DJs are more like the cover bands out there and I don't know many cover bands that sell out a club like Guv. If anything....we should be praising the producers more and the DJs less. |

I disagree that bands and DJs are inherently different when it comes to people's motivations to go hear them. So do the 5000 people who go to guvernment every weekend too, and the 40,000 at each of the many big events across Europe every year.
Clearly people put just as much emphasis on DJs as they do on bands, are you actually arguing that?

Or, simply accept the fact that the band-scene and the EDM-scene are completely different when it comes to the creation, production and performance of music.
Producers generally produce tracks so that other DJ's can play out their music to clubs, and be heard by a pretty wide audience. They are not producing music to be "performed live"
Bands produce music for themselves to be performed live. They are not specifically writing tracks with the expectation / hope that another band will play it as a cover.
*(insert obligatory exceptions to the rule such as Live PAs and EDM/band cross-over acts/etc/etc)
When some band writes a song, they dont think "Geeze, I hope the rolling stones will play this at their next show!" when they submit it to a label. But, when joe-producer makes a track and submits it t M_NUS, they are probably crossing their fingers that their track will be dropped and supported by Hawtin & Co.
Sort of like composer writing music to be performed by a maestro conducting an orchestra. A producer produces tracks to be played by a DJ to be mixed in with other tracks for an audience.
The skills required to build a song vs the skills required to build a set are different. Instead of arranging the elements for a 6-8 minute song, your arranging a number of songs to build a larger work. Just because you are good at one, does not mean you will be good at the other - you have many producers that /suck/ at DJing, and you have a number of DJs that might suck at producing. Now and then, you get some that are great at both.
Producers do deserve more credit for the work that they do, but trying to equate a DJ to a cover-band is even a bigger stretch then trying to compare them to a maestro of an orchestra like I did above :P
