Why would anybody need a 3D alongside with a monome, lemur, efx and a djm800?

the xone 3D i have here makes a fuckin 60Hz shit ground hum for some reason... and i asked for a new one for a gig in prague, which surprisingly enough made the same line noise... so now im just rethinking the setup. but yeah... a xone 3d is simply just a DAC with midi + mixer... which is really the same thing with Monome+Lemur+DJM800+FX1000 ... most importantly, all i need (outiside of the other gear) is a DJ mixer with four lines. so ive been using "whatever works" these days... not so much the 3d... which still... is a pain in the shit to ship with me or have the club rent.

Thats a very complicated setup; The more units you use with ableton means more things could go wrong, but since its your full time job you have enough time to play around with your setup to make sure it woks for you. Im more comfortable with Korg Zero 8 and a Monome 64, and you get the KAOSS pad and a very usable midi controller built into the mixer.

Posted by LKD on Feb-26-2008 21:43:

i like to use a mixer and this:

Posted by deadmau5 on Feb-26-2008 21:44:

that kaos pad confuses me to all hell.

If you truly believe that the deck and its media are not used as instruments to create music in a dj set......then you are truly ignorant...

And I challenge you to find me a DJ who does not agree...

I guess grammar wasn't your strong subject in school.

And I can pretty much guarantee that I have been in and around the industry alot longer than you...

Yes I do have several DJ friends who can beat match. Unfortunately I can't do it to save my life....

Maybe I should get a mac book and some ableton...Then I can play parties too...

ok, my late review:

i got there just as deadmau5 was starting. i enjoyed most of his set, especially the start and end - the 8th note prog in the middle didn't do it for me so much. it was mostly his own stuff but had various other tracks thrown in - from a couple shlomi aber songs to familiar recent electro.. the vibe was amazing, i hadn't seen people that excited to see a non-trance DJ at the guv before. joel, wtf was up with the baby arm you held up in the air for awhile? haha... I almost got a picture of it :S

james zabiela.. i knew to expect some crazy action as he used his toys, but i was sceptical of him playing breaks in the main room. i soon found i was wrong as he fuckin rocked the guv with the house/breaks fusion.. i found myself moving nonstop. my only beef was the ghey snow patrol remix at one point. i wish i had a more than basic understanding about djing so i could have fully appreciated the view from behind the decks.

i popped into the acid lounge towards the end of the night... i expected it to be nothing special and assumed it would be too small and quiet to have a good time in. but.. i was wrong, carlo lio's trippy techy house was thumping enough to get the whole room going.. i found most of the old gallery crowd in there, and the vibe was just as good aside from the extra amount of sketch asians.

i only stopped in the gallery once, needless to say i think the guv management fucked up big time by switching the lineup to the 'dance rock' djs so abruptly.. it was completely empty in the middle of the night, even though they were playing electro when i stopped in.. probably because such a big deal was made about the transition away from the usual djs... if they rotated these new guys in gradually they could have got a feel for how people liked different styles of music.

it was also my first time getting bottle service at the guv, it was worth every penny to avoid the crowdedness and get tipsy without waiting at the bar - i definitely recommend it and will do it again soon. overall this was probably the best party i've been to since guv 11 year, the past several trance events just haven't been as hype.

You really don't know how to communicate with people do you? I was actually trying to answer you in a neutral manner, and you call me ignorant.

Of course a turntable or CDJ can be used to make music, but their primary use is to play pre-recorded music. That is why they are called record players and CD players, not CD instruments. If you put on a CD or vinyl, and just hit play, it will play the song that is on the medium. You have to actively manipulate the player to make music, in conjunction with another piece of equipment, usually a mixer.

With a dedicated instrument, it does nothing else but create sounds, which when created on beat, makes music.

Given the U2 example, you were off in comparing them and DJs. U2 cannot just hit play on their instruments and walk away, and that's why they will never use macs as the main container for their music.

Stop calling people ignorant, or saying that you have more experience than others. That is not how intelligent, thoughtful people converse. If you want to debate the merits of an argument, do so, but stop attacking people when you have no historical background on them. If you still do not understand, Google the word 'fallacy'.

It may be the same machine but when used in a performance aspect, it ceases to be a simple player...

Have you read the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life???

Maybe some of you should read that...

Zabiela WAS OFF THE HOOK, first night ever with out my good friend, which we will leave E nonomous . Place was packed, and jamies lite that muth f**ker up, drank up a storm at lot 332, then came to guv around 4, some how jamies still had my legs a movin. you gotta love a DJ that thanks the crowd, Twice once in a song one with a piece of paper, you fucks complain too much, why don't you just call this complain addict, live life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have fun
WOW WHAT WAS THAT LAST TRACK HE PLAYED!!!!

tune id

First off Zabiela's 2nd last tune is Joris Voorn Vs. Thom Yorke - Erased Blank (James Zabiela Mashup)...great track. He then finished with Bjork - Joga (Introvert breaks mix) from a few years back, but it still sounds class.

So this was only my 2nd time to the Guv and I had a decent night, thought Deadmau5 was good for the first half of his set before it became a bit more trancier and lost it's edge...did not like the Chems remix (what the fuck sample) thing that was played at all, but most other people seemed to enjoy it, so it worked well enough for them.

Thought Zabiela was immense too, i've seen him a few times and this was one of the best i've seen him, but i'm right into that style of music so was pretty much always going to like it. Liked hearing Song of Life moment and Perseverance sounded good out too.

Overall I was happy with the night.

Oh yeah, one last thing, can someone tell me what the fuck the horn is all about?!

Posted by flavor on Feb-27-2008 02:52:

Pretty sure the horn is played when whoever is in the dj booth on the second floor is bored.... the nite that Tommy Lee and Dj Aero were there the horn was played NON STOP at one point it went for liek 35 seconds straight.... and then the NO2 went for a min straight LOL!

NO2 is nitrogen dioxide which is what comes from your cars exhaust...

LN2 is liquid nitrogen which is what the Guv's kryo system shoots...

Only 2 of them are letters, the other is a number. Fail.
