ok maybe i exagerated a little :P lol. most of the stuff we do in class is very basic stuff to get our heads rolling. iv talked to a lot of graduates in my program who have started workin who said that 75-80% of what you need in the workforce is learned on the job or in training. might not be for all programs.

Useless or not, a lot of workplaces do look for that shiny piece of paper you pay good money for.

Well, maybe except mine since I'm in liberal arts

That seems a little pointless to be there, not for knowledge, but just to be there for a piece of paper. Yes I udnerstand depending on the program, but you shouldnt be taking something that wont apply to you later on.

My program teaches lots of things I won't need in my career. I have a job now, just need the certificate to go full-time. Trust me, I was paying attention when I needed to be.

Well i was born in Belgium... lived in Toronto once for 2 years (grade 9 and 10) and liked it. I moved around the rest of the time because of my dad's job (he's a diplomat with the Belgian Embassy). Came back to study in Canada because my boyfriend lives here and it's convenient that way

They don't get paid alot....and some of them have a baby and mortgages to take care of.
Think of teachers who's spouse is on maternity leave, or who both the husband and wife work as teachers.....think they're enjoying this?

Posted by Yohan on Mar-15-2006 19:28:

I'm not sure if I caught this.

Is this a legal or an illegal strike?

Posted by TO guy on Mar-15-2006 19:29:

its legal

WRONG... My teacher told me before the strike they are getting paid $500 a week.

They also only have enough money to support this for 2 weeks.

by union regulations teachers are required to walk the line for 20 hours a week for the wonderful pay of $200 a week. As well they must continue to make full payments to their pension fund or they take the risk of becoming ineligable.

My father is one of the teachers on strike. Tomorrow he is going to Queen's park to participate in a rally to get the government to legislate them back to work. Believe it or not, some of them just don't care and want to be back teaching instead of picketing.

A message to students from Anne Sado,
President of George Brown College
Re: Semester Completion Strategy
March 15, 2006

Dear Philip,

I know you are concerned about the impact of the faculty strike on your education. We are, too. That's why we're developing Semester Completion Plans to ensure that you can meet your essential program requirements, regardless of the length of the strike.

Each student's situation is different. The plan for your program will depend on your circumstances, programs of study and the length of the strike. In most cases, graduating students will be able to complete their course requirements within two weeks following the end of the strike. For other students, we'll make adjustments to the balance of your program so that you won't be disadvantaged.

The plans we are making are based on two principles: Academic Integrity and Fairness to Students. To ensure academic integrity over a compressed classroom timeframe, student success will be measured by your ability to demonstrate achievement of outcomes rather than by measuring the quantity of material covered. Reasonable accommodations will be made to access material that would have otherwise been covered in class including deadline extensions, remediation and alternative procedures for evaluation.

Of course, you are still responsible for your own learning. That means continuing to study and complete assignments during the strike and making sure you can demonstrate that you can meet the essential outcomes of your course as described in your course outline. We will work with you to ensure you are ready for work or your next semester at college.

Members of our academic team will be contacting you shortly but we encourage you to visit the website at www.georgebrown.ca, WebCT and/or telephone your department managers using the listed phone numbers on the Faculty Labour Negotiations section of the web. We are open and available to support you.

It is possible that the strike will impact the timing of the end of your semester. In that event, faculty members and chairs will develop individual solutions for students who have prior commitments related to work, travel or other extenuating circumstances. Should this extension to the semester be required, you will be notified by the end of the month.

We continue to urge OPSEU (the union that represents college faculty) to return to the bargaining table and we remain optimistic that we can settle this dispute. Our commitment is to you and helping you achieve your success.

Sincerely,

Anne Sado, President

I recieved this email from the school.....bs
