I have to speak up on this one...

If he still knows how to mix properly, then why wouldnt he do that?

I mean really... who has a SKILL like that and then doesnt use it because they are "raking in millions"?

I am not arguing with you at all, but what I am saying is, that if that actually IS the case, I think it is even more pathetic than not being able to mix well because of lack of skill.

After all these years of mixing for this guy, and the RIDICULOUS # of shows per year he plays... mixing should be like BREATHING to him.

And of course that doesnt mean I am expecting a perfect mix every time, but it is just a simple fact that the more and more someone does something, the better and better they should get at it( and anyone in a #1 position in ANYTHING, should be at the top top top of their game, in EVERY aspect, period.) ... i really doubt he trainwrecks because he "doesn't care" , I think he trainwrecks because he is obviously a mediocre mixer AT BEST. (and this is not to say he doesnt have great stage presence or awesome track selection, which I will touch on in a sec)

this is nothing new of Tiesto really.

I have been listening to Dance music since 1997 and I have listened to Tiesto since the launch of his career, not to mention seeing him at RAVES ever before ANY club would ever take him, or DJs like him...

Anyway, if you have a decent ear, and listen back to Nyana, and literally ALL of of the Magik Muzik CD series (#1-6 or 7??), there are terrible mixes ALL over the place. I'm not saying I didnt like the CDs, because track selection wise, at the time, they were top notch cds, but even then, he was technically.. ehhhh

The bottom line is, he's a good looking Dutchee with charisma, usually solid track selection, an insane marketing team and technically he is a C+ (imo) (Paul Van Dyk is an A)

AND, the guy is obviously a champ, because its not just like any person could withstand all the pressure of his position, and all the shows/ travel he has to do throughout the year.

I totally commend his endurance and passion.

BUT, there has to be more to being #1 than endurance and passion.

#1 are big shoes to fill

I just wish if he is gonna keep hogging the #1 slot, that he would live up to that in all areas.

People in the #1 should be setting the bar, and setting it HIGH.

not just worrying about how many people they can pull per show for how much $$$.

I'm not bashing at all, I am just telling it like it is, in my eyes.

I don't dislike Tiesto, but I have not been impressed lately.

The show Saturday was nothing special to me, the track list was a bit all over the place..

BUT, I give Element and Co. mad props for pulling off this first ever in the u.s. production

I think they have balls for taking it on, and I think they tried to carry out their vision as best they could.

I would have liked to see some white lasers (full color) or some other muticolor lasers in there, instead of just the same green ones that you see everywhere, but oh well

I would have also liked to see a couple more projection screens/video screens, instead of just the one huge one way behind him at the back of the stage..
(the sound btw, imo, was pheonomenal)

And the lights being synched better would have been cool, BUT overall, they pulled it off.

TIESTO himself, on the other hand, did not pull it off, IMO.

All I am saying is.. that if it was me behind those decks.. and there were 10,000+ people there to see me in a country that was not even my own.. well, I would have been a lot more excited than that... I would have been crowd surfing, jumping up and down and dancing... and showing my fans how appreciate and happy I was to play for them..

not to mention that my mixing would be on.. even if i was not normally a good mixer.. um hello, its called practicing, and i think a dj has that responsibility if that many people are paying that much to see that show

Tiesto looked bored most of the time, giving a few of his cute smiles and a couple dance moves here and there.. but other than that....

Anyway, I really could go on forever, and this wasn't some thesis with a intro, body conclusion, lol, it's just my random free thoughs about some of the things I have been reading in this thread.

If you love Tiesto, great, if you don't, super

I guess the bottom line is everyone has a different idea of what #1 should be

and it seems alot of people think that Tiesto meets that criteria

go tiesto!

.... i'd still love to battle him one day, i think we would have fun :P

If you look at the tracklist he played "like a Waterfall" right next to it so ATRC was, if anything, a bonus with Jes being there for the other track.

Finally this is my Party report.

Well, I wasn't expecting too much from Tiesto In Concert in LA either because I have seen Tijs plenty of times or just because I got tired of an EDM scene but in the end all trip turned out to be magical. Necessary to say that last couple of months I literally lived in the office and this trip was a real escape for me. Thanks Michelle, Payman and Matt for making me so excited that I couldn't fall asleep the night before my departure.

My plane was scheduled for 6.45 am on Friday and I landed in LAX right on time - 9.30 am local time. Gotta love Delta Song! Cab fare to The Standard downtown was $45 which is not bad at all.
My friend got to LA a few days earlier and that morning he was already waiting for me in the hotel. It was really nice to see him again.

Half of a day I spent walking around downtown area and checking local sightseeing - City Hall, Walt Disney Hall with Patina, El Pueblo de Los Angeles with it's Olivera Street, Fashion and Jewelry districts, Pershing Square and absolutely amazing LA's new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles. LA made an impression of a city with tons of fountains and no people.

I ended up going to the roof pool in my hotel and spent the entire evening there. What a great place!!! Colorful couches and water mattresses, great pool and absolutely gorgeous people. Very chick pool-lounge. For those you never been there I highly recommend. It sucks that they charge $15 to get in but it's so worth it.

Later that night D. and I met up with Michelle and went out for a dinner to "the most popular LA restaurant" (according to Zagat) - Caf? Bizou in Santa Monica. Later we went back to the hotel for the additional drinks. Thanks Michelle for a really good evening. I wish we could hang out more but it's impossible to schedule everything in one weekend.

Saturday was a major day. Almost all day I was hanging out with my friends in Hollywood, checking Walk of Fame and Melrose Avenue with its shops.

But at 20.30 we were already parking our car by LA Sports Arena. Show was supposed to start at 21.30.
Thanks my friends for a VIP guest list for me and some of my friends. I really appreciate that! I don't know how the regular admission entrance was, but it looked pretty scary from the outside - those endless lines would drive me crazy. As for us - we got our bracelets with no line and went straight to the Arena.
Those who got VIP tix won only in a few ways - faster entrance, free drinks and couches to sit. But VIP area itself was a huge disappointment for me - there was no ability to see Tijs from that side, so I had to go to the regular floor and it was great. Crowd was happy and excited!!! Luckily for me I could squeeze myself right in front of the DJ booth and Tijs didn't make us wait for too long. Even though the arena wasn't yet full he jumped out from the backstage and as everybody knows started with Magical Circus.

In overall I enjoyed the night. I really liked the gymnasts set and Jes performance, "Just be" girl looked really hot but her voice wasn't strong enough to handle this track. And this is where the magic has begun and the whole arena started singing along with Angela Taylor. Place got crowded very fast and only after a few tracks when I turned around I couldn't see a free spot - floor and the lower seat area of the Arena were packed. 9 500 - 10 000 people were attending this event as I found out later.

My Highlights of the night:
Tijs! Thanks for "The Darkside of the Moon". I know -a fact that it's my fave track wasn't dominant for Tijs to make a decision on a track list for that night but I got a few winks from him while it was playing. He knew it was my fave.

Chris!!!! Chris, I admire your talent and I think Tijs is really lucky to have somebody like you work with him. Your visuals were absolutely awesome. Great job!

Meeting some of LA TA. Sorry guys that I haven't had more time to spend with you and get to know you better. Michelle was hot hot hot!!!
Security people who started to bring water for whose who were standing in the first few rows and didn't have any access to drinks. I have never seen security be more concern not only about the order but about people and event itself. They made it so much better! LA Sports arena got an A+ crew.

Moment when the show was over and Chris came with a half empty bottle of Moet. We were passing this bottle around making our little celebration party.

And
Erwin Z. It was 3 in the morning. I just left Arena and were driving back to the hotel when I received a phone call from a strangely familiar number. I love you Erwin. The only one regret I had that night was you missing that show. I truly wish you were there with me.

We left a venue at 3 and went straight to the hotel. I knew there was an afterparty going on but we were too tired to go out. I hoped everybody who went to see Second Sun had fun. I met Adam the next morning in the lobby. We had a really nice chat and he promised to come back to NYC soon.

Sunday was a lazy day. Guys were relaxed because everything was accomplished and went smooth. We got a very late brunch on the terrace and then went to the pool. A bit after 3 pm Marques Wyatt came to "kidnap" me for a couple of hours and we drove to Santa Monica. Did I say I adore Marques? I had a really nice evening with him and shortly after he dropped me by the hotel, a limo was waiting outside to pick me and my friend to the airport. We had to catch our flight to NYC at 22.00.
This is it. Needless to say that the flight was exhausting and I was completely dead when I got to the office on Monday morning. Wrecked but Happy. It was a good trip!

Thanks to:
Tijs for a great show!
All my friends I have met and haven't met - Payman, Matt, Michelle, Herbert, Hong, Elizabeth and others.
LA Sports Arena Team for being so attentive and polite. They were the best!

Cheers Sveta. Great read and fantastic review.

Posted by sr22 on Aug-24-2005 06:35:

hahahaha im so glad i flew to NYC for PVD instead of this shit. Tiesto is just money hungry, thus accepting these acts paying him to be part of his show, not to mention being under the same manager and doing these lameass gigs. Seeing the tracklisting of his show makes me cry and laugh at the same time.

Such the trendy mainstream trance that attracts the tiesto followers, rather than putting down some quality shit that would impress the real tranceaddicts of this forum.

I am so glad that you had such a woderful time here in La!!! I had a Great time On Friday! I am also happy that you got to meet some more La TA's as well at the show.

Posted by liverpoolken on Aug-24-2005 07:32:

i ended up going to this event to hang out my friends/brothers and to hear some good music. $75 later i have learned that trance really doesn't do for me what it used to. to quote my favourite movie, "i didn't feel anything." still had a good time, but i will probably not be seeing tiesto again (atleast not at this price). i'd much rather have seen sasha in that setting instead.

Posted by hoangad on Aug-24-2005 07:38:

LOL!!! WTF!?!?!?!?!?

Posted by ms_nugs on Aug-24-2005 07:43:

I'm pissed. My whole report just disappeared. ??!

I think in the end Tiesto will fade himself out until there are only the ones he began with. I rather him not be #1 , especially when the only way is up. I'm glad to have come out, and caught him in Cal. It was fun to see how you West Coast peoples do it. IT was hella fucking cool, seeing people from Europe, Asia, Mexico. Tiesto has the best fucking fans. And although his set definitely wasn't perfection, you definitely felt a massive production going on. I think Tiesto is a completely humble person. May he will always find his inspiration.

All in all 4 hours was a tease, the asian drummers was off the hook, Jes came out with crazy energy,a snippet of Southern Sun mixed in and faded out(I swear), I danced my ass off, the guy next to me kept jumping on my toes, a couple tracks broke my heart, confetti, Adagio For Strings.Over.

I had fun, wasn't like the first times I caught him long ago. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.

sr22: Excuse me?

I have read all of the reviews and 9/10 of them had said Tiesto had a great tracklisting. It looks pretty massive to me i dont know about you

Most of the show reviews have been great, so why dont you shut it already cause you obviously have no clue.

As for his mixing. Who really gives a shit. Tiestos been like this since the dawn age. The reason he is so big is because he plays what people want to hear, BOTTOM LINE.

I would pick his banging track selection and below average mixing over armins Shitty ASOT Garbage with solid mixing anyday.

Posted by sr22 on Aug-24-2005 17:42:

the people that i've met on this forum, and people that post regularly, thats who's word i take into account, and out of the ones i've read on here and out of the onees i've heard in person, said the show was great, but him actually being a DJ and mixing and track selection, just sucked. If you want a circus act fine, he probabl did a good job because thats what TIC has become.

He does play what the people want to hear, like as the rush comes...which is how old now and how played out in EVERYONE's live sets...awesome.

And whoever said tiesto is humble, read his interviews and some of the things he's said in the press. haha
