Seems like a pretty nice phone. Would be a nice change from my N1 thats for sure.

If I do get the Samsung it be my second phone from Korea. First one was the LG Eve and only had it for 3 months and for the N1.

I am so use to Nokia and Motorola (years ago). It was so hard to change, just sucks their phones haven't kept up to the market (i.e iPhone OS and Android). I know Motorola using Android but they phone still emit a ton of radiation.

All I can really hope for in the next coming months Google changes the N1.

I would like to get the iPhone but nah, no use when I can turn my phone into a mobile hotspot and have an iPad access the net via. WiFi

One thing thats nice about the Galaxy S is the swipe text input.

And Aaron has a Droid/Milestone... noice! Didnt know.

I hope to be in that club by Monday, Tuesday at the very latest, when my new phone arrives in the mail! <3

I have yet to talk to a person that had a Droid and DOESNT love the shit out of it! (Good sign!)

You guys w/ your Android OS should make your own dedicated thread. Since the % of the next wave of users are heading to Apple and Android, it would be nice for ppl to get the info they need.

Leave this thread for the "other" platforms and etc.

First of all, please forgive my lack of knowledge in this field. I currently have a Samsung m620, which is very small, and has protective leather sleeve with a built-in secondary battery. I've been pretty happy with it, but pressing one key 3-4x to get a letter while texting is annoying, as you can imagine. One side is an mp3 player, the other side is the actual phone. My 3 yr contract with Bell is now up. I have a corporate deal since I'm employed with the gov't. My average monthly bill is aprox $50 (unlimited local calling after 6pm and w/e's, caller ID, voice mail, all incl.), with 250 texts, but I think I'll bump that up since I've been texting more and more. I have big hands/fingers, and wanted to get a cell with a slide-out type of keyboard, but that is also great at playing mp3 dj sets (when I jog, bike, x-c, ski, etc...), and ideally has a camera. I don't really need to use the web. If the phone can access wi-fi hotspots and I can surf for free, then that would be great. The recent flyer I got promotes the LG Rumour 2, Motorola Dext, and Nokia N97, for the slide-out keyboards. Seems like those phones are most type-friendly (for guys like me) and economical (since I don't need all the bells and whistles). Looking for reliability, quality, user friendliness - I have no qualms paying for that.

Your suggestions and input are appreciated !

I have a feeling it be more like $700-$800.

Guess were stuck waiting until the North American debut.

NDP tables Cellphone Freedom Act aimed to unlock cellphones

Bruce Hyer, NDP MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, introduced private members Bill C-560 today, otherwise known as the Cellphone Freedom Act. According to the dedicated site Dont Lock My Freedom there are 3 rules:

Consumers buying new cell phones in Canada must be informed of the existence of any network lock on their phone before sale.
Phone companies must unlock handsets upon request, free of charge, when a consumer purchases a new phone outright without a contract, or any time after purchase.
Phone companies must unlock handsets upon request, free of charge, when a consumer comes to the end of their contract or at any time thereafter.
Hyer said Mobile phone customers should have the freedom to choose whether they want to be locked into a companys cell network or not. Right now, most consumers dont even know they cant switch to another network without throwing out their phone and buying a new one, or trying to unlock their handset at some expensive aftermarket shop. Many resort to trying to download complicated instructions off the internet, but these can result in dead phones if used improperly.

The NDP wants your help. You can check out the site here, sign the Petition here and be part of their Facebook group .

Its a good way for the NDP to get young voters who just turned 18 or are voting for their first time to try and vote for them.

Rogers to launch Chatr, a new low-end brand to compete with WIND, Mobilicity & Public Mobile

Forgive us for keeping this really short, but theres still a lot of information we dont know. Over the last few days, weve been hearing a lot of Canadian birdies singing that Rogers Wireless is planning to launch a new wireless brand in Canada. To be known as Chatr, the carrier is said to have been created solely for the purpose of putting wireless upstarts WIND Mobile and Mobilicity out of business by offering affordable handsets and great rate plans. It is said that the training of employees will begin in earnest as of mid-July, and will be followed shortly with the official launch of the brand in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. We do not have specific information about pricing at the moment as that is still being worked out by the high ups, but we do know for a fact that the handsets Chatr will offer include the Nokia 1661, Nokia 2680 slide, Samsung Gravity and the LG Sapphire. Well be back with more as we get it.
UPDATE: Weve got an inventory screenshot after the jump.

Interesting... Guess this was bound to happen. Plus Public Mobile got funding from China to expand their network or something.

"Public Mobile and its Chinese partner have struck a $350-million financing deal with the Export-Import Bank of China that will help the company build a wireless network from Windsor to Quebec City."

Confirmed: Rogers launching new wireless brand Chatr later this summer - Unlimited Talk & Text

Rogers has officially announced their latest wireless brand called Chatr. This is a brand spanking new division that caters to those who want to get on a plan with unlimited talk and text. Although there are no official launch cities announced, Chatr is expected to be available in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver later this Summer. These are the same locations that Wind Mobile and Mobilicity operate in.

Here are the details of Chatr Wireless:
- They will offer Unlimited unlimited talk and text plans
- No term contracts within defined Chatr zones
- Will be supported by independent customer care and extensive retail distribution
- Rumoured handsets are: Nokia 2680 Slide, LG Sapphire, Samsung Gravity

In a press release John Boynton, EVP & CMO of Rogers said Weve been watching this niche but growing category closely and its clear that some Canadians want to use their handsets for voice and text only but want a network they can trust. The launch of a third brand mirrors many other industries like the hospitality and retail sectors and is designed to offer Canadians more choice.

What do you think of a 3rd Rogers brand?

CRTC rules mobile wireless data subject to existing framework for net traffic management.

Roughly means: your ISP must follow the same rules for managing data you send/receive on your mobile that it does for your pc. UGH!!

Here's the direct CRTC release:

Symbian-Guru shuts down, says Nokia is 'losing hard'

Well, we can't sugar-coat this one -- when a major Nokia / Symbian site like Symbian-Guru decides to close up shop "thanks to Nokia's consistently piss-poor hardware choices and Symbian's lack of ability to even remotely compete in terms of features," there's not much else to say. It sounds like shutting things down was at once both incredibly easy and incredibly hard for site heads Ricky Cadden and Rita El Khoury, who've both penned long letters about their decision -- you can tell both of them remain incredibly passionate about Nokia and Symbian, but that they've been disappointed by mediocre handsets like the N97 one time too many. Better hope Nokia can take that MeeGo for handsets pre-alpha we saw yesterday and whip it into something good, we suppose. You should really hit the source link and read the entire post on Symbian-Guru, but we've collected some choice quotes after the break.

Ricky:
"I've tried to use all of Nokia's various products and services to the best of my ability, and I just can't do it anymore."
"I can't continue to support a manufacturer who puts out such craptastic 'flagships' as the N97, and who expects me to use services that even most of Nokia's own employees don't use."
"After this experience with the Nokia N97, there's simply no way I trust them to not screw up with the N8 not enough for me to fork over $500 of my own money, at least."
"Like Android, Symbian Foundation prides itself on being open and free loudly and oftentimes obnoxiously boasting about how its source code is free for all despite no one really caring about this, at least in my circle."
"Both Symbian and Nokia are dying brands in the U.S., if not already dead, and I'm sick and tired of banging the gong alone."
"Of course I'll still keep my eye on Nokia. If they can put out 2 flagship devices in a row that don't completely suck, I may even give them another chance. I won't hold my breath."
"To Nokia, you guys are losing. Hard. Wake the hell up. Doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results is the definition of insanity."
"I sincerely hope that the upper brass at Nokia starts listening to the folks who are putting in extra time and effort these folks know what's going on, and like I did originally, simply want to see Nokia succeed."
Rita:

"I swear I could get a VISA, buy an airplane ticket, travel to Texas and talk to Ricky in person before Nokia Messaging for IM loads and opens a conversation with him on my N97 Mini."
"But honestly, how can you blame outside developers when Nokia themselves can't seem to pull through a decent application?"
"What good does it do me, as a user, if you have 40 or 50 or 60 % marketshare when you fail to gain any developer traction?"
"Where are the games that make me pop my eyes in awe? The N8 will get Angry Birds. Big whoop. It took me all of 2 days to finish all levels of Angry Birds on my iPod Touch and you know what? When I was done, I moved on to the next game. Could I say the same about the N8?"
"I can't evangelize a platform when I'm no longer 100% convinced myself: that would be hypocrisy and I'm not a hypocrite."
" It had to be done and although it was hard at first, I've now come to terms with the decision."

Business Insider: Apple, Google, and RIM were all contenders to purchase Palm

Now that the dust from the HP Palm merger has settled, some new details are starting to emerge. The Business Insider is reporting that Apple, Google, and RIM all had serious conversations with Palm about a potential acquisition. An anonymous source familiar with the matter tells BI: Apple and Google were interested in Palms 450+ patent library and pending patents, while RIM had the deal in their hands before things went south. The report goes on to say that Nokia was no where near the deal. Hit the read link for the full report.

(I was hoping Apple to buy Palm)
