I used to be rather angry at ignorant people who called Muslims terrorists and psychopaths, but on Sunday night I watched a documentary on Salman Rushdie and The Satanic Verses which has certainly changed my view of Islam somewhat (not that I now believe all Muslims are this way).
It was rather eye-opening to see thousands of seemingly innocuous citizens rallying for the death of someone who authored things that disagree with their beliefs. It's a pretty disgusting religion that condones that sort of behaviour. This was not limited to radical or extremist groups, either. Thousands of Muslims in Britain reacted the same way, and Iran's diplomat participated in a chilling interview with the BBC where he effectively called for Rushdie to be executed, all the while with a huge smile on his face.

Originally posted by pkcRAISTLIN Yeah, I think its rather obvious that not all (or even most) muslims are terrorists. From my perspective its just damned hard to get someone to blow themselves up at a school without manipulating their religious fervour. Nobody ever blew themselves up in the name of the spaghetti monster. saw that was on, sorry i missed it.
These people are such pricks.
They always hand out flyers to watch dianetics for free. (this is how the reel you in. that and the free stress test)
I always get into arguements and I tell him "Scientology kills" and he screams at me. lol.
I do love religion.... it fascinates me. The peaceful ones which I am not ready to convert to. haha.

A month or two ago, my friend was doing some photography in Clearwater, FL and I guess didn't realize he was in the scientology complex. Some security guards came out, busted up his camera and said they'd ruin his life if he pressed charges. True story.

Originally posted by Domesticated My point was that many ignorant Westerners see Muslims as backward and savage religious zealots, not necessarily actual terrorists.

did u guys ever see some bbc special where some guy went to clearwater to do research on Scientology?
the ppl were stalking the guy and found which hotel he was staying at and kind of turned the interview around.
Where I used to work in Fl (coral cables) there was a CoS right infront of my job. Uber creepy. Then close to my dads house was the temple for hare krishnas and my dad knows i've been fascinated with them since I was young hhaha. I think my dad wanted to lose me to a cult
it was nuts! (it's all like a 5 mins driving distance from each other)

Originally posted by astroboy Nationalist pride will do just as well. Kamikaze pilots were happy to die for their country without religion being involved. More recently the LTTE, a secular organisation, popularised suicide terrorism before the Islamist groups took it up.

Originally posted by pkcRAISTLIN i definitely agree with you re nationalism, but kamikaze pilots were fighting a war and they targeted military assets. they didn't crash their planes into markets or schools or prayer houses. Islamists routinely blow up targets even though they are not embroiled in any meaningful conflict, much less a world war. I certainly think though that nationalism comes a close second to religion in terms of its rallying might and self-evident righteousness.
I can understand suicide attacks against a genuine threat (i.e the World Trade Centre as retaliation for Afghanistan), but what I cannot understand is thousands of law-abiding, conservative Muslims calling for a man's death because he publishes material that is derogatory to their faith.
Someone said something nasty about you. Forget about it and move on. If every person or group of persons responded with violence each and every time they were criticised, the world would be a very empty place.

Ah, fuck, I'm an ignoramus. Afghanistan's invasion was in response to 9/11, not the other way around.
I don't have time to discuss this now, but I shall return some time in the next few days.
