The whole Wii debate has absolutely nothing to do with this either, I'll be the first to acknowledge how shit 90% of the catalog for that system is.

Resistance was not only a bland looking, run-of-the-mill FPS with a story that on first glance was "Huh, could be neat" but upon further inspection played out about as well as the recent Area 51 release. It's multi-player was nothing that other games haven't done far better for years, and the only reason it was reviewed as highly as it was is because it was one of the only first generation PS3 games that was worth a pinch of shit at all.

Okay, okay, maybe I inadvertently stuffed some words in your mouth there. Although you ARE critical of the FPS genre, you have every right to be considering the fact that it's probably the most crowded genre in the gaming industry these days. And my Wii mention was only an example that there are far worse games then Resistance, but everyone has a taste. I'm just a sucker for FPS games in general, it's take a lot for me to hate one.

I used to be as well, I just haven't seen anything really interesting in all that many of them for a long, long time - and with TF2 out now, it really doesn't seem as though the likelihood of anyone coming up with anything all that interesting is pretty slim.

I will concede that there are definitely far, far worse games than Resistance out there - but it also didn't warrant all the 8's and 9's it received from reviewers. In my mind, it wasn't a good game by any measuring stick, and fell even flatter because it was done in a genre that made it's failings that much more obvious.

And as for me being a huge critic of FPS in general - well, you hit the nail on the head.

There are just too many of the ******s out there, and more than half of them never warranted release in the first place.

This is becoming more true every passing year. It seems the best way to show off a system's capabilities is to release an FPS. Xbox started this trend with Halo, the 360 continued it with Call of Duty 2, and now PS3 with Resistance. I'm guessing it's because it appeals the best to casual audiences.

RPG's usually require a lot of time...meaning no casual audience.

Puzzle games require thinking...a lot of dumb people out there, and many of them belong in the casual audience, meaning less chance for them to buy one.

Sports games fit perfectly with the casual audience...but a lot of hardcore gamers hate sports in the first place, so no go for them on that one, that cuts out the hardcore market.

Racing games are a mixed bag...depends on if its Ridge Racer/Burnout, or Gran Turismo.

But an FPS game...well, most of them require absolutely no thinking, and since they are games that contain content that can appeal to everyone, there is no segregation of the market...everybody can buy into it, which will lead to greater sales/revenue.

I'm not sure how to categorize fighting games...they go well with casual and hardcore gamers alike, and yet not a single fighting game has reached Halo/Call of Duty/Half-Life popularity status since maybe the Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat days.

Found this interesting...Aaron Greenberg, Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live had these words to say. Sure, he's a voice of Microsoft and will likely be throwing insults rather than compliments, but even I, a PS3 fan, can agree with what he has to say.

"I know a lot of folks enjoy watching the console wars and we would never underestimate our competition. But answer to your question specifically, didn't Sony promise all of this last year including Home as well? We have been fighting Sony's promises from the day we entered the market and if you remember at that time it was all about PS2 being an online cybercity with partner announcements from the likes of RealNetworks and AOL. Then three years ago at E3 they showed what PS3 games would supposedly look like with the Killzone 2 video, that we are now learning will ship four years later. That means that we will have shipped Gears of War and Gears of War 2 before they can even get Killzone out the door," he said. "Think back to GDC 2007 when Sony promised to leap ahead in online with the Sony Home unveil. Here we are two years later and multiple delays for a product that appears to have little to no buzz. Where are the achievements? The friends list integration across all games? Where is the long-promised video store? Where are all the other products using and networking with their CELL chip? How come Blu-ray did not result in better games? What happened with Sixaxis and rumble? Where is the complete 1080p game library we were promised? If Blu-ray as they said would be such a catalyst to PS3 console sales, then why have PS3 sales over the past couple months not seen any lift since the format victory?"

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/

This merely supports the fact that Sony is A LOT of talk. They are an ambitious company, and they want to be pioneers. They introduced the first Playstation, which launched the game industry into the mainstream, and the Walkman, an item that revolutionized portable music. I guess this gave them what they think is the right to promise all sorts of ridiculously awesome stuff that, in the end, may have been impossible to come into fruition.

Ill attempt to address some of the points. First off, 3rd party developers do not necessarily reflect what Sony does. Whereas Sony implemented 1080P I believe in all of their games, other companies are not willing to since it will merely increase development costs. Sony cannot speak for everyone.

The online video store, I presume, has been purposely withheld in order for Sony to push the Blu-ray format as much as possible. Giving people the ability to download movies rather than buying hard copies at the store gives Blu-ray less of a chance of further penetration of the market.

Home has been hyped to all hell as being the god of online communities. With claims like this, Sony does NOT want to fuck up. In fact, another article just published recently admitted that Sony may have been TOO ambitious with Home:

"It seems even Sony knows when to admit it bit off a little more than it could initially masticate. In a short discussion with CVG, Reeves admitted they've "realized that maybe we were too ambitious with the non-gaming applications within Home, getting sponsors and stuff like that ... in that sense we were deserting gamers. So, we're concentrating on the gaming by launching games in Home, and attracting people who are into gaming in first -- instead of the Nike people, or Adidas people who are into fashion and not necessarily into gaming."

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/

...for them to fix that, it'll require more time in the shop, meaning more delays and pissed off gamers.

Well, I figure I shouldn't really talk about the process of getting my ps3 fixed in the gta4 thread, so I will discuss it in here.

Some of the experiences I've read online about Sony's Customer Support were different than what I have experienced (so far). I'm not sure if these people were rude, young, and/or actually had a terrible person assisting them, but it was simple and easy for me. I don't think anyone on TA has written about their PS3 repair experieces, so I'll update you guys on how the process goes from a competent TA user (or at least I consider myself somewhat competent lol)

I called up Sony yesterday in regards to fixing my ps3. I was only on hold for 5 minutes and the two people I dealt with (customer service & billing) were quick and competent. If my 60GB ps3 is unable to be repaired they'll be sending me another refurbed 60gb ps3. I believe the guy said I should have a ps3 sent back within 10-17 business days from when they receive my ps3. I also told him that my GTA4 disc was still in the console and he took note of that and said it will be returned along with my fixed/refurbed system. Repairing cost comes out to $153 and change after taxes if your system is not covered under warranty. I should receive the box to ship Sony the ps3 on Monday or Tuesday.

I have a COS Request # that I can use to check on the status of my ps3 either online or thru the phone. I'll post future updates & experiences later on in this thread.

Do you know how much it costs to fix, say, a 360, or even a Wii? Sounds like you've had at least a somewhat pleasant customer support experience (I wouldn't describe such an event as being anything better considering you ARE dealing with something you didn't want to break, lol), which sounds good so far.

I've actually never in my life had to deal with customer reps regarding gaming equipment, I've always lucked out somehow. My buddy has had to send his 360 in twice in the year and a half that hes owned it, but I don't know how much $$$ he had to spend (I think the first time it happened, the warranty covered it but I don't know about the second.)

Got a PS3 last week along with GTAIV, hasn't bricked yet!
Next up, Metal Gear Solid IV.
Admitidely, I spent this much money for these two games and GT5 only.

MGS4 will likely be THE reason a person picks up a PS3 this year; it is arguably the most anticipated title of 2008 (for the remainder of the year, GTA4 was probably the big one everyone was waiting for the entire year). Resistance 2 ranks high up there as well.

I had a problem with the bluray drive on my 80gb ps3 a few months after getting it. There were several people with the same problem (still under 1% failure is what I have heard) and the rumor was that it had something to do with one of the firmware updates. I called Sony and had a similar experience. No hassles. Sending me a box with a prepaid UPS label, etc. The box showed up about two or three days later and I kept it for about a week because I could still play Warhawk and other games on the hard drive. I finally sent it back and it took a total of 7 calender days to get a new (refurb) 80gb. The majority of that was spent in transit. They shipped the new one the day after getting my old one. I thought that was pretty amazing. It was under warranty too so no cost to me other than losing a week of Warhawk.

So, yeah, I read about the poor customer service as well, and that is not what I experienced whatsoever.

MGS4 Get!

We had a midnight launch at a BestBuy and a 24-hour Walmart, and I went to Walmart.
There were told to be 8 in stock, and I was 9th in line.
Came out to be true. Then headed over to the then closed BestBuy to find out the shipping truck never came and the customers had left empty handed.

Stayed up until morning to go to another Walmart that opened a 6AM.
8 in stock again, I was the sixth person to arrive right on time when they were about to bring out the boxes.

MGS4 Got!

MGSIV
1 act per day seems like a fair fitting of my schedule.
After 8 years of Sony's PR hype about Toy Story graphics, it's finally here!

c0r version: got my "fixed" ps3 back. verdict: fuck you sony, helen keller could make a better system.

Forgot to give an update 2 weeks ago. What I'm about to say has nothing really positive to it. In fact, I would not mind if someone dropped a bomb on Sony corporate headquarters right now.

My PS3 came back 2 weeks ago. I assume they fixed my ps3 and did not give me a refurb since it is the same serial number on the back. I haven't tried playing any games on it since I have been playing GTA4 on 360; Mainly watching bluray movies and streaming media to my ps3 with no problem.

Then MGS4 came out so I obviously had to pick it up and try it out. I install the necessary files on my hd for mgs4 then proceed to choose a difficulty level. The screen then changes to some random imaginary TV channels that you can change by pressing any button. (I am assuming this is the introduction to MGS4 or I just have a batshit crazy bluray disc) Within the first 20 seconds of this retarded imaginary TV bullshit, the video and audio freeze. I am still able to alternate between these retarded channels, but nothing is really going on. It's so fucking weird. There's no way out of this dumb imaginary TV crap. If I could just skip to the next scene I'd be thrilled. I've tried searching online to see if anyone has had similar problems but I have not encountered anyone else with a similar problem. I havent even been able to play the god damn fucking game. This is fucking ridiculous.

Anyway, I'm about to call up Sony and verbally rape them Mr. Hands style over the phone. I pay over $150 to fix my ps3 and the cocksucking piece of shit system can't even manage to play the most hyped game for ps3. Fuck you eat a dick Sony, you lost a true PS fan. thank the lord I got an xbox 360 last month.

yeah, like that thought never came across me, you fucking bellend. i've tried pressing x and other buttons for 15 minutes. i've left it on certain channels, including hideo 1 & 2, and nothing has happened. i've reinstalled the game and the same thing occurs. drown in a vat of AIDS

Lol that's weird I was so stoned when it happened I was confused but I watched some of the channels for a bit kept pressing x and l1 then it came on.

Posted by spc on Jun-14-2008 23:25:

it's really weird to explain. the audio stops and the video on all channels freezes... but i am still able to switch channels. it freezes at random times too... sometimes it can be 2 seconds into the channels, 15 seconds, or longer. i really have tried everything.

i'm just really fucking fed up with sony. i am not sure yet if it's my ps3 or i have a faulty disc. i already paid over $150 to get the god damn thing fixed.. if it's the ps3 then i can get it fixed again for free. i'm going to try my friends copy of mgs4 tomorrow to see if in fact it is my disc that is messed up.

Go into your settings and make sure you have it set up right. You should be able to see the meter move when you speak into it.

I could probably explain that better if I were at home and saw the menu options, but I'm sure you can figure it out.

GTAIV and GT5:Prologue work fine... I called Konami Tech Support today (I've been really busy with a lot of things so I had to put it off) and they told me that I could go to the gamestop where I purchased the game. They'll test it out on their ps3 and if the same problem occurs, they'll let me exchange it for another mgs4. Gonna head over there tomorrow after work.
