But those are learned behaviours to begin with. I'm talking about the elements of our personalities that are innate - and I do believe there is a side to all of us that is unlearned.

I would definitely agree that one can "change" in the sense that they can unlearn undesirable behaviours (which is exactly what I said in the first place). But again, I don't think that changes their elementary personality.

If you think people don't change, then surely you can think of a(n impossible) way people can change, right?

No, I don't think people change, lol. They modify their behaviours, but they don't inherently change.

... which is? Just give me one elementary/innate trait, so to speak, I want to understand what you're trying to get at.

That's just a change of behaviour though... has the real person actually changed?

If our behaviour is a part of us, and it changed, have we not changed along with it?

Posted by Silky Johnson on Aug-20-2009 18:23:

So you think that all we are as people is a sum of learned behaviours? That's pretty boring.

Posted by lenazi on Aug-20-2009 18:23:

it is possible for behaviour to be an act of necessity. (ie work, responsibilities and such). At the core i think it is possible to act different but still not have changed a bit.

ps this thread sucks now stop it.

That and genetics have far more evidence than you hippy astrology 'inner self' crap.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Aug-20-2009 18:27:

And what does genetics do but predetermine who we are and how we'll act?

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Aug-20-2009 18:28:

...

Posted by lenazi on Aug-20-2009 18:29:

mental illness, addictive traits are said to be influenced by gentics, so although i don't subscribe to hal's theory it isn't completely wrong.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Aug-20-2009 18:30:

I didn't say it was wrong.

Point is, modern psychology largely considers people to be a composite of both their inherited behaviours as well as their learned ones. I don't think there's anything else to it.

Posted by Slylee on Aug-20-2009 18:32:

actually..jenny. back in the day my dad was a raging pothead/lunatic and would punch holes in the wall and stuff and if you ever met my dad now, you would be like no fucking way. he is the most straight laced, successful, clean-cut ex military type. completely refined and intelligent, funny, etc.... thankfully i never saw that side of him i only know about it because my mom told me and that's why they divorced when i was 2. apparently he went to counselling for a couple of years and went to college after the army and got a great career and traveled, etc...

he's a completely different guy now.

I get that. I don't know why you think I'm arguing otherwise.

That argument relies on one accepting that behaviour is PART of us as opposed to an outward display intended to illicit a desired response from other people. I believe the latter to be true, which is why our behaviour is so often different depending on the company we are keeping at any given moment.
