Motorola Droid/Milestone, Palm Pre/Pre Plus, Samsung Omnia HD, Nokia N900, Samsung i9000 Galaxy S (this one rocks a 1GHz A8!), Samsung S8500 Wave (1GHz as well), Sony-Ericsson Satio... I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them or care to find them. THese are the big ones, at least.

Samsung i9000 Galaxy S is the sweetest looking piece of hardware in a while.

Is this saying that the Milestone is actually faster (in practice) than the Nexus One, X10 and so on? It definitely holds its own, but it does seem to get out of breath every now and then.

Not that it really matters to me at this point but is there a benchmark of some kind comparing these?

I cant wait for the dual core 1.5 ghz phones

Nah. The Snapdragon at 1GHz is quicker than a 600MHz Cortex A8 platform. Having used both a Milestone and Nexus One, I'd say they're both fairly equivalent in daily, normal use.

Now a 1GHz A8, that'll generally be quicker than a Snapdragon at the same clock freq. Comparing two phones head to had though is like apples to oranges, since they all use various system-on-a-chip designs with either the Cortex A8 or a Qualcomm unit (as is the case with the Snapdragon) as the CPU, various graphics chips (PowerVR SGX series being fairly common), GPS, wireless radios, etc.

There are benchmarks out there, though. For example, I believe it was Anandtech that pitted the iPad's Apple A4 (which is a 1GHz Cortex A8-based SOC) against the Nexus One, and it showed the A4 as besting the Snapdragon SOC in almost everything. Mind you, a fair bit of that can be attributed to the high-end PowerVR graphics chip in the A4s packaging to help render webpages and such.

Mobilicity - UNLIMITED EVERYTHING $65

New carrier, Mobilicity, is getting ready to launch service in the competitive Canadian wireless market. Mobilicity has been silent about rate plans and devices, but a possible slip in a CTV article may be the start of future leaks.

With launch of the wireless startup predicted to be early June, a source close to the company told CTV News that "a cornerstone of the companys offensive will be an aggressively priced unlimited talk, text, long-distance and data package for $65." Assuming Mobilicity will use the concept of Home and Away Zones like WIND Mobile does, users will have to pay for addition usage outside of Mobilicitys coverage area.

WIND Mobile is also offering unlimited rate plans but with a slightly higher price tag. Unlimited voice, data (soft capped at 5GB), and texting will set back $80/month but includes voicemail and caller id. Assuming Mobilicity will charge an extra $5 for voicemail, customers will be looking at a cost savings of $10/month ($120/year) when compared to WINDs unlimited plans.

Looks like there is competition between the new entrants, now we just need the existing carriers in Canada to react

CTV.ca states "cornerstone of the companys offensive will be an aggressively priced unlimited talk, text, long-distance and data package for $65."

The article also states a June launch.

thanks AJ for the fix

Mobilicity is INSANE!

Posted by LightsOut on May-14-2010 16:25:

HOLY FUCK
thats $65 plan is ridiculously good. If they offer BIS im leaving rogers, that simple.

Posted by dEsidEL on May-14-2010 16:43:

they will offer BIS

just remember that they operate on AWS 3G 1700/2100 like WIND so their handsets will be limited initially without iPhone support. Nexus One will operate on it though.

Hopefully future iPhones will be AWS compatible..

Posted by E2EK1EL on May-14-2010 17:04:

They have the BB9700, BIS is a must.

Mobilicity has the best lockdown for every gen for $50+

The Dinosaurs would sign for unlimited calling + unlimted calls to Asia. Since they don't even know how to turn on a computer.

Normal ppl would sign for $65 plan, b/c we txt and use data only and having the ability to call unlimited is an added bonus.

I wonder what their t-mobile roaming packages are. I remember they were going to have a deal with them for Canadians roaming in the states.

Stupid slut blames Rogers for "ruining" her marriage

"Rogers denies any responsibility for affair or consequences"

A Toronto woman says the billing practices of Rogers Wireless Inc. led to her husband discovering her extramarital affair.

Now the woman, whose husband walked out, is suing the communications giant for $600,000 for alleged invasion of privacy and breach of contract, the results of which she says have ruined her life.

In 2007, Gabriella Nagy had a cellphone account with Rogers which sent the monthly bill to her home address in her maiden name. Her husband was the account holder for the family's cable TV service at the same address. Around June 4, 2007, he called Rogers to add internet and home phone.

The following month, Rogers mailed a global invoice for all of its services to the matrimonial home that included an itemized bill for Nagy's cellular service, according to the statement of claim filed in Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

When Nagys husband opened the Rogers invoice, he saw several hour-long phone calls to a single phone number.

Nobody does business this way and he's not stupid, says Nagy, who is in her 30s. He called the number, spoke to the third party who confirmed the affair, which had lasted only a few weeks, Nagy told the Star.

My husband didn't tell me that's how he found out, he just left.

The husband used the previously private and confidential information that the defendant unilaterally disclosed to the husband to inquire about the people that the plaintiff was telephoning and the nature of such calls, the statement of claim says.

The statement alleges Rogers unilaterally terminated its cellular contract with the plaintiff that had been in her maiden name and included it in the husbands account that was under his surname.

The plaintiffs maiden name and the husband's surname were different. Such unilateral action by the defendant was done without the knowledge, information, belief, acquiescence or approval of the plaintiff.

In a statement of defence, Rogers denies it terminated the contract and says the company "cannot be held responsible for the condition of the marriage, for the plaintiff's affair and consequential marriage break-up, nor the effects the break-up has had on her.

Rogers is not the cause of these. The marriage break-up and its effects happened, or alternatively would in any event have happened, regardless of the form in which the plaintiff and her husband received their invoices for Rogers services in July 2007.

Rogers acknowledges it consolidated the invoicing of the various services being provided to the plaintiff and her husband so that one monthly invoice would be sent to their home. Apart from administrative efficiency, doing so would result in savings to the plaintiff and her husband for the services.

Nagy is deeply embarrassed and ashamed about what happened. It was a mistake, she said of the affair. But I didnt deserve to lose my life over it.

After her husband left her and their two children, ages 6 and 7, she was so distraught her work performance suffered and she lost her job as an apartment rental agent that had paid her almost $100,000 until she was let go in Oct. 10, 2007. The plaintiff wept uncontrollably at her workplace . . . and became incapable of performing her employment duties, reads the statement of claim. Nagy says the employer was aware of the situation and that she was receiving medical attention.

Nagys lawyer, Edward Tonello, says this case is unprecedented in Canada.

In Ontario, we dont have a privacy act, unlike British Columbia and other provinces.

Nagy discovered how her husband found out after Rogers left her a voicemail, in late August 2007, advising that it was about to terminate her cellular services because of unpaid invoices. Thats when she learned Rogers had terminated her account in her maiden name and included it in the global account. Rogers says the invoice was sent to Ms. and her husbands surname.

When she confronted her husband, he said, Thank god for the Rogers bill. Had it not come bundled in my cable service I would never known. Thats the only way, Nagy says. She asked that his name not be included in the story to spare him further embarrassment. His name does not appear in the court filing.

I lost everything, she says. I want others to know what a big corporation has done. I trusted Rogers with my personal information. We had a contract and agreement that put my life right in their hands.

After she terminated her relationship with the third party in August 2007, the jilted lover, himself a married father of three, called Rogers and obtained her secret password to her voicemail and used it to access it to harass her and taunt the husband, the statement of claim alleges.

As well, she alleges Rogers disconnected her cellular service in January 2009 and said her cellular phone was being invoiced to her husband's account. The wrongdoing that occurred in 2007 reoccurred, the statement says noting she subsequently switched to another cellular service provider.

Rogers denies those claims.

webOS design mastermind Matias Duarte leaves Palm... and could be headed to Google

According to a report filed over at All Things D, Matias Duarte -- the man considered to be the driving force behind the user interface of webOS -- has left Palm, and may very well be headed to Google. Duarte held the title of Senior Director of Human Interface and User Experience, and before working his magic at Palm, was one of the hands that touched the Sidekick and Helio UIs. Although Palm has confirmed his departure from the company, they aren't giving up the goods on where he's headed next, though John Paczkowski over at D says "multiple sources" indicate he's on his way to Google, presumably to work on Android.

While Matias was unquestionably a prime mover at Palm, we had heard rumblings that his rigid attitude toward design and control-freak nature sometimes caused conflict amongst the team. Of course, you don't crank out something as groundbreaking as webOS without some hard boundaries. The news that he's headed to Google could signal a major shift for Android towards dealing with the myriad UI issues the mobile OS has, particularly a lack of cohesion in the stock builds -- something HTC has gone to great lengths to shore up with Sense.

Howard Chui, his baby & all his recent phones lol

Mobile aficionados with a serious need for processing speed should be all smiles this morning, as Qualcomm has announced that it is now shipping its third-generation Snapdragon processors to its hardware clients. Known as the MSM8360 and the MSM8660, both dual-core chipsets top out at 1.2GHz and provide support for 2D/3D hardware acceleration, OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 acceleration, 1080p video encoding and decoding, integrated GPS, and 24-bit WXGA displays. Where theyre different is that the MSM8360 supports HSPA+ while the MSM8660 plays nice with HSPA+/EV-DO Rev. B. Qualcomm wont disclose who has already taken ownership of the chipsets, but we imagine it wont be long before the usual suspects start rolling out new handsets featuring these two lovely ladies.

I think I am going with the Motorola Milestone/droid to replace my iphone. I was thinking of the Sony Xperia X10, but the Droid has a Cortex CPU vs the Sony Snapdragon.

Thoughts?

Why not get a Nexus One? Good phone, only problem that occurred with my phone... had to send it back to get the power button repaired twice

Froyo running like a charm though

I love Google Voice (sucks I am running it on wifi)

I just cant wait for Videotron to launch their network so I can use the 3G finally.

Well I was originally leaning towards the Sony because of sound quality. This will obviously going to double as a mp3 player, and Sony usually has better sound quality. HTC cannot make a digital to analogue converter to save their life.

The better consideration is that the Milestone runs on Android 2.1

The Experia is 1.6, if I'm not mistaken.

Dont buy any pre-2.X Android phone, bc Google and/or the phone makers dont seem to be supporting the early adopters with the 1.5 and 1.6 OS's.

EDIT:

On the Milestone vs. Nexus One comparison... if you are planning to sign a contract to get the phone at discounted price ($150 on 3 yr term for the Milestone), then that would rule out the Nexus One entirely.

But I guess if you're buying either one outright at full price, the decision becomes trickier, less of an obvious choice.

I like either equally. But I like that the Milestone has a physical keypad option!! Im not forced to use a virtual one if i dont want to.

Too bad we have no idea when Canada will ever see the HTC Evo 4... that phone is gonna be a wickedly sweet and powerful Android phone

EDIT 2:

My Milestone should be here any day now!! CANNOT WAIT!! Decided to leave BlackBerry for an Android phone... I just love how the phones look and work. My buddy in the US has had the DROID since it came out in Nov... and he loves the SHIT out of it...

Never seen him so attached to a phone in my life... he too left his Berry for it.

June release, rumoured $1000 price tag. That's way too rich for my blood. Probably cause it has the Cortex A8 chip.

I need a new phone, but I just cannot decide! Digi how do you like your Motorola Droid?
