All this is saying is that the Access people did a good job programming presets... if presets are available for softsynths like this, then yes you can just dial them up and have them sound like that ready to go.

A preset is a preset, whether it is for a softsynth or a hardsynth...

Ok ...here it comes: Dumonde - Never look back
the lead synth which starts at the end of the break ( the typcial dumonde sound )...

are we talking about the main lead sound once the tune really kicks in?
i hope this is the one u mean.... its on A4

usually not with all the effect settings tho...which is very handy

hehe a late answer comming up...(haven't checked this thread for a while)

well no...I'm all out of luck so far....gave up about a month ago...but I got my suspicions that it's a waldorf Q that is used...but i'm not shure about that...that's just a guess so far

Posted by Etherium on Jan-15-2003 21:02:

Here's one: On Ayla's "Angel Falls", how can you get that gated angel sound they had in that one? (maybe formant synthesis ala Supernova II) If anyone has any ideas I'd like to know. I can get an angelic sound on a pad, but once I start playing it fast the effect kind of disappears.

ive just had a listen to the track cos its not one i was familiar with. do you mean the angel choir sort of thing? if so...that is just a vocal sample.....its definetly not supernova formant synthesis (that just creates wierd waveforms). gimme a tracktime when the sound first occurs and ill have another listen.

ps i cant hear a lot of gating on any part of the tune....u sure thats what u mean?

Posted by Etherium on Jan-19-2003 00:27:

Yeah, it had been a while since I had listened to it, I guess it is just a vocal sample.

Posted by Etherium on Jan-21-2003 22:46:

I'll try to get this thread back on topic:

One sound design tip I can offer is it to use an LFO on the arpeggio pattern with a sample & glide waveform.

Set the clock to 2/1 ratio or 4/1.

Where can i find such an arpeggiator ?

Posted by Etherium on Jan-25-2003 03:28:

Well, I can't speak about too many synths b/c I only have an Access Virus B. The Virus allows you to do this. My guess is a Supernova would as well. I've also heard that Logic Platinum has some interesting appregiators, but I don't think their patterns and swing times can be changed with LFO.

most soft synths will be useless for this.....supernova cant do it either

my virus c is my only synth that can

can anyone upload a demo mp3 about this arpeggiator sound ? would be great ...

Posted by Treo on Jan-26-2003 14:48:

Hmm, too bad i can't afford a virus then.. what about the arpeggiators of the more reasonably priced OB12 or JP8000 and others ? how are they compared to the virus arp ?

-Treo-

Posted by ms_bug on Jan-26-2003 17:35:

i think that those new novation synths (KS4 & KS5) could have some great arpeggiators too. there was some demo on future music cd... and ks4 is really cheap (around 1000$) for what it offers.

i tried the arp trick and it wasnt that useful...

most arps on synths are fairly similar but the only ones i can comment on are the virus and the nova/supernova. hte virus one is the best ive found but you cant write your own patterns in it.

Posted by Etherium on Feb-07-2003 03:37:

It is only useful if the lfo clock that is controlling the arp is set to a very slow speed, like a 2:1 ratio. I was basically just trying to revive this thread. I agree, the virus has a very nice arp, but you can't make your own patterns.

Posted by DeZmA on Feb-22-2003 21:15:

my micro q has a nice arp. Does everything, even acid-style slides + it's cheap ass for what it offers. 3 osc va synth with fm and wavetable synthesis. Mc 505 has some nice arp styles, for the owners, check the arp-edit pages, there are loads of styles hidden in those menu's.

this thread seems to have died....whats going on....nobody want new sounds?

Posted by SgtFoo on Feb-23-2003 21:17:

I felt like making a contribution to this thread once i had some original "from scratch" synths done. They're all from my own trax, so no stealing melodies...unless you're remixing!

This clip is from a track in progress called "Sense of Inversion". (made in FL3.56)
It's 3(three) 3oscs layered, but with slightly different melodies, hitting as many harmonic notes as necessary. Sometime synths are better on the whole if they have certain ranges of notes achieved. The appregiator is another great tool for good synths.
I used 2 short enveloped synths and 1 longer string synth enveloped to almost a short synth. I ran the synths through a free filter to let u hear the range it'll do without maxing out the low peaks and then maxing the highs.
There's also a small simple purebass6 preset for the 3osc as a basskik follow-up. it's altered much like any normal trancey synth, plus a parametric eq set to kill the high freqs.

When u make synths try to be picky and eliminate the highs or lows that aren't necesary in the sound you're aiming for. The 7 band eq is best for altering the sound. the parametric eq is best for optimizing it... synth or precussion.

All synths i'm sure you all know use a standard set of FX...
reverb, flange, eq(1 or 2 or any), delay, and optional filter.
compression is best used to master the entire track to a standard non-max-out track... in other words...it sounds good on any system after rendering.

check the production forum for mastering threads....there's a few and I've posted lotsa those tips.

As for the fat synths... keep em coming. and yes i agree with the idea about the best DJs/producers using hardware presets tweaked, but tweaked alot.

@sgtfoo: very nice clip indeed, but it is a little bit distorted...

all the people who want new sounds have joined the production ftp so far I think, I got some nice sounds dloaded from there.

I'm currently working on this synth:

http://www.powerdance.nl/~qticion/solstice%20remake.mp3

I used the melody from System F - Solstice to test it

[EDIT]

Here's the same synth used with the melody from Ullrich Fassbinder - 20000 Miles:

thnx in advance

Posted by Passiva on Mar-15-2003 20:29:

Sure, here it is:
