bipolar disorder has been related to creativity for quite some time now, so yes, if there were any ARTists 2000 years ago, chances are some of them were bipolar.

i do strongly believe that so many mental illnesses (if not all) are caused by things the mother did while pregnant and also from a bad upbringing. i think it would be hard to prove this though because i doubt many women would want to admit their bad habits while pregnant. i mean think of all the women who eat garbage or still smoke or something and don't take the proper vitamins while pregnant, etc... or imagine women who got pregnant and didn't know for the first month and in that month, she dropped e or did a bunch of coke or something and decided to keep the baby.

in fact, the whole fucking problem with the world is bad parenting lol

WOW, THE LEVEL OF FUCKING IGNORANCE.

its genetic. The documentary Lira posted talks about how its a result of a combination of genes, and if you have it it is almost certain that it is present in your family. Stephen Fry contributes his DNA for the research in it. Even though MRI scans cannot determine the difference between a normal brain and an afflicted one, there is overwhelming evidence to show repeated patterns of behavior similar to ancestors.

I have read studies that indicate there is a 1/4 chance of passing on the gene if you have it... regardless of what the mother is consuming during pregnancy.

"Even though MRI scans cannot determine the difference between a normal brain and an afflicted one,"

maybe because it might not be a mental disorder. if both brains have no differences, than, where is the proof that "bi-polar" disorder is a mental illness?

Maybe now is a good time to tell him over half of them don't post here any more, or would it spoil the fun?

Shoosh, don't say anything now, I think he's on a roll.

Right... I understand. More speficically, I was referring to people who's mental disorders were manifested because of their drug use/abuse when they had no previous history of mental illness... not a substance abuse disorder.

Man, those diagnoses are getting more and more detailed and complex with each DSM revision, aren't they?

drugs and alcohol and even caffeine can induce a psychosis without the person actually having a "mental illness", they just experience some of the symptoms of a mental illness during that psychosis, without them actually being "mentally ill"

Bipolar disorder is no joke, I've seen a grown man in the middle of work break down into tears out of the blue at my old job. When I asked my supervisor what was up, he simply replied that he's been struggling with his bipolar disorder befor I even started working there. Science got it down to a chemical inbalance and fucked up electrical currents not passing through in a "normal" way through stem cells. I can't imagine the way it really is to live with it.

everyone keeps talking about "chemical imbalance" but if you go ask a doctor, nurse, specialist, this question:

"can you please prove to me what exactly is a chemical imbalance?"

they will all respond the same way: "no, i cant prove a chemical imbalance exists"

there are a lot of mis-representations when it comes to "mental illness" espescially bi-polar disorder.

i see why people left the forum now.

no one is willing to step up and have a mature conversation, when a mature reply or thread is posted.

everyone feels the need to make fun of everything just to make themselves feel better and feed their ego, because in reality they consider themselves worthless and are insecure in their lack of abilities.

what a shame. scared to be yourselves, you hide every last detail, with very bad jokes. try and have some courage y'all.

This thread was made in 2009. Someone bumped it today, and you spent hours replying to people that said what they said 3 years ago.

Don't be getting all upitty with us because you did that, it's no one's fault but your own.

May I ask, have you been formally diagnosed with bi-polar disorder? If not, what is your intense interest in this 3-year-old thread?

if you havent noticed, i dont really care how old threads are... i respond to new and bumped old threads. (isnt that the point of this forum? to post replies?)

i didnt consider it a waste of time...

intense interest? it took me about 10 minutes to go through the thread and respond...

ps. mattsanity re-opened the thread, maybe he actually does need help.anyone ever think of that?

Posted by Sushipunk on Jan-09-2012 09:56:

Relax, mate.

Nearly everyone that posts here regularly knows what Mattinsanity is like.

No, he's not in any need of help.

Fair go, if you want to reply to 3-year-old posts, that's your business. You won't be getting many replies from those people though. That's another "point of the forum" as you say. It's referred to as "paying attention".

Uh, what?

Mental illnesses can absolutely be linked to chemical alterations in the brain. It isn't the ONLY factor, but imbalances (of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine) have certainly been proven to exist in those with mental illnesses.

Et tu, Zid?

Hint, start looking inward, and you'll see that you're exhibiting myriad shades of the exact same behaviour you're pointing out in others.

We all do it, but your seeming lack of awareness of your own habit is pretty sad.

Re: OP

Bi-polar disorder is especially awful combined with schizophrenia, formal thought disorder, or even just schizotype mental illnesses.

Not knowing whether the things you see, hear, or feel are actually happening just adds to the frustration of bi-polar disorder. I've spent the beginning of this year apologizing to close friends, colleagues, and especially to my roommate for previous violent episodes, and abberant behavior.

Surprisingly, what's helped the most has been long acting ADHD meds my psychiatrist prescribed me a couple month's ago, which gradually boost norepinephrine levels. I've tried for so many years to just get things under control by will power alone, but sometimes it's simply brain chemistry.

Can't say this is something I'd start a thread about, mainly because most people simply can't understand how debilitating these kinds of things are. It feels great to finally be focused, now that the paranoia, hallucinations, and mood swings have begun to subside. Even my HPPD has finally subsided after several years.

Most likely if you're bi-polar, and being active (i.e. regular exercise) isn't helping, you probably just need to find the right meds to balance you out. I know people well into their 40's and 50's whose lives have been completely ruined by bi-polar disorder, and related mental illnesses. It's tough to maintain a positive attitude at times, but it's possible to pull through okay with the right combination of treatments.

I would almost guarantee he has one or more personality disorders. Too much lucidity for a manic phase.

Two things:

1) You are arguing with a medical professional.

2) Theories proven correct are called theorems. The earth being round was once just a theory and has since been proven correct; hence it is a theorem.

this thread makes it look like half of TA is mentally ill

yes it does kind of surprise me

Welp, you don't need to be a scientist to know for a fact that zidumare is an idiot.
