Georgian forces retreat from the northern front to fortified positions in Tbilisi and surrounding towns. A cease fire seems likely when the EU president visits Moscow and Tbilisi. This is a battle of a bear versus a cat. If Georgia made an unprovoked move on South Ossetia, then Georgian leadership made a huge blunder.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't South Ossetia officially part of Georgia? Georgia can move their army however the hell they want inside their borders.

Yes it is a part of Georgia (Or was ) but if knowing that a huge military power like Russia would react if you did send your troops there (even though it's part of your country) why do it in the first place? Whatever the circumstances, it was provocative on the part of the part of the Georgians.

do you see anything wrong with this picture? i do, its a normal fuckng ossetian joes with AK47 in their hands on a motherfucking georgian teritory. lets say ukrainian came in to russia with guns and started shooting up the place, what the fuck would you do, would you say hey whatever let him be he's probably only gonna kill couple of people before he runs out of bullets, no biggie. or would you call police saying some ****** is trying to kill me

i bet non of you ever heard about this,not long like 4-5 months ago, when people, georgian citizens that lived in abkhazia (georgian territory) which is occupied by russians right now, tried to cross the abkhazian border in order for them to vote for mikheil saakashvili during election, they were shot at by russian soldiers who you call "peacekeepers" just because they wanted to vote for georgias good sake. they blew up the bus full of people just like that. ill try to find a source, it was televized by georgian tv

While I think Russia overstepped their bounds, I also see people reacting in the way you are, just as bad. Being a fucking idiot about it, instead of doing other things to quell or eliminate the tension, is just plain right idiocy. Palestine and Chechnya are both places with exactly the same approach. They just think violence is the answer, when it just causes more problems in this day and age. This is not 1550 when we only had canons, single shot muskets, and swords. Violence begets violence, which therefore makes it worse.

Yes, but there was a peacekeeping operation in South Ossetia, which stabilized the region, so that a deal could be worked out. South Ossetia is technically Georgian, but that's not how they operate. I don't think it in Georgia's interest to try to conquer South Ossetia.

first of all "as seen on georgian tv", what do you expect other than propaganda?

i am not defending the russians, who i think took it a bit too far but, wtf were the georgian government thinking?

letting go of the fact that georgia agreed to a ceasefire hours before attacking and destroying an entire city (which by the way is genocide). but ignoring that... they shot down two russian planes, unprovoked i might add. that is an act of aggression.

what boggles my mind is what the hell did they expect to happen? nato to come to their help? georgian president should have really used his head before ordering something like this suicide mission

Depends on who you ask, of course, but South Ossetia's been independent since 1992...

Guys just look at how russia's troops were moving, they were prepared for this. No way they could come up with a plan over night, when they found out that Georgia's troops stepped into s.ossetia

true... but the same argument can be made for military preparedness at the border... all good militaries should be prepared for an assault.

mind you i am not saying anything is clear cut there... with both countries at fault. i just think the georgian president made one horrible decision after another and the people ended up paying for it.
