fan.

No seriously. I've first watched baseball without having a team and picked the Mets than because I've liked the style of their play with Reyes, Wright and others. And of course because I don't like the Yankees.

And I had to pick a team from the east coast, because games from western team start at 4 in the morning.

And of course I had to pick a team from the NL because the DH Rule is gay.
