Tense game. Norway were better than us in the second half but we weathered it. The heat and humidity meant it wasn't the most fast paced game ever played, but we were lucky that our first really hot game was against another northern European team. We've got such a good chance now to get to the final.

Good game on both sides. I'm warming to the idea of a France-England final, hehe.

I'm usually very understanding and seldom insult players, let alone foreign ones, but... JESUS CHRIST, EMBOLO, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!? What was that for!? If you're going to dive for Switzerland like that, wear a freaking swimsuit and go find a swimming pool at the Olympics

What an idiot! They had just scored and were looking pretty good during that spell. Have to pray for penalties

Ah well, thought Switzerland might be able to pull it off. Up to the Englishmen to stop the Argentinian beast in its tracks now.

Anyway, back from the math lab:

Jokes aside, now that I've had a full round of matches to prod the model with a stick and listen for screams and growls, here's what it is currently insisting is reality:
  1. Argentina - 25%
  2. France - 15.425%
  3. A Newcomer - 13.54%
  4. Spain - 13.345%
  5. England - 7.885%

Turns out... my model had successfully picked the final four individually (I added the "newcomer" umbrella term as an aggregate of small percentages, as I, a puny human, didn't believe four former champions would make it as it's been 36 years since it last happened). It's funny how, more often than not, the numbers pick the right result and I pick a fight with the algorithm

This is not to say there were no upsets (I still can't believe Norway beat us despite having conceded the most goals out of any team in the round of 16), but the maths mathed reasonably well. And, I'm sure Argentina only beat Switzerland because of Embolo and because, well, they wear Adidas. Anyway, my model is now saying that the odds of each team winning the championship are:

It can't be right. The Opta Supercomputer, with far more resources than me, picks England versus France in the final, whereas my model picked Argentina and Spain to go through. My model picked the winner 82% of the time in the knockout round so... let's see how this goes

Just double checked. The ones it missed were pretty much the ones that ended in penalty kicks (it can't get draws right) and... the Brazilian elimination, as we've been the greatest enemies of my own spreadsheets

any time Brazil loses on the world stage , to the Brazilian fans it is like a funeral. and I also grieve with them.

Spain is pretty boring but you have to admit they are damn good.

Posted by Spacey Orange on Jul-15-2026 01:17:

Anyone but Argentina. Please.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-15-2026 06:58:

Spain deserve to be in the final. Just about the one prediction I've got right in this thing has been saying they were favourites right in my first post. They've had the hardest run to the final: Portugal, Belgium and France in the knock-out stages, and they've dealt with all of them without ever really being in trouble. They won the Euros in 2024, putting England to bed in the final, and I think they have far more quality than either us or Argentina. They've not been as exciting to watch as 2024, but they're peaking at the right moment.

It's going to be an absolute dog fight in the other semi tonight. I don't think either England or Argentina have played particularly great in this tournament. We've both got as far as we have through sheer doggedness and individual moments of brilliance. This is one of the great footballing rivalries, and it's rarely a clean fight. But whoever wins, I can't see anyone stopping Spain now.

Lol, I didn't learn until today that the final will feature a half-time show with musical performances. How utterly American, and annoying.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 19:36:

England doing good on pressing Argentina so far. Now let's get some goals. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Posted by OrangestO on Jul-15-2026 19:57:

Well done to England for standing up to that bullshit. Keep it up. Dan Burn header to win it incoming.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 20:13:

Thank you ref for yellow-carding the dude who just straight up bear-hugged Bellingham, lol.

Posted by OrangestO on Jul-15-2026 20:16:

Geettttt innnnnnnn!!!!

Posted by OrangestO on Jul-15-2026 20:19:

Jed Spence wow that tackle. He's been brilliant.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 20:28:

Lol at the dramatic roll on the ground from the Argentinian who got the ball stolen off him (didn't see who it was).

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 20:38:

I want to see England do more than just barely hang on, haha. Come on, guys, put another one in. (77 minutes in)

Posted by OrangestO on Jul-15-2026 20:48:

Awful tactics after our goal. Inviting them to score and there it is. Infuriating.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 20:48:

Fernndez just wide the fuck open out there. Yikes.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-15-2026 20:50:

This is going in a familiar direction.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 20:54:

Famously choke-at-the-end England versus this World Cup's "turn it on in the last thirty minutes to win" Argentina. Maybe we could have predicted this, lol.

Posted by Vector A on Jul-15-2026 21:04:

Disappointing. I don't think this Argentina side is beating Spain, though.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-15-2026 21:19:

Yep, classic England. Take the lead, stop trying to play, retreat into a defensive shell, lose.

I think Scaloni deserves credit though. He completely changed Argentina's system in the last hydration break and suddenly they were getting so much play down the right hand side. Sure enough, both goals came from that side. And the magic man with two more assists, of course.

I think Thomas Tuchel will get hammered in the English press for going defensive in that same hydration break. We went to five at the back and just invited Argentina to bombard us. It was a game decided by two managers and two contrary sets of substitutions. Argentina's worked, ours completely failed.

Posted by planetaryplayer on Jul-15-2026 22:31:

Was Messi always playing wide? I was in and out of consciousness during the first half but the quality of his passes into the box when I was alert was pretty good. It was inevitable
