The Business Insider is reporting that Apple, Google, and RIM all had serious conversations with Palm about a potential acquisition. An anonymous source familiar with the matter tells BI: Apple and Google were interested in Palms 450+ patent library and pending patents, while RIM had the deal in their hands before things went south. The report goes on to say that Nokia was no where near the deal. Hit the read link for the full report. (I was hoping Apple to buy Palm) |

We closed the deal officially on July 1st.
Here's part of an email I got on Monday from a VP (non-restricted, otherwise I'd be in trouble);

So I called up Rogers today to inquire about eligibility, general iPhone 4 questions, etc... when I found out that someone had 'mistakenly' changed my contract code and that I went from a 1yr contract to a 3yr contract with them. This is a huge deal, as it would affect many of the options I'd have being on a 3yr contract. Anyways, the CSR caught that and changed it back to a 1yr but with a better deal of unlimited txt msg'ing instead of the 1000txt/sms msg'ing i had before.
The CSR was super cool. I've only ever had good experiences with Rogers' call centre. ![]()

Report: Mobilicity and Public Mobile have less than 7,000 subscribers, combined.

| This month, Rogers has launched a new 50% off promotion for 6PM early evenings and also made 6PM early evenings a new plan feature choice. However, I am not really sure how I feel about this new 6PM feature update from Rogers. Obviously I prefer that Rogers just make 6PM early evening calling free (instead of charging $7.00/month), but then I cant forget that the Canadian wireless industry is about imitation and not innovation (evenings normally start at 9PM with the Canadian carriers). 50% 6PM Early Evenings With the free 6PM early evening calling promotion ending on August 3, Rogers has now introduced a new 50% off 6PM early evening calling promotion. Expiring on September 15, 2010, Rogers customers who opt for the 6PM early evening calling option will receive the feature at 50% off. In other words, instead of paying $7.00/month, customers now pay $3.50/month until the feature is removed by the customer. The add-on does not require customers to be on a contract and existing Rogers customers are also eligible without having to renew their existing contracted term (if applicable). New Plan Feature Choice: 6PM Early Evening Calling Another 6PM calling promotion from Rogers, this one expiring on November 1, 2010, brings 6PM early evening calling as a new plan feature choice. On the existing Rogers Voice Plans, Share Plans, Voice & Data plans, and Student Plans, customers have the choice to add one of the following free promotions to the existing plan: Unlimited Messages (text, picture, video) My5 Canada-wide Unlimited Networking Calling (Rogers, Fido, Rogers Home Phone) Double your Minutes 6PM early evening calling is now being added as a fifth feature choice (3-year agreement required). Again, it would be great to have 6PM as a free standard option and then still being able to choose one of the four aforementioned features, but this is Rogers were talking about. At least now, customers who do more talking on their mobile can choose 6PM calling for free and save $7.00/month. |

| Originally posted by E2EK1EL Report: Mobilicity and Public Mobile have less than 7,000 subscribers, combined. ![]() Theres an interesting article on the GSMAs Mobile Business Briefing that gives insights into the number of subscribers our new entrants might have. Currently there are rumours out there that have WIND Mobile bringing in 100,000 subscribers since launching last December. However, there are no stats of either Mobilicity or Public Mobile. Were not sure where these numbers came from but they state that Public Mobile who operates in Toronto and Montreal have a 0.02% market share with 3,584 subscribers. During the auction Public spent $53 million and have the possibility of reaching 19 million customers. They opened their doors on March 18th and with this stat is shows they sign up on average of 25 subscribers per day (its been 141 days since the doors opened). In addition, Mobilicity invested $243.1-million for 10 licenses during the Canadian Wireless Spectrum Auction and currently operates in Toronto, but will expand to Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa later this year. When it comes to subscribers the article states they have brought in 3,000 (0.01% market share) since launching on May 14th so effective today Mobilicity has been in operation for 84 days and on average have signed up 36 people every day. Check out the full breakdown after the break ![]() That's horrible news, I hope they pick up soon |

(Back in the days I had this minor problem too, misformed by the Roger's moronic CSR and all charges waived.
Mine was only $120.00, but at least I asked and didn't take it overboard.
I've seen the $23,000 Bell bill from some moron tethering off his cheese ass phone to download a 1.2GB AVI a few years ago, but this one is brutal!)
Math Time
$23,000 = 1.2GB
$85,000 = 5GB
*6GB = $115,000 - I think paying $30.00 is a better pick*
Facebook launches Places, location check-in, discovery

Facebook is currently holding a media event (its still going on), but we wanted to update you since its pretty interesting and has to do with mobile devices theyre launching that much-rumored Foursquare-competing product, called Places. It is to help you with three things: help you see where you are, help you see whos around you, and help you see whats going on nearby (discovery). You can tag friends with you while checking in to locations, and Places will automatically check you in and create a news feed story showing where you are. Facebook also has opened up API access to Places and Gowalla is one of the first partners on stage demonstrating how they are going to make sure of Places. Foursquare just got up on stage, too Facebook Places is the new hotness. Yelp just took the stage after Foursquare, were pretty impressed.
Facebook Places will be available starting tonight in a new iPhone application update, and in Facebooks mobile touch website for advanced mobile devices.

How to prevent your friends from checking you into Facebook Places
![]()
Facebook Places not only lets you check in to various locations (a la Foursquare or Gowalla) but it allows your friends to check you in as well, which could be a little creepy. Luckily for those of us who prefer to keep where we are private, our good friend Phil Nickinson from Android Central tells us how to just. stop. it.:
You can disable that feature now by going into your privacy settings. Hit the customize link, scroll down to the things other share section, and disable the Friends can check me into places feature.
Fortunately, the first time anyone tries to check you in youll get an email notification, but if you prefer to do your own dang checking in, thank you very much, follow Phils advice up top.

Nokia's OPK is out, Microsoft exec in as President and CEO (updated)

Nokia's OPK is out, Microsoft exec in as President and CEO (updated)
By Thomas Ricker posted Sep 10th 2010 1:41AM Breaking News
The rumors were true. Nokia just announced a change in leadership: Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is out, Stephen Elop, the current head of Microsoft's Business Division, is in. That's right, the very Finnish Nokia will now be led by a Canadian. Before Microsoft, Elop, a computer engineer by education, held senior executive positions at Juniper Networks, Adobe Systems, and Macromedia. The embattled OPK will vacate his position as President and CEO on September 20th and will continue to chair the Board at Nokia Siemens Networks. Money quote:
"His (Elop's) strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company."
Naturally, OPK leaves with a severance package honoring his 30 years of service. That translates to 18 months gross base salary and target incentive totalling about 4.6 million plus 100,000 restricted Nokia shares that will vest on October 1, 2010. Once again, proof that it's good to be king.
Update: Click through if you'd like to gaze into the hopeful eyes of Nokia's new CEO.
Update 2: Nokia just introduced Stephen Elop to the world in a live press conference (available now for replay) from Espoo. Jorma Ollila, Nokia's Chairman and former CEO, confirmed that the CEO search had been ongong since late May and OPK, for his part, has been very professional and "very gallant" throughout the process. Jorma then praised Stephen for his "very strong cultural sensitivity," a question that's very near and dear to Fins concerned about a North American taking control of their beloved Nokia. Elop will be moving to Helsinki in the very near future and his first order of business will be to "listen." Elop said that Nokia is well aware of the challenges it faces as well as the solutions to those challenges. It's his job, then, to surface those solutions and to execute on them going forward. Understandably, Stephen refused to talk about specific next steps. Stephen did say that the North American smartphone market is absolutely critical to Nokia and will be an emphasis under his leadership (as it had under OPK, unfortunately, with poor results). Hopefully, Elop's contacts in the US can help.
One final tidbit of interest. When Stephen sat down with Ballmer to express his intention to leave Microsoft for Nokia, Ballmer was said to be disappointed but supportive due to his respect for Nokia as a company. He even helped with the transition. Don't you hate it when your stereotypes are debunked?
(Will this save Nokia from sinking faster then the Titanic?)

Say, I found this kinda cool... I started texting iCoke PIN codes, and getting $.75 off my bill for each PIN submitted. The deal is going on until the end of October, and you can save up to $7.50 off your bill per week or $30 per month.
Sweet deal.
