Just a few random names, some of this may not really be the specific type of metal people think of, but close enough.

edit: damn SMC beat me to a few. I haven't listened to the new Mastodon album yet, how is it?

I'm surprised dude. I didn't know any other Atlantans listened to good metal. Opeth is a personal favorite of mine. BTBAM are very good also.

The new Converge is pretty awesome.

I love Opeth. I don't know how someone could listen to any of this other stuff for more than 5 minutes, though.

Nice to see you've done your research.

For someone who does good mixes and otherwise seems quite reasonable I'm suprised to see mr mystery likes children of bodom.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

They're not really my faves, actually - I'm more into the progressive/melodic side of metal. Just gotta show support to the locals.

This thread needs more Agalloch. Going to see them in Portland in October. Can't wait. Any fans of post rock and melodic black/death metal should check them out.

Yep, love agalloch.

Excellent track that's well complemented here by an equally excellent video:

Try these guys. They're similar, but better imo.

I'm pretty familiar with the Finnish scene.

Yes, I'm sure.

I can tolerate some of it when it's offset by sections or entire tracks of less frenetic stuff. the reason I love them is that the rhythmic & harmonic components of almost everything they make are phenomenal. I couldn't care less about how loud they can get.

...not to mention incredible musicianship (see: not just being able to play really really fast)

I've been listening to Metal music for a long time now. And yes Opeth is good music, even if you don't like the growls in it there's still songs of theirs with only clean vocals.
I have Deliverance from Opeth but would like to get My Arms, Your hearse sometime. I mostly listen to Death, Black, thrash, Nu, Groove, and some Doom and Power Metal from Metal music.

The grandfathers of metal showing the youngsters how it's supposed to be done:

Get 'My Arms, Your Hearse', it's fantastic. And it's a perfect starting point to then go on and listen to 'Still Life' and 'Blackwater Park', chronologically.

Personally I found "Blackwater Park" to be a perfect starting point. However, I was just getting into metal at that point and production value played a big role for me.

Sure, "Blackwater Park" would be perfect as an introduction, Steven Wilson did such a great job with the production. However i think "My Arms, Your Hearse" sounds very good as well, it's certainly more rudimentary than their post-00 releases, but it's a big improvement over the first two albums. It sounds very round, and atmospheric, and the material on it is pure class.
