It's easy to bang on a saw-wave, but alot of basslines are BOTH the pattern fitting the sound, or vise versa.
Alot of bassline patch problems I've had are because people can't seem to get past the "Kick - Bass - Kick - Bass... " blah....
Now I've never used Reason, but I reckon that bold experimentation is both regards can help alot.

The subtracktor is good for bassline. Open one up, and bring down its ocatvve to 2. Lower the freq filter so it is not as harmonicy. Add a scream and set it to tube and turn down the damgae a bit, then boost the lows.
Should be a good bassline, and maybe ad a touch of ping pong delay. Make sure the delay is eqed.

ive got 2 basslines that might have been posted allready;
Kick:
|X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |
Bass:
| |y|Y|y| |y|Y|y| |Y|y|y| |y|Y|y|
Kick:
|X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |
Bass:
| |y|y|Y| |y|y|Y| |y|Y|y| |y|y|Y|
And this ones for psy:
Kick:
|X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |X| | | |
Bass:
| |y|y|y| |y|y|y| |y|y|y| |y|y|Y| |y|y|y| |y|y|y| |y|y|y| |y|Y|Y|
In the normal basslines big Y stands for one octave higher and a lil y means ofc a lower octave than big y's and presumably the original key for your bassline.
in the psy ones big y's is an increase of just a pair of semitones, just enough so it sounds good.
these basslines are mediocre and just variations of the normal rolling basslines of both trance and psy.
After spending part of the day taking the tips posted on here ive finally come up with something im happy with - in reason.
Unknown Bassline
The tunes doing well as a whole now so should be ready soon - stay tuned! :P
Hi guys,
I'm completely new here to production section, and i don't know thing about production.
However, i've been reading a few threads here and there, and I just thought there's one trance track which really brings home to me the importance of the variation that basslines give to music.
Paco Lessoto - Le Mirage.
I dunno if u people have heard that track. I love it. BUt after reading this thread, i realised that the only thing that gives that track substance is it's bassline. If that was more static, the track would be the same thing over and over really and wouldn't give me the feel it does. (i still love the track).
ANyways, just letting you guys know.
Keep up the awesome work, and keep sharing with one another.
I never really seem to have any trouble coming up with basslines.
here's something I do when I really REALLY can't think of an original line:
i make a complicated breakbeat, then I remove the kick and the clap, and all instruments that remain, I just put on the C4 note, I copy the notes and past them in a bass synth
..
try things you'd think they really shit.. they might even sound nice after a bit of tweaking.. take this for example..
K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K---]:......(kick)
-*-*--888--*--*00-888-*--*-*--00]:......(bass)
*= 1/4 bassnote
00=2/4 bassnote
888= 3/4 bassnote
and put a friggin lot of distortion on them
!! and a phaz0r on the mids and highs.. and nah nevermind just dont do tht
anyway you should also experiment with changes in drive with longer and shorter bassnotes..!
hope I could add something to this thread
can u guys post sample clips on the sequences?
Bassline 1
Bassline 2
Psy Bassline
i know they sound like shit but they still illustrate the sequence...
well ofcourse you could also play with the attack and decay/sustain of the bass
gives a certain drive.
For example here is the bassline I used in my track Flat & Simple.
K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K---...(kick)
-B-bbbB---BB-B-B--bbb-BB--B--B-B...(bass)
B= 1/4 note
bbb= 3/4 note
bassline flat & simple
hope this drives you all nuts
I added a ping delay to the bass line to come up with something cool (at least I think it's cool :toocool
. The ping delay on the bass was tempo sync'd (left channel at 1/2 and right channel at 1/4 with some feedback).
K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K--- (Kick)
-b----b----b---B-b----b----b---B (Bass)
The bass line is migrating from left to right getting further and further away from the kick (for the first three measures).
It sounds horrible with out the ping delay
Here is it's sample:

Edit: I just wanted to say this is one awesome forum and thread for that matter!
Love ping delays... ;P
dj palm i liked your first bassline, that would definatly make me dance
.
percs are fat but the snare is weird to me but what the hell, this is a bass thread ;P.
i dont really like your second bassline, dunno why.
Anyone heard Steve Angello - The End? That bassline is wicked:

Entire tune is awesome too, prolly my favourite. A real masterpiece, and a guide to how a track is supposed to sound.
Another favourite bass line is Fedde Le Grand - Las Vegas...
Anyways. Creating a trance running bassline is the easiest thing in the world imo. A layer of basslines is also easy. All you really do is something like this (don't think; do):
K---S---K---S---K---S---K---S---
--xx--xx--xx--xx--xx--xx--xx-xxx
-X-X--XX-X-X-XXX-X-X--XX-X-X-XXX
--Z--Z-Z--Z--Z-Z--Z--Z-Z--Z-Z---
x is the sub bass.
X is the mid bass.
Z is a mid bass too, but with some stereodelay on it.
I just made this up. Could someone try out if it's any good?
second sun and gabriel and dresden have their thing with snares and high hats

(Nah.. I wont let this thread die....)
How about basslines like the one in Nic Chagall - What You Need (Hard Dub Reedit). That truly is some super duper hardcore asskicking motherfucking wicked bassline!! If you haven't heard that track, for the sake of heaven and earth... you better go get it right away!!
Question is... How do you create such an ingenious sick bassline?
Does anyone on this forum have a clue?
Say what? U cant just make a random melody to copy that bass........ Its not just playing around with the arp and adding some sidechain and ur done.......... Cant you hear that extremely phat sound he gets? What kinda waves? What would the bass pattern look like in a piano roll?
Nic Chagall - What You Need (Hard Dub Reedit) SAMPLE
Now THAT... is what i call bass.
I don't think it's that great to be honest.
Aalto - 5 (Original Mix), now that's a cool bassline in my opinion.
Sample here:

Nic Chagall is actually Claus Terhoeven from Cosmic Gate going solo, and What You Need is definately a massive track... If you disagree, please go fornicate youreself with an iron stick or sumthin
I wish I were able to recreate that bass sound... Pleeeeease... Im on a dedicated trance forum...
Any geeks have any ideas? How to go about it??
Oh my god, did people actually think kbkb was the ONLY bassline? god damn! And i thought i was an amature.
