There will also be an express bus (the x81) going to the island from Queens. You could drive into Queens, park and take the bus.

No, you can drive to Queens then take the Robert F. Kennedy bridge over to the Island. You can also cross this bridge on foot during the hours of (6am - 9pm) from Manahattan, Queens, and the Bronx or you can take the Water Taxi from Hunts Point in Queens.

It's hunters point & it's right next to water taxi beach.

Merge onto GRAND CENTRAL PKWY W toward TRIBORO BR.
Keep Left on the GCP
GRAND CENTRAL PKWY W becomes I-278 E.
Take the exit toward MANHATTAN/RANDALLS-WARDS IS/DOWNING STADIUM.
Stay STRAIGHT to go onto ROBERT F KENNEDY BRIDGE (Portions toll).
Take the ramp toward RANDALLS IS/DOWNING STADIUM/WARDS IS.
Stay STRAIGHT to go onto RANDALLS IS.
