Moreso then anything else though it seems like Maison dropped the ball on this one by overselling the party. Shitty for all those that had tickets and had to wait in line for hours while other schmucks without tickets just greased their way in. Totally unacceptable.
It does however sound like the venue (if they get their shit together) has some potential to be a good mid-ranged size venue which imo the city is lacking right now.
As for Villalobos ... hopefully he comes back to TO. And to add to that, why in the fuck has Luciano not played here yet? Unlike Ricardo, he at least seems to come to North America a couple of times a year.
ps. i'd kill to be able to go to something like this
I don't understand why we can't have NYE parties like that.
NYE is always so shit for bookings in Toronto.

Despite the failed promoting+crowd attendance that night... the music was sick!
In hindsight, the moral of the story appears be that you should buy will-call tickets Seriously though, due to the one-off nature of this event, it was all about minimising the risks, as with this type of irregular event, there are too many unknown factors at play. As much as I disliked it, this is why I made sure to over- , rather than under-dress, and got there early at 10:45. We breezed in through the side entrance, and were somehow given hand stamps which meant that we were able to leave at one point to grab a bite to eat at the 24hr Tim Hortons, and then bypass the que to walk straight back in 
Musically, I wish Fries and Bridges had played during the peak hours, as they were playing some quality stuff, and crucially, kept up the consistency over a period of time, unlike the supposed headliners that followed. We were desperately waiting for the dancefloor to get less busy, which did not really happen until around 4am. On a positive note, we did not bump into any Jersey Shore meatheads.
Has anyone ever seen Villalobos dj when is not completely under the influence? How does his musical output vary? Maybe he performs well when he just strikes it lucky based on whatever random walk results from that night's cocktail of booze and drugs. Why is he sometimes happy to go into his own little world and play according to whatever heady effects the drugs and alcohol have on his mood, rather than reacting to the crowd's feelings? This could be why seeing him is such a rollercoaster ride in terms of quality.
For some of his loyal followers, the allure of seeing him play could be based on a kind of masochistic quest to catch him on a day that he is not terrible! Like with a manic depressive, maybe for these diehard fans who have seen him countless times, the pleasure they derive from his better sets is entirely relative to the kind of musical low that they felt on Friday. Compared with his peers, in absolute terms, maybe Villalobos is on occasions up there with the best; however, comparatively, once you factor in that his inconsitent performances may generate worse musical lows, then the relatively greater trough-peak gap between his best and worst performances may give a false impression of how great he really is.
I spoke to Sneak earlier on in the night and made the mistake of thanking him for bringing Ricardo to Toronto 
He was well on the way by that point, and said the after-party would be above a kebab shop on Peter and John...but that is not even an intersection!

These 'big' djs shouldn't be given a free pass to play whatever they want when they do gigs. I didn't go, but happy I didn't judging from all the nonsense on this thread. The only reason why some are excusing his music is cuz he's RICARDO VILLALOBOS but if it was any other no-name generic DJ playing the same type of music then everyone would say he/she sucks. I've only heard RV's 300 minute long techno/minimal tracks and his videos on youtube but it still sucks that he was so trashed that he played all over the map...or maybe I just don't 'get it' cuz it's higher art or some bs.

Can someone please post an impressive set from RV?
Everyone really hypes him up to be the top DJ (I think he was rated the top DJ in one of those lists within the last 2 years) but I have never heard anything from him that was exceptionally impressive. I am not being a dick and saying this stuff (impressive RV sets) doesn't exist, I would just like to hear a good set from him so I can understand the hype.
I want to like RV, but nothing I have heard to date has made me do so.
And on another note... a lot of people have the attitude that he is such an amazing DJ that he can play whatever music he likes just because he is so amazing and that those less sophisticated listers just wont get it. I do believe that you can totally mix genres, but when the DJ is the only one in a 1000 person room who is feeling the music (of whatever genre he decides to play), maybe theres something a little wrong there. Like if you decide to switch to another genre mid-set you better have a good reason for doing it and not just doing it to be like unique/ironic. You don't go to a Metallica concert and then hear them play punk rock because they are such good musicians and can just master any genre!
I almost feel like RV is the hipster choice because he is unique and different.
But to be honest I don't know much about RV in general and I would like someone to educate me! I am a big techno/minimal/deep house fan too...
