...and read this. It's a good overview of subtractive synth programming....

Stephen, I'm not sure what you mean about "creating a stereo field" in the first place. Do you mean programming the two synths slightly differently and then panning them? It seems kind of pointless just to have both of them programmed the same, because as echosystem already pointed out if you're going to do that you will either have phase issues or different notes playing out each side, neither of which will sound very good.

I guess you could try detuning them from each other or something. You wouldn't even have to pan both of them completely left and completely right, you could pan one half left and the other half right and have them mix in the middle. It might sound nice but it still won't be a "twelve voice stereo synth," just two six voice mono synths.

I think what he's trying to achieve is a panned out unison effect where each synth is playing the same patch (almost) but just slightly differently. This might help him achieve a wider effect, like the unison in most soft synths.

personally I think chorus/ensemble effects are great

We all know what he was trying to achieve, it just doesn't make any sense. This is no different from setting up two IN channels on your DAW, then detuning/panning/whatever. He would be buying a second synth for absolutely no reason. Also, only detuning 2 sources would sound pretty piss weak anyway. You really need 4+ to get anything decent sounding out of unison.

Chaining two Matrixs together is a good idea, because you get a sweet 12 voice mono synth pretty cheap. However, all this half-baked stereo shit is moronic and he clearly has no idea how stereo actually works.

wrong. i know exactly how it works. the nerd in you just wants to argue (it seems it is 75% of what you do here) because you technically are correct but you know damn well what i'm trying to achieve. i find it funny you rag chaining mx1000's hard and then turn around and say its a good idea. of course you'll predictably say its not the synths but my lack of understanding of stereo and such. yada yada yada. All you want to do is argue. You keep typing, I'll keep buying, and I'll have some really nice analog clips for you where you, nor anyone else, will be able to tell if the sound is mono or not from just listening. You would have everybody here believe it's impossible to take a mono source and turn it into a stereo sound and that's bullshit.

you seem to like to talk a lot but i am having a hard time finding any work done by you. would really like to hear something produced by you so I can get an idea of how good my productions will be when my synth manuals become my bible.

I know what you are TRYING to achieve. Emphasis on trying.

I never said there was anything wrong with chaining two Matrixs together, I just said YOUR idea is moronic. It still is.

Please explain to me how you think stereo works. I really want to hear this.

PS. I argue because I'm a good person and I'm trying to save you from your own stupidity... And also just because it's hilarious lolol.

As stated, predictable. Trash the idea then talk about how two mx 1000's chained would be nice. Try to blame it on the programmer because he isn't an eloquent speaking nerd even though you know exactly what his goal is.

How does stereo work? You may not like this definition but stereo is just a dynamic sound that is not confined to one channel. It's effect can be simulated using countless methods.

Still wanting to hear some work of yours.

"Show me your productions then" is the worst fucking comeback that has ever been used on a production forum and the sad thing is that it's so common. Just because someone may not be musically gifted doesn't mean they don't know the theory like the back of their hand.

All you do with a stupid line like that is force the argument into a dead end and once again initiate an ego war

It only bothers those who have no work to show.

Yea I am, just depends when. I really want an Andromeda as my main but that's 3x the price so do I save up and get the A6 or just get the Nord 2x (rack most likely) and then the A6 after?
Then there is also the issue of a second hand Virus C popping up. If it did, then I might grab it (in fact I almost bought one last month but the guy sold it to one of his mates).

That about covers the 3 synths that I want for various reasons. Software like the Rob Papen synths and a few others complete the package.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Nov-30-2009 12:48:

imo decide for one of them, no one needs three VAs.

Posted by Storyteller on Nov-30-2009 13:26:

I disagree. I've got the Virus KC and the Nord 2 and think they're quite different. Thus having multiple VA's would be benificial. I prefer the Nord. Less complicated and no menu's to scroll through , and it's sound of course.

no interest in a Virus TI? I see you are looking at a Nord 2x Rack or maybe a Virus C. If you have never used a TI, I highly suggest checking one out at least. It will improve the pace at which you work drastically.

Posted by Storyteller on Nov-30-2009 13:31:

Yes I would think so too. Unfortunately the TI still does not work properly in my preferred host and I'm still regularly come by a fair amount of complaints. I don't want it because of that.

Posted by DjStephenWiley on Nov-30-2009 13:34:

ah, that sux. i'm actually running the beta OS on my TI and havn't come across a single problem or crashed yet. i use ableton tho not fls

Posted by Fledz on Dec-01-2009 00:57:

Oh no no, I'm definitely interested in the TI. The thing is the price. I can find a used Virus C for relatively cheap, not so with the TI. Plus it's easy to upgrade later on and the TI is firmly the last one on that list of three with the Andromeda edging out the Nord.

I never wanted to hit a fat UPS man in the face as much as I did today. I went in there already angry, but completely under control (cause yeh its been sitting there since last wed but I understand its not their fault, I mean I'm sure the entire UPS deserves a nice 4 day vacation for turkey day when I dont get a single fvckn day off).

Ahem, but this is how the conversation basically went.

UPS: "Hi how can I help you today?"
Me: "Yes, hi, my package has been on your trucks since last wednesday I'm wondering if it went out for delivery or if its here now I can just pick it up?" (I'm assuming its out on delivery so I'm not expecting it, I really went there to put a hold on it)
UPS: "Ok sure thing, name etc etc.."
Me: Waiting

UPS: "Can I have the address please"? (Im trying to remember as good as I can how everything was said)
Me: ****** (address)

UPS: "A PO BOX?"
Me: "Yes, a PO BOX".

UPS: "We dont ship to PO BOXES.."
ME: "Well apparently you do, because UPS delivered a box to my PO BOX 3 weeks ago, I still have the tracking in my email if you wanna see.."
UPS: "Well, we aren't suppose to.."
ME: "Really? So why do you still take packages addressed to PO BOXs if you're not suppose to be shipping them to PO BOXs (this is when that magic word money comes to play I guess)"
UPS: "Its just policy blah blah blah"
Me: (holding my breath)

*THIS IS WHEN THINGS GET BAD NOW*

UPS: "Ok well if it was addressed to a PO BOX that means it never left the facility (this is like hearing Angelina Jolie wants to blow me, basically meant that I didn't have to wait till tommorow to get it so I'm pumped)
Me: "Oh reallllyyyy? Awesome, so then I can pick it up now?"
UPS: "Uh hold on.. let me just see here (hes looking through the computer).

*waiting

UPS man now actually gets off his computer, and goes onto the one right next to him. I'm thinking "hmm... that seems strange".

UPS man looks up at me then looks back down.. now I'm getting shaded out (I get shaded out real easy by people when theyre behavoir seems to change for no reason).
But this guys behavoir changed I guess cause he became nervous for what came out of his mouth next.

UPS: "Im sorry.. well it looks here like it DID go out for delivery (start crying on the inside lol).. which is not typical"
Me: (trying not to strangle UPS man)
Me: "So.. that means I can't get it today then?"
UPS: "The driver won't be back till later tonight, it depends on what time he gets back really.." (his nice way of saying no is what I hear)

Long story short I give him my number and they say they'll call when it comes back. I walk out cursing under my breath. Get a call at 6:15pm, I'm in class. It was the UPS, they closed at 7 so I basically had 45mins to pick it up, was not happening.

Oh well, at least tommorow I know for a fact I'll have it. I put a hold on it so it stays at UPS now and they can't move it for 5 days. But g/damn all I want is my fvckn Virus. I was so close to actually yelling it as I was walking out "GIVE ME MY FVCKN VIRUS!!! ALL I WANT IS MY G/DAMN VIRUS!!!!!!!!" but a virus isn't gonna do much good when I'm in jail so yeh.. thats my awesome story today..

When did the Andromeda become a virtual analog?

Posted by RichieV on Dec-01-2009 17:30:

what exactly do you need then? You can technically make music with a stick and tin can. Your reductionist logic is silly.

I have to disagree. Especially when the 3 mentioned all have quite different characters and operation. Plus, they're not all pure subtractive synths.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Dec-01-2009 17:35:

People also buy new gear because they enjoy it and think it will add to the fun of production, not just because they "need" it. ;-)
