MR. NEMOSIS Give me examples of good trance 2 u
this thread still delivers the goods
Ok. Here are some of the uplifting trance tracks that I have played over the years that stood out for me and captured the amount of uplifting emotion & huge dancefloor drive that I look for. A couple new ones thrown in as well.
Envio - For You
Syndica - Aria Epica (Signalrunners rmx)
Nitromethane - Time to die (Seraque mix)
Tilt - Invisible (Lost Tribe rmx)
Art Of Trance - Madagascar (Push rmx)
Tiesto - Urban Train
John Vesta - Gull
Alibi - Eternity
Pulser - My Religion
Mind One - Star For Me (Pulser rmx)
Randy Katana - In Silence (txitxarro mix)
Misja Helsloot - First Second (Signum Rmx)
Solar Stone - Seven Cities (AVB remix)
Yahel - Voyage (Tiesto Rmx)
Ambassador - The Fade
Tekara - Breathe In Me (Lost Tribe rmx)
Nu Nrg - Le Mirage
Nu Nrg - Connective
Nu Nrg - Free fall
Nu Nrg - Take your air
Basic Dawn - Pure Thrust (Nu Nrg mix)
Second Sun - Playground (Nu Nrg Mix)
Mirco De Govia - Voller Sterne (Super 8 mix)
Above & Beyond pr. Tranquility Base - Surrender (Original Mix)
whirlpool vs octagen - alaska (filo and peri remix)
Alucard presents 49th Line - Blue On Blue (Octagen Dub)
Salt Tank - eugina (salt tank's reactivation mix)
Chicane & Salt Tank - Leaving Town (Mea Culpa Remix)
Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia (PVD Mix)
Insigma - Avalon
Mr sam vs tim coltrane - the tribute (original mix)
Many of these tracks I was fortunate enough to be the first to bring them to crowds here in Vancouver and around the province. Should have seen the reaction of 3000+ ppl hearing Urban Train for their first time in 2001.
Unreal, especially on my end to be playing it to them. I'm playing that same festival one month from now, now in their 9th year.. though this time they aren't too warm to the idea of trance and I would not have been asked to play such a big slot if I was playing trance.

I am 17 years old. When I first discovered trance I remember sitting in my bedroom listening to an Oakenfold essential mix, with tears streaming down my face and my legs unable to stop moving. To me that was pretty much it, I was hooked. HOWEVER, since that time my tastes have digressed into all EDM, most notably progressive house/breaks, and tech house.
These days they would come to mind if I was asked my favourite genre. Why? because today, compared with '99, trance is a dirty word to the average person. There has been too much poor quality production over the years and it has perpetually tarnished the reputation of our 'guilty pleasure'. In fact most people cannot believe that I am so passionate about this cheesey 'doof doof' music.
They only hear the cheese, because to find the quality you are forced to dig very deep. I think everyone who has posted on this thread will agree that there is still awesome trance out there, I don't even need to stipulate that. What I do believe we must consider is in what magnitude we wish trance to be 'alive' in. Are we seeking Trance to become the next pathetic electro house commercial rubbish that gets ignorant young people loose? Or do we just want an improvement in overall quality of trance specifically for addicts like ourselves? Frankly, If the former occurs, Trance is off the agenda for me.
However I do feel that there is a requirement, if trance is going to transgress and become successful in the manner of 99' again, elements of other electronic genres must be phazed in. For example, the deep production technques of progressive dance music, and dare I say it electro style synths, just to keep things fresh. The fact is, most of the synth lines and melodies that connotate uplifting trance have been exhausted, and producers should go about creating trance that is emotionally powerful in a more intricate way. I think time is the real key here, producers need to take the time to make high quality music that works on more than the level of bassline build up and melody.
Of course I am just an idiot 17 year old kid from Australia, but I do love music. And I love trance. And I'd love nothing more than to see it continue to prosper. In order for it to do that, a more profound approach to creating the music should be implemented, more so than the halcyon days of Paul Oakenfold.

Trance isn't dead. Nothing more to say TBH. If you feel it's dead move on to another genre. The same thing was discussed one year ago (and two years ago etc.). It's like keep saying that PC gaming is dead, when clearly it isn't. So please, get over with it,we really got bored with this thing every year

oh come on 200+ replies after two weeks? You guys need some new things to talk about.
Last night was the halfway point of 2006, the year is now 2006.5. I went to a new years themed party last night which was a lot of fun, John B was there and he played some of those tracks off that "Trance n Bass" CD we were talking about in 2002.
What I wonder, is if there is any nice trance to look forward to in 2006.5.
I remember there being "trance is dead" topics in 2001 when suburban train was just coming out, I remember people being dissapointed with "In my memory". Before everyone was into ASOT people were still saying trance is dead. It was a weird time, you posted the word "God" and it was pretty much universally accepted accross this website that you were referring to PvD. But you istened to radio one and they would be like "he plays trance, if you're into that sort of thing", wording it as if it was some sort of dirty fetish or something that only wierd people get into.
I think we underestimate how much of this decline was caused by things that are outside of our own control though. Trance was pretty much ridiculed into the shadows by the big dj's of other styles. The economy was much stronger and trance made a great celebratory kind of music that was more appropriate for the mindset of people in 1999 than it is for people today. There were massive marketing campaigns that just trashed on the music because they thought we looked stupid, at a time when we decided to stop caring about how we looked. Sure the music went down hill as well, but that was partially a result of these changing trends and marketing campaigns which puched people into favoring a different sound which alienated alot of us who were happy with the way the sounds were going before external forces intervened.
It happens to all music though, this little scene of ours is just a weird mix of passion, fashion, fads, money, drugs, sex, technology and people of all sorts, nobody knows whats going on.
C-Quence Pres. Assure - Enemy Territory
I never saw a topic where someone else than me mentioned this track (although I don't read all...)
I would say this could easily be a 1999 track. It simple but massive.
Is has one of the most uplifting melodies of Trance tracks.
The distortioned sound, I haven't heard for several years, is amazing. And the bass........

So, to me even in 2006 trance is still alive and kickin'
By the way. How many amazing tracks you need to say that Trance is (still) Alive (again)? 10, 25, 50, 100....
Are you looking hard enough?

| Originally posted by DJ NEMESIS well, first off it's nice to have more than one every month or every 2 months. Secondly, when you've got no trance night to go out to because the nights shut down due to lack of support, and when people quit playing/producing or switch to another genre due to lack of support/appreciation, then regardless of what YOU are finding or want to believe you're going to be stuck to enjoying a trance scene that consists mainly of your bedroom and your computer. If you happen to live in europe/uk in places where things are at their best, then consider yourself lucky. But for the rest of the world it's a different reality. |

Yeah ok. 2006 trance is dead? nah
One song: Armin Van Buuren - Sail
What makes trance, trance is emotion it brings to you as you listen. When I listen to Sail, it uses alot of minor and major chords that really send you into that trance state.
I must admit that there is a lot of SHIT out there called trance as of these days. But I believe that trance lives on and is actually greater than it has ever been before.
When I listne to 1999-2003 stuff, it jsut doesnt have the energy that trance has today. Due to software and computers being able to handle more effects and instruments playing at one time, trance has been able to reach energy levels in the sound that they couldnt in 1999
Trance has CHANGED. Trance LIVES on. It has not DIED. There are actually alot more people getting into trance these days. Sure there is an extremely distinctive difference of trance in the 90's and todays trance, but EVERY genre changes and evolves. Listen to hip-hop when it first started, then listne to it now. Difference much? OF COURSE. Cause if it still sounded the same, there would be nothing new to listne to.
Now i know that trance sounds alot the same nowadays, but it did back in 1999 too. Cause uhh yeah let's jsut talk about the "Supersaw." Every single damn song had a saw in it in 1999. I'm not sayin it to bash them, but nowadays trance is doing something different and takes you to differnet places like in Tiesto's Acient History track. That song took me to a Jungle setting where it would seem that you could be hunting tigers with a tribe of indians or something. Trance is doing differnet thigs these days then the same shit over nad over.
I really liked Tiesto's Nyana CDs because it took trance to a differnet level. There was rarely a supersaw lead in those CDs.
ASOT 2006 CD 2: In The Club really hit with some really good pumping Trance tracks.
I think DJ Nemesis is on crack. honestly. He speak about "taking a step outside" and shit, but I honestly dont think he has practiced what he is preaching. Cause if he did, then he wouldn't be arguing this at all. Trance is still very much alive and still kickin. It's jsut different than it used to be. And if he knew anything than he'd know that trance actually appeals to a larger crowd now then it ever has before.
So everyone, take a steop outside...a step into trance.
And all hail Armin Van Buuren's track Sail. I basically creamed my pants the first time i heard it.
No way am I reading through all the replies right now (maybe later) but the problem as I see it is basically lack of creativity in the scene.
The one thing that strikes me as the major difference between electronic music 10 years ago and electronic music now was that back then, everyone was always talking about the future, the future of music and the possibilities. Now you hardly ever hear that. People are either living in the past or too much in the present, no one thinks about what's possible for the future any more. No one wants to create new sounds and be the initiator of the next big style. Look at all the great genres that were invented in the 70s (disco, industrial) and 80s (techno, house, electro) and 90s (trance, hardcore, DNB) and compare that to what's come out in the 00s (raggaeton, hardstyle, makina)... it doesn't even come close.
I don't know why electronic music started off so good and suddenly came to a halt creativity-wise in 2000 (I think this would make a great discussion), but maybe it is all the DJ worship. That DJ list has barely changed in the last 6 years and you just can't rely on the same dozen or so people to be introducing the majority of new material into the scene. We need to change it up a bit. Cause right now it's stale, stagnated, nothing new - that's what's killing the music.
My $2.00.
Ok reading into this a little further... the whole amateur thing mentioned a few pages back has nothing to do with it. A lot of electronic music was founded by amateur musicians who really didn't know much about what they were doing, just fooling around and happily came upon something that sounded new and great. That was a great thing because anybody could just go home and produce their own tracks, then give it to a DJ to play and see how the crowd responded. If it was close, but not quite great, it just inspired them to try harder. Even more than that, it inspired others who thought they could do better to start making their own music! So the whole professionalism vs amateurism argument is completely invalid I think. I for one think amateur musicians are great for the music scene.
^^^^^ agreed
Trance will always be alive , its the quality of the tracks have gone down hill , its needs to freshen up.
When you go to buy records(or digital downloads) these days how many do you buy? as compared to a few years ago?
For me probably buy 1-3 tracks a month these days, use to be 20-30 tracks.
Sadly trance is such a dirty word these days but it will never die out completely.

. It uses 4 lowering notes, that's plain afwul. Has Armin forgot to write melodies or what? It's hard to believe he's the one who wrote communication, his only quality tune
