LOL! well thats because sadly things are getting way worse and out of control and people have the breaking points. Mine is just set a little lower i guess which makes me more extreme? I really hope though that people are fed up enough to vote for change at the very least.

Everybody comes around eventually. It's just a question of when.

Yep. We're all disappointed. So I played my set at a private party last night instead for a different bunch of people. it went down very well.. I wasnt in my cop outfit though.. It felt kinda wrong.

I was waiting for Carlo Lio to drop Project White Rabbit in there. Can you imagine?!!!

I say we all hit zone in our cop / robber outfits tomorrow instead!!!!

so it appears that it was NOT the ORC that pulled the plug, but rather some woman at Bridgepoint.

from an email she sent to someone at torontoist.com"

quote:
According to a spokesperson for Bridgepoint, the plug was pulled when they "FOUND OUT LATE YESTERDAY THAT THE EVENT WAS POSTED ON A RAVE WEBSITE" (the use of all-caps was hers, though probably not meant to indicate yelling).

Earlier, she had told us, in mixed case:

***
There are guidelines regarding the use of the Don Jail and a license is required from ORC for each event. Examples of the types of events that would be appropriate, given the location and neighbouring facilities, would be corporate events, guided tours, filming, photo contests, private dinner parties, etc. These are being undertaken to raise funds for the new hospital, with construction beginning this Fall.

The event that has been canceled for tomorrow evening was advertised as a Rave (on a rave website), for 350 people with full access to the entire jail. This advertising was not accurate or appropriate. Current fire regulations do not allow for 350 people do be in the jail at any time. As well, access to the entire jail is not permitted. Access is the same as it was during Doors Open, which is limited to a few areas of interest.

In the end, the Toronto Jail staff and ORC have to be comfortable with the planned events and the measures being undertaken to ensure security and no disruption to the operating jail. The address given for the event is the address of the Toronto Jail and so 350 people would have been ringing the bell of the operating jail, beginning around 10pm. This alone would cause a disruption to their operations and as such, a license was not granted by ORC.

Assurances were given that there was no public advertising and that this was to be a managed private party. In fact this was not the case, as the event was advertised on a number of public websites. As well, the area is not zoned for this type of use (i.e. raves).

I'm assuming the "Rave" site in question was torontoraves.com. Should be noted as well that event was listed next to a Jimmy Swift Band show @ The Horseshoe tavern, a magazine launch party in Hamilton, a Radiohead concert, some concerts at The Mod Club, Revival,= and an abundance of night club and bar events... none of which are raves. The listing on the site also clearly stated the capacity was 300 people, not 350.

Also none of those involved want anything to do with raves. Though there may be some cross over in terms of music, the same can be said for virtually all top 40 nightclubs these days.

As for the address, i hardly think anyone with half a brain would walk up the current jail looking for the party. It's ridiculous to even think that.

some other points of note:

This was to be a 19+ event serving alcohol. The average age of those in attendance would have been well into their late 20s. A third of the people there probably would have been into their 30's, and mostly working professionals.

We had obtained a special occasion permit from the city in order to serve alcohol legally

The Fire Marshall had inspected the space and approved a capacity of approximately 300 people. 300 was the capacity that we advertised.

We were under the impression that the space had also been sound tested to make sure volume levels outside weren't excessive or offensive.

We purchased a $2 million liability insurance policy

We were hiring 1 bonded and licensed security guard for every 35 or so patrons. It was also offered to hire additional security for outside of the space to ensure people didn't loiter upon entering or leaving the event.

We were planning on shutting down a mere hour after most top 40 nightclubs and bars close.

so not a rave.

would have been nice if this woman hadn't jumped the gun and had at least called us to ask some questions. Someone should let her know that just because it's on the internet, doesn't make it fact. Lets hope she doesn't get her news from theonion.com

Unfortunate that someone is unable to check facts and make logical decisions.

Posted by *~LiSa-LoO~* on Jun-06-2009 23:56:

That's really too bad that a stupid woman ruined the fun for everyone.

Posted by FunkyCrew on Jun-07-2009 00:29:

wow
ignorance at its best

all in all - is there any hope?

This woman should be fired. Anyone who exercises such hasty and poor judgment has no business being in the health profession. It really doesn't matter what her position is.

The worst is how she says "a license was not granted". Actually, a permit WAS given. Giving a permit and then refusing to honour it a day before the event is not the same as never giving the permit in the first place.

In my opinion, Bridgepoint should be on the hook for every dollar spent on putting this together that can now no longer be repaid by the event proceeds, and if they're not willing to do that, they should be taken to court over it.

How about she pay all the expenses that it cost to get that place in order for the event? And pay $5 towards each person's refund.

Posted by DiskoBiskit on Jun-07-2009 01:49:

How about she pay each and every one of us back for our costume costs, time we spent getting to and from ticket locations, and most importantly, the time and effort put in by Jelo, Evan G and the whole Activate Crew... This party was about FUN for a group of people who rarely cause problems.

I think I'll arrest her and cuff her with my fake handcuffs and leave her at the Don overnight.. hee hee.
