Skysports.com can reveal Laurent Robert is close to signing for Bolton from Newcastle.

Robert was always expected leave St James' Park this summer after falling out-of-favour at St James' Park .

The Frenchman has admitted he was looking to leave Newcastle because of his strained relationship with Magpies boss Graeme Souness.

The news alerted a number of clubs to Robert's availability with several sides making enquiries for him.

Manchester City, Portsmouth and Rangers have all been linked with Robert, but Bolton have stolen a march on their rivals by luring him to Lancashire.

Bolton have agreed a fee with Newcastle for Robert and the player's agent Willie McKay confirmed a move was expected to be sealed on Monday subject to a medical.

"Laurent is set to sign for Bolton on Monday subject to a medical," McKay told skysports.com.

"He is due to put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal and he is on the same deal he was on at Newcastle.

"Talks with Bolton have gone well and I expect a deal to be concluded.

"Sam Allardyce has always been an admirer of Laurent and wants to reunite him with Jay-Jay Okocha after their time together at Paris Saint Germain."

after gary speed last year i'll take great pleasure in taking one of your better players who if it wasnt for the manager might be able to drive you up the table

Souness has taken us down a level and clubs like Bolton are now our rivals whether we like to say it or not. If we sell Robert to Bolton we are strengthening a rival and weakening ourselves, all for the pathetic sum of 1M.

Souness is taking Newcastle down a very rocky road.

i said that the day he took over, and i still stand by it, I don't rate him as a motivator, as a man manager or anything. I know you have maybe 2-3x our fan base, but as you say we're competing for the same players as a rule now, and no matter what ppl like turner & luke terry say to me, I think you missed Speed last season.

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-12-2005 14:11:

I'm not sure about the Speed thing, some of our fans would agree with you. His final season for us he was quite poor although he's always been a good leader and that is something we have missed. I think Bolton's style suits him more the way they pack the midfield. His lack of pace isn't exposed as much and there is always a player nearby to play the short pass to. In Newcastle's attacking 4-4-2 system with plenty of width and pace under Bobby Robson, Speed was part of one of the best midfield's in the country for a couple of seasons but in his final season his lack of pace was found out time and time again and his passing just wasn't up to it. I also think Bobby made a mistake playing him just about every game of that season, he was definitely burnt out. A clever signing by Allardyce though, and Robert could be an extremely clever signing.

The tragedy is that Robert, Bellamy and Kluivert all wanted to stay with Newcastle. How much is it going to cost to replace them? Robert is one of the most skillful players in the Premiership but the trick is getting consistency out of him. Souness told him to work hard and defend, but he is an attacking player and when Robert did as he was told he was told and worked hard in our own half he was useless to us! He needs to be playing up the wing, you don't see Robert Pires trodding on Ashley Cole's toes at left back. Allardyce will probably have the sense to see this and give him a bit more freedom up front. The only problem with Bolton though is their aeriel balls, Robert is not going to be winning balls in the air and holding the ball up, you need to get the ball to his feet. Diouf has looked decent for Bolton though so I think Robert will do well. I can see him coming back to haunt us, last year Robert completely destroyed Carr at right back for Tottenham, scoring two goals and assisting two more as we hammered them 4-0.

Everyone always knew Souness would be a failure from day one. We knew he would fall out with our best players and sell them at cut price, but I wasn't expecting him to ruin us so quickly! Some of the quotes he has come out with are unbelievable, the man doesn't believe in tactics, he doesn't believe in wingers either saying he wanted 'working wide players'. He demonstrated his man management skills when he said "I don't want a team full of James Milners"! Great way to shatter of the hopes of one of the club's bright young talents. When we were knocked out of both cups he basically blamed it on the youngsters we had out.

Souness is going to be selling about half of our first team players all at cut-price. Souness' days are numbers and he knows it, these are desperate measures by a man with little to lose - if it all goes tits up he will walk away from us and not give a fuck. We are becoming a charity like Leeds were, except Leeds were about 80M in debt whereas Newcastle are financially sound!

Many Newcastle fans have talked about not renewing their season ticket but while they talk a good fight it's expected about 95% of them will have renewed by the deadline tommorow. It's a real shame that we want to support the club but know that the chairman is laughing his head off at us, and most people are far too proud to boycott the games the way tens of thousands of Marseille fans did last season.

Posted by Ian on Jun-12-2005 14:25:

aye can understand that totaly, reminds me of the man utd situation in the fact if ppl dont renew someone will always be there to take their seats, so it doesn't acheieve anything.

As for Robert, I think he'd do well as our front 3 have less defence, his distribution along with Diouf or stelios on the right will be great for davies, and obviously davies is fouled a fair bit, leaving us with someone who could hammer freekicks in. Obv it's not a done deal, but I honestly would rate it as good signing

How much is Bolton buying Robert for?

Posted by Turner on Jun-12-2005 18:24:

Souness is a fucking cock!

Reports are that were interested in Viduka. What the fucks going on?

Souness has fucked this team and theres no chance anything will get better unless the manager is gone.

Souness u twat.

Posted by raveed on Jun-12-2005 22:54:

i take back everything i said about souness ... i used to think hes actually one hell of a manager with his no nonsense approach but hes proving now to be a useless piece of shite

Vladmir Smicer set to go to Bordeaux on free transfer.
Too bad he didn't pan out in EPL. IMO he's better as a centre midfield than offensive midfield and he's also been injured and out of groove.

yeah the days of Newcastle competing with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U are gone in my opinion. Kluivert never really got a look in with Souness and with key players like Robert, Bellamy and Bowyer all gone, Newcastle will continue to struggle.

Newcastle is still a club with massive potential if it was managed properly. Last year Newcastle were announced the 9th richest club in the world. It can boast the second largest stadium in the country selling out every home game for 14 successive seasons now. Only one club can boast that type of attendance record in modern times - Manchester United, 8 times Premiership winners and a host of other meaningless trophies won along the way to add to their haul. Newcastle fans spend more money following their club than any other set of supporters, despite failing to win a single domestic trophy since 1955. You could consider Newcastle one of the most underachieving sides in existence, but it has also been a story of remarkable success.

One only need to cast their thoughts back to the 24th of April 1992 to get a real sense of just how successful Newcastle has been. In the last minute at the end of the season we were staring at relegation to the old third division for the first time in our history, we needed a win but the seconds were running out. Right at the death David Kelly unleashed a rocket of a shot which sent thousands of fans pouring onto the pitch. Had David Kelly skewered that shot wide, today Newcastle may not exist. Owing millions to the banks, losing thousands a day and with a team full of bairns and cast-offs, it was feared that the powers that be might pull the plug. Three years later and Newcastle were at the top of Premiership looking down at Manchester United and the following season broke the world transfer record to bring Shearer back to his hometown club.

What the club has achieved since 1992 is nothing short of remarkable and a testament to the potential of the club. Back then it was a pipe dream to rub shoulders with the likes of Spurs, Everton and Villa - today we tower over them. We may have finished below them in the League the season just gone, but in every other sense, they lag way behind Newcastle in almost all aspects.

Indeed has there been a more successful club over the last decade given the leaps we have had to make in almost every single department? Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal et al were giants of the game well before Kelly's goal sealed our future and were winning trophies as they always have done and always will do while we were battling to keep our heads above the water. They haven't been to the depths we have. They have always operated at the top. We weren't even a sleeping giant in those dark old days, we were in a coma and the life support was about to be switched off. To even consider joining their elite status never mind muscling in on it as we have done, was beyond the dreams of all Newcastle fans at the time.

Who knows what the next 13 years will bring? That elusive trophy will come eventually, it has to. The following clubs have all won something since Newcastle last did:

Villa, Spurs, Everton, Sunderland, Oxford, Coventry, Luton, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, Man City, West Ham, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Leeds United, Stoke City, Watford, Wimbledon and more.

Many of those have fallen by the wayside but we're still here. Keep the faith!

Jon Stead to Sunderland. I really like the lad as he works hard and he did well in Blackburn, considering how much Blackburn is weak offensively.

Andy O'Brien to Portsmouth. Newcastle is doing some housecleaning I guess.

Posted by Turner on Jun-13-2005 19:30:

Some house cleaning, without anyone coming in.

If he fails to win the Intertoto cup and has a very poor start to the season there's no doubt he'll get the sack. The only problem is Shepherd will probably sack him just after the transfer window closes like he did with Bobby Robson!

He wants the next manager to be from Newcastle and as Steve Bruce seems quite settled at Birmingham (and is a shit manager anyway) then it seems highly likely that Shearer will become our next manager despite having absolutely no management experience at all. He won't have built up a team of backroom staff either and would probably inherent the current shite we have.

I suppose the best bit of news is that Souness only has a year left on his contract. Unless he does something special in the next 12 months I think we'll have seen the last of him then and can look to the future!

It hurts doesn't it?

Even we can win something nowadays

Parker to newcastle, cant be to disappointed by that move?

I still think souness will turn newcastle around. RObert has got a serious attitude problem, and cant defend for shit. I think it was the FA cup semi final where you got destroyed down the left.

Robert has no interest in crossing the half way line to defend, thats not acceptable for a left wing. Every other left wing in premierships tries to defend.

Kluivert didnt cut it, wages were far too. He seems to be drifting from club to club just after money. AS bellamy, how can newcastle fans want him back after what he did?!

As for that scummer bowyer, he belongs in prision, not on a football pitch.

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-14-2005 14:23:

Parker would be an excellent signing, I think we're buying him at the right time to be honest. He was unlucky to break his foot at Chelsea and he was never going to dislodge Makelele and Lampard, but looked quality when he played against us in the Carling Cup.

The media think we'll beat Everton to Emre's signature as well. Inter Milan say they've accepted a bid of around 4M from a couple of English clubs. Moyes flew to Milan apparently on the weekend but Souness is going to try and tie Emre down to a deal this week, although his wages will be a problem.

Regarding the Carling Cup, Babayaro was playing with an injury at left back and came off at half time for N'Zogbia. He could barely run for most of the first half and was the main reason we were destroyed down our left side. Butt was the biggest disgrace of that game though, couldn't be bothered at all, directly assisted one of Man Utd's goals and at the end of the game when all our players went to applaud the fans Butt ran off down the tunnel.

My gut feeling is Newcastle will do better next season but still not good enough. Thinking with my head and not my heart I'd predict us for upper-mid table. All depends who we bring in and who Souness falls out with.

It looks like Bowyer could be on his way to Birmingham. Bolton and Portsmouth are battling to get Robert, no idea which he'll go to yet. Charlton are interested in Ambrose, we're apparently willing to sell.

i think so as well... however i think you guys desperately need a striker ...definately your #1 priority this season ... shearers almost a fossil and with bellamy and kluivert gone theres no hitman quite of the caliber that the geordies require ... parker is a fantastic buy no doubt but it is very surprising that you guys have not been linked with any strikers so far

Posted by Turner on Jun-14-2005 16:59:

To be honest, i can't see why we might come to a halt with Emre due to his wages, hes on about 55grand a week, yet we pay 60grand for dyer.

A striker is the number one priority I agree.

I think Souness may be planning on playing Dyer up front next season, he's started to find his scoring touch and provides us with the pace we've lacked since Bellamy, but he's injury prone and we still need a 20 goal a season striker.

We've been linked with a few strikers, some good and some not so good, but nothing concrete yet.

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-14-2005 18:45:

Robert has chosen Portsmouth over Bolton and signed a 3 year deal.

Still no mention of the fee.

Portsmouth fans are very happy, calling it their biggest ever signing.

Posted by raveed on Jun-14-2005 18:54:

good that means robert is guaranteed first team football next year ...i lost count of the amount of times i lost points in fantasy football because fuckhead souness didnt start robert
