Well, coming from a gay guy, I take that as quite the compliment.

I'm a writer/editor for this company.

We're about to get 401K/ESOPs in 2014, so I'm super stoked for the upcoming year.

Big things ahead. And who said a journalism degree couldn't get you anywhere?

This is where'd I post a pic of Woony sleeping in a rugged couch at berghain, where probably hoards of men have shared fluids, but Berlin's no-camera policy put a stop to that.

I'm traveling to Poland/Germany again this April.

I want to visit Berlin (something I didn't do during my last trip), and I would like to stop in at Berghain.

Any suggestions/advice?

i tried to look for some kind of pattern of which people they let in, but i couldn't see one. 9 out of 10 got rejected in my line, but i somehow got in.

attitude, level of drunkeness, and probably also what you talk about.
they have cameras covering the lines so they probably have mics too. I know they've made their mind up if yur gonna get in, before u get to the door. this is what ive been told at least. never been there.
i'll probably never get in by saying this, but the lines at berghain are the last surviving remnants of east germanys stasi. :P

I've never been to Berlin, so obviously never to Berghain. It's been discussed on TA quite a bit though, over the years.

The only info I've gained is that you should know *at least* some German language (the more, the better), so you can talk with the bouncers when they speak with you at the door. You should also know who is playing on the night (the DJ/DJs/whatever, just know the line-up and why you're there), and you should somewhat dress to fit the crowd (I don't know what that means... my knowledge of fashion is poor at best, let alone Berlin fashion. I would assume hipster-ish, but I might be way off )

Basically, do whatever you can to not be American, or a tourist

I don't mean that last bit to be taken as a slag-off, either. As a 30-somthing Australian, I'm pretty sure they'd never let me in the place, just on principle

ive been to berlin twice, love it there, have friends who live there so it's always a free place to crash and overall it's pretty cheap

it really depends on where you stay, there are parts that are like time square and cost that much and there are parts that remind me of the east village in the old new york. i guess that's why i love going back, it has a sense of grimey

with that being said, i've never made it into berghain. i've done literally everything, went with locals and we collectively didn't get into berghain, went at off hours (sunday at 10am), went with one other guy dressed up really well so we looked gay, still NADA. It's the luck of the draw I guess but because I've been to unfortunate in getting in I realize how much more awesome the other clubs are.

I think to really capture the essence of German spet/sped, german party scene, you need to attend a festival. The berlin club nights are epic in that they go forever, start in the morning go all day, start in the evening, whenever they want basically.

You can honestly spend days on days in berlin and still not see everything. it's a very easy city to learn but still very large to spend less than 5 days there.

Kruezberg is where I mainly stayed (in around watergate) and there are a ton of places to eat. I had the best falafel and halloumi out there.

End of the day, Berlin is DEFINITELY a must stop in EU for me, it's a good home base as flights from NY are direct, can be cheap, and it's a major hub (if not munich) to get south going to barca, ibiza, paris, or praha

no love for 5pointz/phunfactory lol

the bouncers do make good choices. it sucks getting rejected, which has happened to me before. but if you compare the people inside berghain with the people inside tresor, berghain is much better. you don't have to deal with hoards of spanish, italian, french and portugese backpack tourists without any interest of what's playing. there's nothing worse than a group of 12 backpack-swinging ketamin-fueled spaniards shouting and taking selfies on a packed dancefloor.

i don't know about microphones in the queue, but you shouldn't speak at all when lining up. knowing german might help, but it isn't necessary. speaking english worked fine for me. don't go in big groups, don't dress up, know who's playing and don't argue if you're denied entrance.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Jan-07-2014 15:14:

i agree, i've also been to a few clubs in berlin that were not so great i've seen some very close to neo nazi roots still lingering in some individuals but that's neither here nor there. living in ny i see hood rat bums still lingering in this city so encountering something like that on my travels is familiar but lacksesepsotygh is right, there bouncers do their jobs and it shows through when you're in the establishment.

With that being said, sisyphos is at the top of my list in Berlin. Watergate is cool but sisyphos really speaks german techno to me

Posted by lacksesepsotygh on Jan-07-2014 17:38:

any recommendations besides watergate and sisyphos? i've went by outside of sisyphos, but never went in. they never seem to list events on resident advisor, and i've heard they have different styles on all dancefloors, which usually means various forms of top 40.

i've been at about blank, arenaclub, tresor, berghain/panorama, stattbad wedding, horst, festplats krzbrg, so36, club der visionaere hoppetosse, suicide circus and raw temple. besides these i'd like to visit watergate, kater holzig, cookies, renate and farbfernseher.

for summer events, i can really recommend about blank.

edit: don't ever go to the place called matrix near warschauerstrasse.

This is essentially what I've learned about the club from reading all the comments regarding entry.

Perhaps my tattoos will help?

I'll give it a go when I visit. Like EYK said, there's so much to see in Berlin I wouldn't be pissed if they rejected me.

It's worth a try, though.

i'd suggest sisyphos 100% but i guess from what my berlin friends tell me, i've already talked about it way too much publicly. I'd say go check it out, i think its only open every 3rd wkd of the month and the open air yard is pretty ace! I'm good friends with a resident there (nicorus) and he's pretty straight up techno. Definitely not top40 from what I've seen, think confetti, barn, vans, and school buses!

i've been to festplats, stattbadd wedding, tresor, and a few others, I think R6 club which is a mixed open air interior club, and watergate. as a tourist, it's always "fun" to get on a berlin club line, there's a sense of 'i might not make it in' alas chilling with locals it's always easier and less to worry about.

I find berlin is really strong the earlier in the morning you go...like closer to 5-9am is when a lot of the good parties really pop off.

I'm not sure what you're saying, but this was taken at the TA factory in Montreal which was often referred to as the 5Pointz of the city.
