My rule of thumb is I have to take some sort of 'action' at that venue. Engage it in some way. You'd be surprised at how many places one can check into if they exist in foursquare or if you register them.

How do we find you?

Foursquare: A "fun game" for the masses creating huge data mining opportunities for marketing professionals to salivate and lick their greedy lips at.

The price of your personal information? $125 million dollars

Have fun everyone!

I think the implications of foursquare to retail marketers is mind boggeling. Its examining consumer behaviour at a whole new level.

And I really don't have any issues sharing my 'personal information'

It will be interseting to see what Facebook and Twitter develop and the affects it will have on Foursquare. While Foursquare has the first movers advantage, the number of users facebook/twitter have could wipe foursquare right off the board.

Maybe you don't have a problem with it, but I think too few people fully realize what kind of personal information they're giving away.

I was worried about that too, there are a few things i'm thinking about for data use at DEMF (ie. foursquare, twitter, facebook pic uploads, msn etc)

1) Hopefully there will be some sort of wifi to grab in Hart Plaza, all that technology, hotels everywhere, businesses etc.., must be something!

2) Turn off roaming, and force your network to be Rogers (Or Telus/Bell whatever) so that your phone doesn't try to jump on the stronger US networks, since DEMF is right on the river, you should be able to catch Voice/Data signal from Windsor and you're golden!

3) Call up your carrier later and say "I was in Windsor all weekend visiting friends, now my bill is $$$$$$, and I don't recall, or paid attention to what it said on my phone..." usually they will reverse the charges since it's a very common occurence for CAN/US border cities, especially with Windsor/Detroit. My worry is that they will look closer and see alot of 313 Detroit calls...

I checked them out, pretty pricey for what you get, good to limited use, but nothign special.

Since you're coming from Toronto, I would seriously just claim ignorance and say you were in Windsor all weekend, they rarely check and just reverse the charges, tons of people I know from Toronto use that excuse when they are over here and we go to Detroit...

Facebook Adding Location Features This Month [REPORT]

Information has leaked that Facebook is set to roll out location-based features for users and brands as soon as this month. According to Advertising Age, users could see location options any day now.

These features will include the ability to check in at various locations, including retail spots and restaurants. Were unclear as to whether users will be able to add or customize their own locations, but we are fairly positive that this move will put Foursquare, Brightkite, Gowalla and other location-based services in an uncomfortable position.

Meaning for Users
The ability to check in to different locations is, as weve reported previously, a game-changing feature for Facebook. Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite and other startups that specialize in location-based features and services and that often take checks from corporations for branded integrations might have trouble competing with a Goliath like Facebook if the push toward checkins continues. Facebook has the userbase and mainstream adoption to bring location-sharing tools to a huge audience, excluding these newer competitors from the market. And if the company is rolling out features now, that likely means an acquisition is not likely, either.

If this feature does indeed roll out soon to end users, it also brings with it another round of privacy concerns. Its clear that not all users understand the risks of public sharing or how to protect their likes, groups and updates. When they risk exposing their locations to the general populace, another layer of security precautions (along with the usual media FUD) is sure to follow.

Meaning for Brands
McDonalds will be the first brand to test the new features. The McDonalds integration will involve users checking in at McDonalds restaurants and showing featured food items in their posts. Digital advertising and marketing shops around the country are preparing to construct campaigns around this new functionality.

Its interesting to note that this move further puts Facebook into competition with Google for local advertising dollars. Being able to target users geographically as well as demographically gives hyperlocal advertisers an edge and might cut into Googles most profitable revenue stream.

Would you use Facebook rather than Foursquare to check in to restaurants, night spots or other locations? Do you think Facebook can beat Foursquare and other services to making location checkins mainstream?

We welcome your comments and will continue to follow this story closely as we wait for an official response from Facebook.

I got Rogers reception lots of times in Hart Plaza since it's so close to the border.

I don't think I'm going to get the texting plan this year.

I think I'd still use foursquare. I have too many ppl on Facebook, and having everyone know where I am/been doesn't sit well with me.

Foursquare is a much smaller group of ppl, which I like.

Also, foursquare isn't only about just checking into places, it's also a game. It's competitive. that's another aspect I like about it that Facebook doesn't talk about having in their version.
